Mesopotamia - Geography
Mesopotamia is located in the Fertile Crescent, the arc of land that curves from the eastern Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf. Traders, nomadic herders, and invaders all easily overcame the few natural barriers around the Fertile Crescent. As a result, the region became a crossroad where people and ideas met. Each new group that arrived made its own significant contribution to the history of the region. Mesopotamia is defined between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River, partly in present day Iraq. The word Mesopotamia means "between the rivers" in Greeks.
Mesopotamia has also been called the "Cradle of Civilization." That is because a lot of "firsts" happened in Mesopotamia, an upside-down Fertile Crescent looks like a cradle, and the Tigris and Euphrates River look as if they're "cradling" Mesopotamia.

"The Parthian Empire is a fascinating period of Persian history closely connected to Greece and Rome. Ruling from 247 B.C. to A.D. 228 in ancient Persia (Iran), the Parthians defeated Alexander the Great's successors, the Seleucids, conquered most of the Middle East and southwest Asia, and built Parthia into an Eastern superpower. The Parthian empire revived the greatness of the Achaemenid empire and counterbalanced Rome's hegemony in the West. Parthia at one time occupied areas now in Iran, Iraq,Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel." The Parthians

Excerpted from Iraq4ever. A Roman description of the Parthians or later Persians from Justin's History of the World
"In the wake of Alexander of Macedonia's conquest of Persia in the late 4th century B. C., the Achaemenid dynasty ended. However within a hundred years a new group, the Parthians, were able to re-establish an Iranian empire which rivaled Rome in the Near East. Below is a Roman description of the Parthians, which indicates that the Parthians, like the Shang and Chou in China, were a nomadic people who established an imperial dynasty." This lesson is in response to a communication from a Napa, California teacher who says that her textbook is "woefully remiss in including roles, contributions and lives of women" in Mesopotamia. Can this statement be made about your textbook too? In general, women's rights in Mesopotamia were not equal to those of men. But in early periods women were free to go out to the marketplaces, buy and sell, attend to legal matters for their absent men, own their own property, borrow and lend, and engage in business for themselves. High status women, such as priestesses and members of royal families, might learn to read and write and be given considerable administrative authority. Numerous powerful goddesses were worshiped; in some city states they were the primary deities. Women's position varied between city-states and changed over time. There was an enormous gap between the rights of high and low status women (almost half the population in the late Babylonian period were slaves), and female power and freedom sharply diminished during the Assyrian era. The first evidence of laws requiring the public veiling of elite women come from this period. Read the following excerpts gleaned from Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and artifacts. Then find the sentence, phrase or idea that shows:

Introduction
The Mesopotamian plain was part of the Fertile Crescent. Situated between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the area was the birth place of the varied civilizations that developed writing, schools, libraries, written law codes and moved us from prehistory to history. The Sumerians, Akkadians, Chaldeans, Hittites, Babylonians, Israelites, Phoenicians, Lydians, Assyrians and Persians established the foundations for future Civilizations. Their contributions include: the wheel, glass, the sail, coinage, mathematics, the alphabet, calendars, bronze, iron, monotheism, epic poetry, farming and irrigation. The art of Mesopotamia is as diverse as the civilizations that inhabited the area. Art became decorative, stylized and conventionalized at different times and places in the area. Gods took on human forms and humans were combined with animals to make fantastic creatures. Art commemorated the accomplishments of great men and intimidated the lowly. Skills improved and new media was developed. Large temples and imposing palaces dotted the landscape. Man recorded his history and poetry for the first time and set them down to music. Lyres, pipes, harps and drums accompanied their songs and dances.

