BUDDHIST meditation AND PERSONAL CONSTRUCT PSYCHOLOGY. Typologies of meditation.meditation itself has been described and defined in several different ways.
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb/Pilou.html
The following is a contribution to Serendip by Phouttasone (Pilou) Thirakoul, who wrote it during her senior year (1996-1997) as a Psychology major and Neural and Behavioral Sciences concentrator at Bryn Mawr College. Pilou's essay provides a useful introduction to both Buddhist thinking in relation to brain and behavior, and to a branch of western psychology which, with its stress on active generation and regeneration of self, is of considerable interest from a Serendip perspective. Pilou's essay also represents an example of the benefits to be gained by looking at problems from multiple perspectives, and as encouragement to further thinking about the relations between psychological, neuroscientific, and spiritual approaches to problems of consciousness and self-hood.

Introduction
The second issue, that of attempting to intellectualize a soteriological phenomenon (or, conversely, of attempting to apply a religious experience to academic analysis), has been addressed by Blofeld (1981), who acknowledges this tension between the mysticism of religion and the intellectual ratiocination of philosophical inquiry. However, Buddhism is unique in its particular amenability to comparison, as it stresses freedom from dogma and the primacy of empirical investigation. An emphasis on scholarly intellection among the Tibetan Buddhists has also allowed for a balance between religious mysticism and scholarly philosophical/metaphysical inquiry. Indeed, the recognition of Buddhism as a religion with modern intellectual themes prompted Robert Thouless to write, "Across the gulf of twenty-five centuries, we seem to hear in the voice of the Buddha the expression of an essentially modern mind" (de Silva, 1979).

THE NATURE OF BUDDHIST MEDITATION
Chapter 3, from " The Buddhist Path to Enlightenment
BY LAMA DOBOOM TULKUPOINT LOMA PUBLICATIONS 1996, 189 pp. $14.95 (see Catalog listing of this book) In Buddhism it is said that for people to live healthy and effective lives
it is both useful and important for them to cultivate a daily practice of
meditation. By benefiting their own minds in this way, making themselves more
calm, controlled and self-aware, they become both happier individuals and
better members of society. In Tibetan we have the terms rangdon and shendon
which translates respectively as 'the purpose of oneself' and 'the
purpose of others.' To be of benefit to the world, we have to first put
ourselves in order. In the Mahayana, the motivation is to benefit ourselves
in order to be of greater benefit to the world. Meditation is cultivated on
this basis.
The Tibetan term for meditation is gom . Gom literally means to familiarize the mind with a concept, aspect ofbeing, or theme. In this

What is Meditation (Dhyana)?
"Meditation is to religion what the laboratory is to science."
Paramahansa Yogananda Nowadays it is difficult to find people who have not heard of meditation. The majority of them, however, have only a vague notion what it is about and how to practice it. Some people equate meditation with a way of emotional healing and stress reduction, others reduce it to a Hindu or Buddhist method of religious worship. At the extreme, people who practice meditation have been labeled as spacey, emotionally impaired, oversensitive individuals, rushing to fix themselves with the latest New Age contraptions, or as antisocial escapist-yogis having no interest in the world. All these criticisms have some basis in reality, for such qualities may be found among people who practice meditation or live in spiritual communities. Whatever the downside or whatever the label, contemplative practice is an inseparable part of all spiritual traditions; it is both the axis and foundation on which the spiritual life is built. The human mind has two directions, external and internal. Our thoughts are usually directed outward and, much less frequently, inward. And this is natural: in order to avoid discomfort and seek pleasure, we need to be constantly concerned with the external world. So gradually we develop the habit of taking in and reaching out for the external world and, sooner or later, of constantly and restlessly thinking about it. We run after a piece of bread, worry about those close to us, work hard, seek diversions and entertainment when we're tired, and try to resolve our constantly arising problems. This way we are incessantly drawn into the drama of worldly existence, the main hero of which is the restless, ever-curious "me." This "me" has so little time to examine itself that we have but little idea to what degree we are entangled in this drama. We are so lost in, so confused by, the external that we forget who we are and what we really want!

A pebble in the pond. An e-book for the practice of meditation.
"You are the World"
No doubt you have heard the saying before. At doitreal.com this is brought to the web in an
e-book for the practice of meditation. There is also art and craft, pottery, photographs, paintings, information and discussion.
A non-commercial, unaffiliated, human enquiry.
At doitreal.com there is a presentation of text, photographs and graphics which come to you from their author, Peter Stephens.
You are the World. All of us are the result of life's conditions. Our family, social background, education and so on condition, and shape our lives. These lives of ours are called personal, private and individual, but really we share life, and it's conditions.
It might be interpreted that any author, artist, writer and so on, is presenting their images, ideas, or philosophy, so that you may find it interesting, or boring. I'm saying I am an ordinary human being in the world, as you are as well. Yet the world has been made full of divisions. It is disturbing, violent, cruel and corrupt.
Questions arise. What is my responsibility? What can I do? How can I live peacefully and honestly?

Beginning Meditation: Reading about meditation simply adds mental constructs and expectations that become barriers. Thus, I recommend that beginners listen to meditation CDs (using headphones) and read only when they are confused about a specific point.Like anything worth pursuing, meditation requires a solemn vow in order to break through the first stages of mental rebellion. Then meditation becomes a blissful, pleasurable, dynamic experience that you always look forward to.
