Hatha Yoga Retreats in Mexico
Meditation and Hatha Yoga retreats in Mexico with Charles MacInerney are held twice a year at a Yoga Retreat Center in the small fishing village of Yelapa, Mexico, 45 minutes South of Puerto Vallarta by boat. Since 1992 Charles MacInerney has led over 50 meditation and yoga retreats in Mexico, and other locations around the world. His favorite discovery is Los Naranjos Retreat Center in Yelapa, on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. In February of 2000 he took a group of 23 students to this brand new center. He was so impressed that before he left he put up standing deposits for two retreats a year, and has continued to return twice a year to this little corner of paradise.
The November 2003 retreat will be the ninth retreat that Charles has led at Los Naranjos Retreat Center, but his twelfth time to take groups into this amazing valley and the village of Yelapa.

Meditation an Open enquiry
"w The source of all 'this' is all 'this' . Often we look for the spiritual world with closed eyes but maybe the everyday world when seen with clear open eyes is the Spirit. A lot of meditation can become an avoidance of 'what is' a turning inward without the opening outward. We need both active and passive meditation. The ability to ponder and enquire quietly within, uncovering and understanding the ways of our pysche with acceptance. The result of that understanding expressing itself outwardly in relationship within the world. The Universe is a participatory affair.
Each posture in yoga is an opportunity to enquire and to open beyond the boundaries of the normal closed bodily feeling. Opening from the heart of the posture explore with feeling awareness the edges of the posture, enquire are the edges open or closed? Where does the body stop? Are there any closed edges to the body...or is the body an open dynamic constantly in relationship with its surroundings? Breathe in via the skin as though the skin is like a piece of fine silk, drawing the breath in with the bones, breathing out relax the skin and extend beyond the body into openness, let the posture flower. Maybe the whole Universe is Open, no closed edges anywhere. It is only our concepts that create edges around 'objects'. What would the mind be without its content? What would an object be if you didn't define it? Find another way of knowing without using thought.

". . . In serenity, all his sorrows dissolve;
his reason becomes serene, his understanding sure."

There are many ways to meditate. They all seem to lead to the same place, so find one that suits you. The benefits are unique for each person, but both physiological and psychological balance is common. Some of the benefits of meditation will be realized quickly, and others over many months, so don't be discouraged.
Read this important note before you begin.
Keep your spine straight, head balanced on your cervical column. Many people like to pray or do visualization before, after meditating, while still in an altered state. Some teachers of meditation are opposed to this practice while others advocate it. I suggest to do it if it feels right to you. As a preparation for meditation, bring your attention to the physical act of breathing. Breathe naturally and, with each cyle of the breath, bring your attention to a different part of your body, paying attention to the changes there as a result of the breathing: the rising and falling of the chest; the movement of your belly; the sensation of the air entering and leaving the nostrils; can you feel any movement of your kidney area? How about your pelvis- do you feel your pelvis tilt at all when you breathe? What do you do between breaths? Is there a pause? If you don't feel these things it is okay, just consider them, one at a time, and move on. (This can also serve as a short "centering" meditation that can be done while waiting for a stoplight to change, or as a short work or study break.)

Meditation on the Divine Will
Washington, D.C.
September, 1862
This fragment was found and preserved by John Hay, one of President Lincoln's secretaries, who said it was "not written to be seen of men." Some of the thoughts expressed here, written after discouraging days of personal sorrow and military defeats, also appear in Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address of 1865. The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present civil war it is quite possible that God's purpose is something different from the purpose of either party; and yet the human instrumentalities, working just as they do, are of the best adaptation to effect his purpose. I am almost ready to say that this is probably true; that God wills this contest, and wills that it shall not end yet. By his mere great power on the minds of the now contestants, he could have either saved or destroyed the Union without a human contest. Yet the contest began. And, having begun, he could give the final victory to either side any day. Yet the contest proceeds. Source: The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln

Just imagine: you are standing in line at the movie theater; a half-dozen folks are qued up before you while nearly as many await behind. There is similar line on your left, and yet another to your right. Do not create this mental image, just remember a like occurrence from your past. Can you see it?
Exercise #2
Exercise #3
visualization look at all, just imagine. Of course, to properly imagine something first we must know it in fair detail. How can we picture Tahiti so clearly? Only because we may have read Mutiny on the Bounty , or watched an adventure travel series on television. We know pretty well what Tahiti should look like. It is the same with meditative visualization. Before sitting down upon our cushion (or at least before evoking an image) we need to study up a bit first. we are the artist. So it is rather more important that our private image of Tara express these ultimate qualities than that it should match with exactitude depiction of Her.

Detailed instructions from Zen Mountain Monastery on how to practice Zen meditation.

(you need Acrobat Reader to view this file) Monastery Zazen Schedule Fire Lotus Zazen Schedule Zazen is a particular kind of meditation, unique to Zen, that functions centrally as the very heart of the practice. In fact, Zen Buddhists are generally known as the "meditation Buddhists." Basically, zazen is the study of the self. The great Master Dogen said, "To study the Buddha Way is to study the self, to study the self is to forget the self, and to forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things." To be enlightened by the ten thousand things is to recognize the unity of the self and the ten thousand things. Upon his own enlightenment, Buddha was in seated meditation; Zen practice returns to the same seated meditation again and again. For two thousand five hundred years that meditation has continued, from generation to generation; it's the most important thing that has been passed on. It spread from India to China, to Japan, to other parts of Asia, and then finally to the West. It's a very simple practice. It's very easy to describe and very easy to follow. But like all other practices, it takes doing in order for it to happen. We tend to see body, breath, and mind separately, but in zazen they come together as one reality. The first thing to pay attention to is the position of the body in zazen. The body has a way of communicating outwardly to the world and inwardly to oneself. How you position your body has a lot to do with what happens with your mind and your breath. Throughout the years of the evolution of Buddhism, the most effective positioning of the body for the practice of zazen has been the pyramid structure of the seated Buddha. Sitting on the floor is recommended because it is very stable. We use a zafu - a small pillow - to raise the behind just a little, so that the knees can touch the ground. With your bottom on the pillow and two knees touching the ground, you form a tripod base that gives three hundred and sixty-degree stability.
