METEOROLOGY (M.S.)
18-MONTH CURRICULUM
Space Weather
This program provides each student with a broad foundation in meteorology at the graduate level with emphasis in atmospheric dynamics, analysis and forecasting, physical meteorology, or general meteorology. Laboratory practice is used extensively in the analysis and forecasting classes, and computational methods are emphasized in some of the dynamics and physical meteorology courses. This unique combination of coursework and laboratory practice provides the student with the background for understanding atmospheric factors which, when applied appropriately, can enhance our warfighters’ capability to operate under various weather conditions as well as support the acquisition community to ensure weather effects are accounted for in the design of new weapons systems. Admission Requirements: In general, students entering this program will have an undergraduate degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics, or engineering. The basic requirements for admission are an overall undergraduate grade point average, GPA, of at least a B (3.00), a GPA on all mathematics courses of at least a B (3.00), and GRE scores of at least 500 on the verbal test and 600 on the quantitative test. Waivers of some of these requirements can be granted on an individual basis by the Department of Engineering Physics. General Requirements: The Master of Science with emphasis in meteorology will be awarded for the successful completion of a curriculum, which serves the needs of the Air Force and has the approval of the faculty as meriting the degree. Specific requirements include:

Meteorology
The observation of martian weather by several surface stations would expand to a much more comprehensive basis the existing very limited information on surface climate and circulation (based primarily on the two Viking The broad objectives of martian lower atmosphere studies are thus the following:
Phenomenological description of the present general circulation.
Quantitative description of the response of the general circulation to forcing factors such as topography, albedo, thermal inertia, atmospheric dust load and the time and space distributions of heating and cooling.
Quantitative description of the diurnal, annual and interannual cycles of the distribution and transport of volatiles, particularly H O, and dust.
Quantitative description of the vertical fluxes of momentum, sensible heat, and water vapour in the surface boundary layer.
Provision of a basis for comparative planetology of meteorology and climate.
A practical consequence of achieving these objectives would be to provide a much improved basis for predicting the atmospheric state for future Mars missions.

Finnish Meteorological Institute welcomes you to the ELDW 2004 information page.
ELDW 2004 will be held in Helsinki, Finland, June 10, 2004.
The workshop will focus on European lightning location systems, mainly from the point of view of system owners and operators. Scientific scope is limited because of the duration of only one day. It is not possible to include non-European presentations, except for a special guest presentation from Brazil by Dr. Pinto. However, non-European participants are allowed to attend as far as there is space, because of the occasion of ILDC which brings interested people from all over the world.
A registration fee of 50 euros (cash only) should be paid at the registration desk (June 10). Change of schedule and program: due to some coincidences, ELDW is planned to end after the coffee at 14:45, and the closed meeting of EUCLID starts at the same place. General information