The Ancient History of Mesopotamia (Iraq) Some time in the early fourth millennium B.C. in Mesopotamia, a critical event-the settlement of the great river valleys-took place. It was after this that writing , art, monumental architecture, and new political forms were introduced in Mesopotamia. SUMER: At the dawn of recorded history, the lower Mesopotamian valley was occupied by the Summerians. They were an agricultural people who learned to control floods and built strong-walled towns, such as Uruk, the biblical Erech and the modern Warka, and Lagash, the modern Al-Hiba. Summerian influence, especially through language, extended widely from its base in southern Mesopotami, Eastward to Susa Iran, Northward to Assur, and Westward to Syria. Scenes of War, panel from the Standard of Ur, 2700 B.C. (British Museum, London) Ziggurat at Ur, 2100 B.C. (IRAQ) AKKAD: At about 2300 B.C. Sumer came under the domination of a great ruler, Sargon of Akkad. The Akkadian although Semitic in origin and speaking a language entirely different from that of Sumer, had assimilated Sumerian culture. Victory Stele on Naram-Sin, 2300-2200 B.C. (Louvre, Pris)

INTRODUCTION TO ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA st May 2000 Emergence Excavation, Discovery and Decipherment Reconstructing History Table of Mesopotamian Chronology Emergence Lying within the western regions of modern-day Iraq, Mesopotamia - literally 'The Land between the Rivers' - is the name given since ancient times to the great alluvial plain built up by the silt deposits of the Euphrates in the west and the Tigris in the east. It extends from north of Baghdad down to the mouth of the Persian Gulf, and is bordered in the north and east by the vast mountain ranges stretching down from Kurdistan to the Zagros in Iran, in the west by the Syrian desert. The land is rich and fertile, ensuring high yields for farmers especially in ancient times. Indeed it has been identified with the biblical 'Garden of Eden', especially since the Euphrates is one of the rivers quoted in Genesis 2:14 as flowing out of it. However this is to over-simplify the matter. The annual flood levels are entirely dependent on the degree of inundation coming down from the surrounding mountain ranges, and this is highly variable - unlike, for example, the Nile plains in northern Egypt. The resulting alternation between drought and devastating flood made the area at worst highly vulnerable to famine, and at best an unpredictable place to live. Small wonder, say the traditionalists, that the early settlers revered their gods and prayed so much for favourable conditions. This unpredictability was coupled with the inhospitable terrain surrounding the plains, which harboured many well-protected potential enemies and ensured escape was difficult. Furthermore the land was lacking in fundamental resources for building work; stone, timber and metal were in short supply unless brought in from surrounding areas some distance away. It was not therefore the paradise for the earliest civilisations on earth to develop and flourish which some commentators would have us believe.

The History of Plumbing - Babylonia
T o the ancient traveler on foot or camel back, the massive walled city of Babylon and its network of canals and verdant crop lands must have loomed like a mirage in the simmering heat of the Near East sun. Adding to a disbelieving eye was a 300-ft. high ziggurat or temple tower in the city's center, surrounded on all sides by lush gardens and date palm trees that swayed upon the terraced city. Located some 50 miles south of Baghdad in what is now Iraq, the flat land today is broken only by a series of desolate mounds and occasional patches of green cultivation and small villages. But beneath these mounds or "tells" are shattered remnants of past civilizations, crumbled foundations of clay cities literally layered one on top of the other.
What developed in this area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers from about 6000-3000 B.C. were the beginnings of western civilization. Here the warrior peoples of Assyria reigned with a fearsome hand over Sumerian and Babylonian culture. In their wake were produced systems of writing and communication, literature, a codified set of laws, a calendar and system for ascertaining time. Wheeled vehicles became common - and water management evolved into irrigation dams, drains and basins, and personal bathrooms of their era's rich and famous. In existence since 2900) B.C., the city of Babylon, under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar (605-562 B.C.), had spread on both sides of the Euphrates River. It covered 500 acres. Many of the houses were three stories high whose flat roofs were buttressed with timbers packed with mud. For the poor who couldn't afford the luxury of wood, there were circular mud-brick huts, supported by a center post, the walls packed with reeds and mud.

dogging the mystery of the strange appearance of Akhenaten, the "rebel pharaoh" who was one of history's first recorded monotheists. Her persuasive theory suggests he suffered from the genetic disease known as Marfan's syndrome, and not only offers insights into his odd physical characteristics and short lifespan, but into the philosophical and cultural revolution that he visited on the Egyptian society of his day.
