Elizabeth Cohen: Meningitis outbreak in Ohio
Cohen Elizabeth Cohen is a medical correspondent for CNN's Health and Medical Unit. She is in Alliance, Ohio , reporting on an outbreak of meningitis in local schools. Q: What is the latest news on the meningitis vaccinations? Cohen: In and around Alliance, Ohio, they are planning on vaccinating nearly 6,000 students, faculty and staff today at six local high schools. They are doing this because since Memorial Day weekend, two students have died and another student has become ill, and so they hope that this will keep anyone else from becoming ill. Q: How common are meningitis outbreaks, and is there any connection with recent outbreaks in the Toronto area? Cohen: There is meningitis at all times throughout the United States and southern Canada. For example, there are 150 cases in Ohio alone every year, so you are going to see sporadic cases while this outbreak is occurring. We have been told by the Centers of Disease Control and the Ohio Department of Health that there are no other cases related to this outbreak, just the three cases we already know about. N.H. reports sixth meningitis case
Story Tools MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP) A 65-year-old woman is New Hampshire's sixth confirmed case of bacterial meningitis, health officials said. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Meningitis New Hampshire or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? State Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen said officials are investigating whom the woman had contact with. She was in good to fair condition at a Manchester hospital, and Stephen said the case was diagnosed early. He declined to give her name or say what town she is from, other than to say she lives in the Manchester area. An 18-year-old woman died from meningitis during the weekend and four other New Hampshire teens were diagnosed with it. Meningitis causes sometimes fatal swelling of the brain and spinal cord. Despite the rash of cases, officials said the state still has not had an unusually high number of meningitis cases this year. Stephen said that so far there is no known link between the woman's case and the others.

Bacterial meningitis in children and adults
Changes in community-acquired disease may affect patient care
Elizabeth J. Phillips, MD, FRCPC Andrew E. Simor, MD, FRCPC VOL 103 / NO 3 / MARCH 1998 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables This is the first of three articles on CNS Infections Preview : Bacterial infection is among the most common of the many causes of meningitis; in the United States, about 6,000 cases of community-acquired bacterial meningitis occur each year. The disease is of special concern because consequences are potentially devastating and because isolates with reduced susceptibility to penicillin are found in increasing and alarming numbers. This article summarizes current knowledge about development, epidemiology, investigation, management, and prevention of bacterial meningitis. M eningitis is inflammation of the meninges, the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, and it is characterized by pleocytosis. In the past few years, significant advances have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of bacterial meningitis and in developing approaches to management. Despite these developments, bacterial meningitis remains an important source of morbidity and mortality. This article focuses on community-acquired infection, as opposed to hospital-acquired or postoperative infection, and on the disease in children and adults. (Meningitis in newborns and immunocompromised patients is not discussed in detail.)

    http://www.vaccins.be/infecties/~nl/meningokokken.htm
Hoe vindt besmetting plaats?

What are the symptoms of viral meningitis?
    How is it diagnosed?

    How is it transmitted?
What are the symptoms of viral meningitis? Your child was recently diagnosed with viral meningitis. This infection causes swelling of the lining of the brain. Your child may have symptoms such as fever, headache, neck pain or stiffness, pain when looking at bright lights, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, tiredness and sleepiness. The virus may also infect other parts of the body and cause symptoms such as skin rash, runny nose, sore throat, ear ache, cough, difficulty breathing and diarrhea. Let your doctor know if your child has any of these symptoms. How is it diagnosed? not effective against viral meningitis. If your child has mild symptoms from viral meningitis, and is doing well at home, the doctor will not admit him or her to hospital. However, if your child is quite sick from the viral infection (especially young infants), the doctor may hospitalize your child temporarily for further care until he or she is better. Occasionally, a doctor is unable to distinguish viral and bacterial meningitis on the basis of the test results. This may be because your child was taking an oral antibiotic before the spinal tap was completed. An antibiotic does not prevent the meningitis from happening but can make the spinal fluid results confusing. Some viral infections can also give spinal fluid results that falsely resemble bacterial meningitis. In that case, your doctor may decide to hospitalize your child and start intravenous antibiotic(s) while waiting for other test results. If the diagnosis of viral meningitis becomes apparent in the next several days, the antibiotic(s) will be stopped. Sometimes this involves repeating the spinal tap in one or two days.

Meningococcal infections can spread fast and lead to life-threatening diseases, especially meningococcal C disease, which has a higher rate of mortality and sequelae than meningococcal disease caused by other serogroups in developed countries. It’s a rare, but frightening disease; and it can be overlooked since in the beginning and in very young children it is often difficult to spot. The symptoms can be initially unspecific and flu like, but invasive disease can result in disability or even more tragic consequences. Rates of meningococcal disease are highest in infants who have not yet developed protective antibodies. Primary prevention of the disease by an effective immunisation for all age groups is the desired approach. Demonstration of immunological memory is a very important feature of the vaccines, as well as persistence of antibodies.
