This includes map data, miscellaneous images, atmospheric and oceanographic research data, and software for use with meteorological data. Primary data centers are listed first, followed by sites which may have some data of that type but are not necessarily official data centers. Much of the research data is not free and is not directly available over the network; only metadata, or information about the data, is available, and you must place an order for the actual data. http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov

Welcome to the NRL-SSC Web. This is an official U.S. Navy web site. NRL is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for nearly 80 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world. NRL-SSC is a tenant at NASA's Stennis Space Center , located in the southwest corner of Mississippi about 50 miles northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, and 30 miles from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. NRL-SSC occupies over 200,000 square feet of research, computation, laboratory, administrative, warehouse, and other facilities at SSC. Facilities include a number of large antennas to receive available oceanographic and meteorological satellite data, a Map Data Formatting Facility, a water-wave channel, and numerous laboratories for acoustic and oceanographic computation, instrumentation, analysis, and testing. Other Navy tenants include the , and the Naval Oceanographic Office , who are major operational users of the oceanographic and atmospheric research and development performed by NRL. This unique concentration of operational and research oceanographers makes SSC the center of naval oceanography and the largest such grouping in the world.

    LABORATORY and RESEARCH FACILITIES
The Engineering Physics Department operates laboratories to support graduate instruction and research. The instructional laboratories complement courses of study in Engineering Physics, Optical Observables, Nuclear Radiation Detection and Instrumentation, Nuclear and Environmental Engineering, Meteorology, Optics, Lasers and Optical Diagnostics. Equipment is continually updated to remain abreast of the state-of-the-art in engineering physics, optical engineering, meteorology, and nuclear engineering. Research laboratories support faculty and student research at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels in laser spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, solid state physics, Mossbauer spectrometry, nuclear radiation detection, nuclear effects and environmental engineering. The Air Force Institute of Technology recently added a new, 29,914 gross square foot, $8.1M, engineering research laboratory (Bldg 644) to the main campus. The single story building overlooks AFIT Park and is connected to the southeast corner of the Graduate School of Engineering and Management (Bldg 640). The facility is dedicated to experimental research in aeronautical engineering, applied physics, electrical engineering and environmental science and houses four research suites:
  • Aerospace Research Facilities Applied Physics Laboratories Environmental Science Suite Microelectronics Clean Room
  • The building features a clean room suite, enabling the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), and micro- and opto-electronic devices and integrated systems. The clean room also supports basic research on advanced electronic and photonic materials. A set of nine laboratories designed for laser physics research will support the development of novel laser devices and research in nonlinear optics, spectroscopy, photonics, solid state physics, semiconductor materials and chemical physics. The aerodynamics labs provide space for low speed wind tunnels, satellite technology experiments, and vibrational dynamics studies. Finally, a suite of three environmental science labs will provide for research in remediation technologies, environmental sampling, remote sensing and microbiology.

Weather balloons are used daily to carry meteorological instruments to 20 miles (30 kilometers) and above into the atmosphere to measure temperature, pressure, humidity, and winds. The balloons are made of rubber and weigh up to 2.2 pounds (one kilogram). More than 200,000 weather soundings are made with such balloons worldwide each year.
Preparing to launch America''s first "ballon-sonde. " Since this first launch on September 15, 1904, in St. Louis, Missouri, literally millions of weather balloons have been launched by the National Weather Service and its predecessor organization. From: The Principles of Aerography, by Alexander McAdle, 1917.
Ballooning and Meteorology in the Twentieth Century
Balloons are ideal for gathering meteorological information and have been used for that purpose throughout their history. Meteorological measurements of wind and air pressure have gone hand in hand with the earliest balloon launches and continue today. Balloons can climb through the denser air close to the Earth to the thinner air in the upper atmosphere and collect data about wind, the different layers of the atmosphere, and weather conditions as they travel.

The Department of Oceanography shares the fifteen-story David G. Eller building with meteorology and geography , giving our students easy access to colleagues and other students working on climate-related problems, air-sea interaction, and geographic-information systems.
The oceanography department operates the R/V Gyre , a 182-foot oceanographic research vessel outfitted for deep-sea studies. The ship carries a crew of 10 and a scientific party of 23 and has a cruising range of 8,000 miles. Docks and staging areas for the Gyre
A newly installed mass spectrometer offers students and faculty the opportunity to work with a state-of-the-art analytical instrument available in only a few places in the U.S.
All our students are expected to have or develop fluency with modern computer equipment, and the department maintains a networked computing center that emphasizes workstations and Macintoshes used for teaching, data analysis, numerical modeling and graphics.

    Our commitment to excellence
We have long-standing and respected traditions in open-ocean and coastal research. In response to society's ever-growing need for healthy and productive coastal zones we are now consolidating and expanding our resources for coastal and shelf oceanography. Major research foci include plankton community structure and composition, microbial ecology, the benthos, marine pollution, seafloor surveying, ecosystem modeling, global and shelf circulation, and climate change.
    Research Facilities
The Galveston campus is particularly suited for the study of coastal ocean systems, and faculty there typically specialize in coastal oceanography. In College Station, faculty research encompasses coastal and open-ocean systems. Students and faculty alike visit both campuses as needed for course work, research, and collaboration with colleagues. Graduate students who intend to conduct research in Galveston first spend at least one year in College Station to complete required courses.
