18-MONTH CURRICULUM
Space Weather
This program provides each student with a broad foundation in meteorology at the graduate level with emphasis in atmospheric dynamics, analysis and forecasting, physical meteorology, or general meteorology. Laboratory practice is used extensively in the analysis and forecasting classes, and computational methods are emphasized in some of the dynamics and physical meteorology courses. This unique combination of coursework and laboratory practice provides the student with the background for understanding atmospheric factors which, when applied appropriately, can enhance our warfighters’ capability to operate under various weather conditions as well as support the acquisition community to ensure weather effects are accounted for in the design of new weapons systems. Admission Requirements: In general, students entering this program will have an undergraduate degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics, or engineering. The basic requirements for admission are an overall undergraduate grade point average, GPA, of at least a B (3.00), a GPA on all mathematics courses of at least a B (3.00), and GRE scores of at least 500 on the verbal test and 600 on the quantitative test. Waivers of some of these requirements can be granted on an individual basis by the Department of Engineering Physics. General Requirements: The Master of Science with emphasis in meteorology will be awarded for the successful completion of a curriculum, which serves the needs of the Air Force and has the approval of the faculty as meriting the degree. This information defines the course of study leading to a B.S. in Meteorology at SUNY College at Brockport and should be used in conjunction with the SUNY Brockport Undergraduate Studies catalog, Your Right To Know, and the Academic Policies Handbook. This information applies to students matriculating Spring 2002 or later. (If you matriculated earlier, contact the Department of the Earth Sciences for the earlier handbook.)
INTRODUCTION
The Meteorology major is structured as a professional preparation track to employment with the National Weather Service, governmental agencies, the military services, private meteorological and engineering firms, and as prerequisite to graduate study in the atmospheric and related sciences. The strong physical science orientation of the program prepares students to enter numerous related fields, including environmental and computer science, hydrology, and wind and solar energy utilization. Designed to provide a sound basis for the student with strong aptitude and interest in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in application to the atmospheric environment, this plan of study may be oriented toward a special interest area by the judicious choice of electives.
Recent graduates have gone on to attend nationally renowned graduate schools, to operate their own weather and environmental forecasting and consulting companies; and to work for state and county agencies, public utilities, U.S. Government laboratories, commercial airlines, the military services, and private industry.

Weather-Satellite Images
This exercise is designed for use in introductory meteorology courses for non-science majors. It is optimized for viewing with , version 3.0 or later. The exercise comprises three parts:
Part I: Introduction
Summarizes some basic information about satellite images that students must know before attempting this exercise. However, this information is not enough; the references cited below (for example) provide additional necessary background.
Part II: Background Questions
Asks students a series of questions to test their grasp of basic concepts needed to interpret visible and infrared satellite images. Answers to these questions are provided.
Part III: Image Interpretation Exercise
Asks students to apply their knowledge to interpret what they see in a variety of satellite images, including a series recorded one day in February on the West Coast of the U.S.
To begin the lab exercise immediately, click on the "START" button. For further information, read on. In this exercise, students apply basic concepts about solar and terrestrial radiation, plus common-sense knowledge about basic physical properties of clouds and of land and ocean surfaces, to interpret visible and infrared satellite images. It assumes that students have already been introduced generally to weather satellites and weather satellite images, and in more detail to basic concepts about solar and terrestrial radiation and the basic laws of radiation. Almost any typical introductory, college-level textbook on meteorology could provide the necessary background. Some examples with which I'm familiar include:

Climate and Global Change Introduction to the earth's climate, climate change, and the interactions between climate and the global environment. MRR210 REFRESHER, INTRODUCTION TO METEOROLOGY/LAB (NO CREDIT) (Meets last six weeks of quarter.) ( 4 - 2 ).
An introductory course that treats the composition and structure of the atmosphere, thermodynamic processes, forces and related small- and large-scale motions, air masses fronts, tropical cyclones, solar and terrestrial radiation, general circulation and weather forecasting. Additionally, laboratory periods are included to illustrate lecture material, including surface and airways communication codes, pressure and streamline/ isotach analyses, introduction to mid-latitude and tropical analyses by the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) over oceanic regions, plus satellite interpretation.   • The Foundation Programme is designed for those people who are new to forecasting. At the end of the foundation programme, the student is capable of operating in any forecasting environment without the support of more experienced staff. This programme provides a complete set of fundamental forecasting competencies that all forecasters require. The Professional Development Programme is designed for those who are able to work in the forecasting environment independently of others, but who need to develop some of the core forecasting competencies further. The Specialist Forecaster Programme is designed for those who have a need for forecasting skills that are not required of all forecasters generally.
