Officials weigh vaccinations in meningitis scare
People lined up outside Alliance Community Hospital Sunday for preventative antibiotics ALLIANCE, Ohio (CNN) Experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are due to arrive here Monday to determine whether a widespread immunization program is needed in this community after a bacterial infection killed two teenagers and left a third in the hospital. Over the weekend, an estimated 15,000 to 18,000 residents flocked to local hospitals to get preventative antibiotics. "Everybody's panicking," one 16-year-old student told The Associated Press. However, he said he was not concerned because, "All of my friends are already on the medication." In fact, distribution of the antibiotics stopped Monday morning after health officials determined that the exposure period had expired, said Karen Vrabec, a spokeswoman for Alliance Community Hospital. ALSO Third case of dangerous bacterial infection diagnosed in Ohio RESOURCES Learn more about meningitis from the CDC "It is no longer clinically necessary or beneficial to take the antibiotic," Vrabec said.

Meningitis C Vaccination
Meningitis C vaccination is available as the new meningococcal C conjugate vaccine (MenC). The UK regime is for each infant to receive a dose of MenC at 2, 3 and 4 months of age. There has also been a campaign to immunise older children. Any young people who have not had the vaccine should have MenC innocculation prior to starting at college or university.
The Vaccine
The vaccine is made from the sugar coat of the germs (meningococcal bacteria) which can cause a type of meningitis . The sugar (polysaccharide) is "glued" to (conjugated with) a protein, and when injected it can lead to the development of immunity to Meningitis C from 2 months of age. The idea is to fool the body's defence system into thinking it is under attack by Meningitis C, and to produce defence mechanisms (antibodies) which will fight off Meningitis C if it is encountered in the future. The vaccine is given, by injection, into the upper arm, thigh or buttock, and became part of the routine immunisation schedule in UK from Autumn 1999. It is given to infants at 2, 3 and 4 months of age. There was a catching up exercise for the older children. Adults and children over one year of age only need one injection.

Meningitis vaccine shortages possible
Story Tools ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) The country could face shortages of a popular childhood meningitis vaccine next year because of production problems, federal officials said Thursday. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Meningitis Diseases or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? Prevnar, also known as PCV7, is used to protect children against invasive pneumococcal disease, which can lead to meningitis or blood stream infections. A one-week production stoppage last month to improve the process that fills vials with vaccine has caused a ripple effect that may lead to delays in the shipping of Prevnar early next year, said Doug Petkus, spokesman for Collegeville, Pennsylvania-based drug maker Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. "That type of stoppage tends to create bottlenecks in our system," Petkus said. "We are getting the product out there in as equitable and evenly distributed as we can." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends a four-dose shot schedule for all children starting at age 2 months, said it won't change its recommendation while there is still enough vaccine.

Meningitis outbreak in Houston sickens 33, kills two
By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Correspondent HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) There have been 33 confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis in the Houston area since October, Texas health officials said Monday. Both children and adults developed the infection and two youngsters, a boy and a girl, died. Seventeen cases were among people living in the city of Houston. Other cases were detected in suburban areas including Montgomery County, which is north Houston, and Fort Bend County, which is southwest of the city. A 12-year-old girl died in November and a 13-year-old boy died in January. Health officials said that while the number of cases is significant, it's a small fraction of the area's 4 1/2 million people. "Since the area has a few cases in small areas within the city, it's considered an outbreak," said Dr. Peter Dull, medical epidemiologist with the Infectious Diseases branch of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
