Cloud Painting
Art - Grades (elementary school)
Teachers: This activity will teach students about clouds and encourage abstract thinking through painting. This lesson uses higher thinking skills and encourages self expression. Objective: Students will manipulate information about clouds making it more personal than textual, and their chances of retaining the information increases dramatically. Students will learn about clouds, cloud formation, and recognition, and be creative with the information. Materials:
  • images of clouds, labelled as to the types paper paint, crayons, colored pencils, or markers water brushes paper towels newspaper or table cloths paint shirts and smocks
Background:
  • Discuss with the students the following information about clouds. How clouds are formed:
Clouds are masses of water droplets or ice crystals that are suspended in air. When the droplets or crystals become too heavy to remain suspended, they fall to the earth in the form of precipitation.
In order for clouds to form, three things are needed. First, the relative humidity must be close to 100 percent. Second, tiny bits of particles, such as dust, must be present. Water collects or condenses around these particles. Third, something must happen to cool the air. If all three conditions exist, clouds will form.
The type of clouds that form depend on how cold the air is and how much water is in the air.
