Since the 1960s, however, more and more work of an archaeological and epigraphic nature has been concentrated on the countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, the U.A.E, and Yemen, and Arabian archaeology has emerged as an important sub-discipline of Near Eastern archaeology.This series is devoted to the publication of primary research in the countries of the Arabian peninsula, and aims to publish studies which extend in time from prehistory to the Islamic era. The Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East (CULTURAL ATLAS OF) > Customer Review #1: Awesome!!

This book does an excellent job of describing the culture and civilization that was the ancient near east. The pictures and maps are totally sweet, and provide a lot of the appeal in this book. In addition Roafs text is an enjoybale read, that is accessible even to the non-expert. Im fascinated with ancient history and I really enjoyed this book. So if you are in to the ancient near east or just into ancient civilizations in general give this book a try, its some sweet action you just cant pass up.
The Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East (CULTURAL ATLAS OF) > Customer Review #2: Best cultural atlas of Mesopotamia Although Im a biologist by education, Im something of a history buff and Ive purchased 6 or 7 big atlases of world history and cultural atlases of the world lately (you cant have too many atlases in your life), and this one is the best atlas on Mesopotomia that Ive seen. Its well-written and has lots of interesting information, but its major strength is all the beautiful color photos of art, artifacts, buildings, and other cultural items from the many ancient sites, along with a number of maps. The author does a fine job of discussing the importance of many of the major archeological sites and their history. Youll hear a lot about these in the book, some of which, although Ive read a fair amount of archeology and ancient history, I still wasnt that familiar with, so the author knows his stuff. All in all a beautifully illustrated, well-written, educational, and even reasonably priced book given the overall quality and features.

Archaeology and Ancient Human History
"It seems no work of Man's creative hand,
By labor wrought as wavering fancy planned;
But from the rock as by magic grown,
Eternal, silent, beautiful, alone! . . . Match me such marvel, save in Eastern clime
A rose-red city, half as old as time."
from "Petra," by Dean Bergen The "rose-red city" of Petra in the Arabian desert is just one of thousands of sites all over the world that record human history in all its facets, both humble and glorious. Archaeology is the study of these sites, of prehistoric and early-historic human cultures and societies. Archaeology ranges over the whole of human history, from the first development of writing over five thousand years ago up to today. My archaeology and ancient-history books can be roughly divided according to the region they discuss:
Ancient history in general
These are general books about archaeology, such as textbooks, "how-to" books, and books that discuss archaeological sites from all over the world. THE ADVENTURE OF ARCHAEOLOGY*

Explore the fall of civilizations in ancient Maya, mesopotamia, Anasazi, and the medieval African empires of Mali and Songhai. Learn about the archeological concepts of interpreting evidence and dating artifacts. Search for clues to what happened at the Maya center of Copan.
http://www.learner.org/exhibits/collapse/
H Why did this great civilization fall? The history of humankind has been marked by patterns of growth and decline. Some declines have been gradual, occurring over centuries. Others have been rapid, occurring over the course of a few years. War, drought, natural disaster, disease, overpopulation, economic disruption: any of these can bring about the collapse of a civilization. Internal causes (such as political struggles or overfarming) can combine with external causes (such as war or natural disaster) to bring about a collapse. What does this mean for modern civilizations? What can we learn from the past? Join us as we explore the collapse of four ancient civilizations. You'll learn what happens when a society collapses and how archaeologists find and interpret evidence. You can visit the Maya city of Copán and search for clues to its collapse. You can also try your hand at "garbage-ology" and study what trash can tell us about a society. Ready to get started?

Some of the material included here ( Ancient Mesopotamia ) was originally published as the Resource Guide included with one of the three volumes ( Life in Ancient Egypt, Life in Ancient Nubia, Life in Ancient Mesopotamia ) of the Guides for Teachers Based on the Collections and Resources of the Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago (Chicago, 1996), produced by the Museum Education Program with the generous support of a grant from the Polk Bros. We have made some additions and corrections, and slightly altered the structure of that Resources Guide for the purposes of providing this information on-line, and we expect to add additional material as needed. The Egyptian and Nubian lists have been developed by Emily Teeter in the course of many years of teaching and lecturing and will change as new material is published. In addition, we are planning to add more lists as we identify topics of interest to the public. We welcome your suggestions. This on-line version was coordinated and processed into HTML by Charles E. But the heavens are mute, and can only reflect our own mortal desires and aspirations. Milky Way and Andromeda Programme 1 Ever since our earliest moments on Earth, we’ve sought meaning in the stars. The Mesopotamians - in what is now Iraq - developed a system of predictive astronomy, where Priests scanned the skies for omens that might give clues to the King’s future. The ancient Egyptians believed that when they died, they became stars. So the sky became a region where Egyptian beliefs about royalty, divinity, birth and death all came together. With the help of archaeoastronomers, historians and archaeologists, Rajesh pieces together the astronomical systems operating in the Middle East six thousand years ago. For many of us today, light pollution has created a literal barrier between us and the stars. But that shouldn’t blind us to the extraordinary astronomical achievements of ancient civilisations who had Stars in their Eyes.
