MESOPOTAMIA
The word 'Mesopotamia' is in origin a Greek name (mesos `middle' and 'potamos' - 'river' so `land between the rivers'). Mesopotamia is the oldest known civilization. It is said that Mesopotamia was the place of the legendary 'Garden of Eden'. Mesopotamia is the name is used for the area watered by the Euphrates and Tigris and its tributaries, roughly comprising modern Irak and part of Syria. South of modern Bagdad, the alluvial plains of the rivers was called the land of Sumer and Akkad in the third millennium. The name does not refer to any particular civilization using that name. Over the course of several millennia, many civilizations developed, collapsed, and were replaced in this fertile region. The history of the land and its people dates back more than to 7,000 BC. Mesopotamia has no natural boundaries and is difficult to defend. The influence of neighboring countries is large. Throughout the history of Mesopotamia trade contacts, slow diffusion of foreign tribes and military confrontations have been of great influence. Mesopotamia - the cradle of civilization - the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers, it is said, hosted the legendary Garden of Eden - if it existed anywhere. To emphasize this the ancient village of Al-Qurna singled out a tree ("Adam's tree") with a sign - in Arabic and English. On this holy spot where the Tigris meets the Euphrates this holy tree of our father Adam grew symbolizing the Garden of Eden. Abraham prayed here 2,000 years B.C.

Mesopotamia
By Dr Dominique Collon With Iraq currently in the world's spotlight, trace its beginnings in Mesopotamia - its name in ancient times. Mesopotamia has been called the 'cradle of civilisation' because agriculture, animal herding and domestication developed there earlier than anywhere else, almost 8,000 years ago. By 3,000 BC, the Mesopotamians had already invented the wheel, developed writing, and created the world's first cities and monumental architecture. Mesopotamia
By Dr Dominique Collon From about 2,100 BC, Amorites from the desert began moving into Iraq from the west, and settling around the cities. In about 2,000 BC they contributed to the overthrow of the dominant Third Dynasty of Ur, and established a series of small kingdoms all over Mesopotamia. Under King Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC), the First Dynasty of Babylon gained control of much of Mesopotamia, and Babylon became the capital. Hammurabi's Babylon is inaccessible, lying beneath the ruins of later cities - including that of Nabuchadnezzar II (504-562 BC). At Ur, however, Sir Leonard Woolley found this impressive painted clay figure from the time of Hammurabi. Its horned head-dress identifies it as a god, seated upon a black high-backed throne. Only the upper part survives (height 18cm), but traces of a weapon resting on the figure's left arm may indicate that he is a warrior god. Mesopotamia was approximately 300 miles long and 150 miles wide. It was located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. These rivers flow into the Persian Gulf. The word Mesopotamia means "The land between the rivers". Activity: Find a map and see if you can locate Mesopotamia. 2) WHAT WAS MESOPOTAMIA LIKE?
CLIMATE
The climate for the region ranged from seasons of cool to hot seasons with temperatures often over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Mesopotamia experienced moderate rainfall. ENVIRONMENT
Most of Mesopotamia was located in the present day country of Iraq. The land of Mesopotamia was once dominated by floods, but today is mostly desert. The seasonal flooding was a challenge to the farmers of Mesopotamia. These farmers learned to control the flooding to some degree. The fertile land along the rivers produced such crops as wheat, barley, sesame, flax, and various fruits and vegetables. The land that was once marshes and channels that provided food, protection, and life to the people there, no longer exists.

ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA from ~3000 BC until the time of ABRAHAM (~2000 BC)
We cannot help comparing our present day knowledge with the history of Man that is presented in the Bible. Due to the work of scholars who have deciphered hieroglyphics and cuneiform writing which were engraved on tablets of dried clay, we can verify information about life as it was 50 centuries ago in ancient Mesopotamia . This is an interesting study where we see, as in Egypt's first official dynasties , periods of great spirituality, where people were pious and peaceful; then suddenly these were replaced by periods of great violence, when kings reigned who were adored as powerful gods... We do not intend to study all the kings and the wars between kingdoms and small states, but instead to concentrate on the virtues and moral values of the first known kings of Sumer, in order to compare these values and beliefs with those of other peoples of the Middle East at that time. It is also interesting to study the history of the common people, the politics and the attacks by invaders who lived around the period 2000 BC - the time of

It was occupied from very ancient times, and its remains go back as far as the protoliterate period in Mesopotamia. In the early 3d millennium B.C. , Kish was a Semitic city. Although it was one of the provincial outposts of Sumerian civilization, it had a cultural style of its own. There is an excavated palace of Sargon I of Agade, a native of Kish, and a great temple built by Nebuchadnezzar and Nabonidus in the later Babylonian period. This page is a continuation of his first page, Ancient Economies which dealt with a general overview of the economies of the cultures from the Mesopotamians to the Mycenaean Greeks. This page is much more in depth than the first and takes a very philosophical and scholarly look at economies in myths of these ancient times. The page has numerous references to the Bible and other writing of the time and he analyzes the use of money or the structure of an economy in that piece. The site contains no pictures or links and is well organized text throughout. Silver also gives an extensive bibliography at the end of the page to back up his many listed sources. Ancient Economies is definitely a better place to begin research, but this page will do well for anyone looking to extend that research even further.

    Catherine Morland, in Northhangar Abbey
by Jane Austen How are historians to remedy the silence about women in many traditional accounts of history? This question has received a number of distinct answers. The first solution was to locate the great women of the past, following the lead of much popular historiography that focuses on "great men". The problem here is that just as the "great men" approach to history sidelines and ignores the lives of the mass of people, focusing on great women merely replicates the exclusionary historical approaches of the past. The next solution was to examine and expose the history of oppression of women. This approach had the merit of addressing the life histories of the mass of women, but, since it has proved to be possible to find some degree of oppression everywhere, it tended to make women merely subjects of forces that they could not control. On the other hand, historians' focus on oppression revealed that investigating the
