Dharma teachings and Insight Meditation practices, known as Vipassana in the Buddhist Tradition, have a single purpose. They point to an enlightened life. To explore these teachings, participation in an insight meditation retreat is strongly recommended or direct instruction from an insight meditation teacher.
May the teachings, meditations, reflections and information contained prove beneficial to all visitors.

Meditation and Yoga
I have to confess that I'm no yogi! I did Iyengar-style Yoga fairly regularly for several years a long time ago, and I still do the occasional class to stop myself from getting too stiff. I would like to do it more regularly, but ... well you know how it is. Keeping up a regular mediation practice and running an online meditation center take up a lot of time. So I'm not setting myself up as some sort of an expert. What I do want to do is first say just a few words about the benefits I've experienced from yoga in relation to meditation, and then introduce some yoga asanas (postures) taught by Dharmapriya, who is a meditator and yoga teacher from Canada who now lives in Germany. I can see four ways in which yoga helped me in my meditation practice and life.
1. Flexibility
Meditating involves sitting still for a period of time maybe 10 minutes, or maybe 100 minutes. The increased flexibility that yoga brings helps the body to remain comfortable during this physical inactivity.
2. Energy

In fact, as taught by Buddha, Dhamma is nonsectarian and open to everyone. I have just returned from the Center in Chonburi, Thailand to Los Angeles. While there, I met several visiting Westerners, including a Swiss private banker, who were seeking a sanctuary from the hectic pace of their normal lives. It is they, who influenced me to create this page. On the most part, they were planning to stay for a few weeks; many stay much longer. One thing I noticed in common was that they all voiced their enthusiastic approval of the benefits they received from their practice of Vipassa-kammathana. This site is dedicated to my grandparents, Mr. Chua and Anong Jantrupon. Mr. Chua is 97 years of age and still helps guide the Center. Special thanks to Mr. Frank Tullius

Meditation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Meditation encompasses an extremely broad array of practices connected to many of the world's religious and philosophical traditions. Different traditions and even personal interpretations may and do affect the meaning of the word, making it difficult to define and reach consensus on what exactly meditation is or what its goals are. For that reason, much of this article refers to specific traditions. Meditation This article is part of the branches of CAM series. CAM Classifications NCCAM Mind-Body Intervention Modality Self-care ... Index of topics Meditation generally includes avoiding (though not harshly) random thought processes and fantasies, and a calming and focusing of the mind. It is not effortful, and can be experienced as just happening. Different practices involve focusing one's attention differently, and a variety of positions and postures including sitting cross-legged, standing, laying down, and walking (sometimes along designated floor patterns). The stated purpose of meditation varies almost as much as the practices. It has been seen as a means of gaining experiential insight into the nature of reality (religious/spiritual or not), or communing with the Deity/Ultimate Reality. Even without the spiritual aspects, many have gained concentration, awareness, self-discipline and equanimity.

Buddhist Meditation in the Theravada tradition
Online Meditation Courses and Support since 1997
"Our behaviour in thought, word and deed is habitually impelled by likes and dislikes which are rooted in ignorance and which are continually determined, governed, influenced and directed by interests. Interests are but ill-concealed manifestations of selfishness sometimes albeit represented as enlightened self-interest. We are strangers to truth and reality as long as we are guided by likes and dislikes. Our actions must be guided by ideas pertaining to truth and error if we seek to understand the causality that governs our lives." - W.S. Karunaratne
Welcome to the Vipassana Fellowship.
Meditation Course
The online meditation course has been hosted here since 1997. Our 90 day course provides a clear and practical introduction to tranquillity and insight practices from the Theravada tradition. The course usually begins in January, April and July each year.
Authentic Texts
All of the documents on this site take their lead from the Pali Canon ; the most authoritative record and guide to the historical Buddha's teachings. They are part of a living tradition that continues to flourish after two and a half millennia.

Psychological State Changes in Meditation
James Kempf
(This article was extracted from the newsgroup talk.religion.buddhism) In couple previous note strings, some requests have come up for information on psychological studies of meditation and enlightenment. There have been many psychological studies on meditation over the years, mostly on TM and, recently, on vipassana. A study that I've found most helpful was done by Jack Engler and Daniel Brown, and is reported in the book "Transformations of Consciousness" by Ken Wilber, Jack Engler, and Daniel Brown (from Shambala Publications). I would highly recommend that anybody interested in psychology and meditation buy the book, because there is much more in it than the Brown/Engler study. For those who don't have access, here's a brief summary. Engler and Brown studied meditators who had gone through the 3 month retreat that the Insight Meditation Society runs every fall at their center in Barre, Mass. The study divided the retreat participants into three groups, with the teachers, who were not part of the retreat, as controls: 1) A group who had not exhibited any particular deepening of samadhi or vipassana during the retreat. They were primarily busy resolving psychological problems of varying depths that arose during the intense inner examination of the retreat.

Introductory Statement Meditation is central to the spiritual endeavor in many schools of Hinduism, notably the Yoga tradition. The Bhagavad-Gita (12.12) ranks meditation above intellectual knowledge, and the Garuda-Purana (222.l0) states: "Meditation is the highest virtue. Meditation is the foremost austerity. Meditation is the greatest purity. Therefore be fond of meditation." This exhortation expresses a sentiment that is widespread in the sacred literature of Hinduism. However, meditation is by no means universally regarded as the principal means of attaining Self realization. For instance, the Bhagavad-Gita (13.24) states that some behold the Self ( atman ) by means of meditation, while others approach it through samkhya-yoga and karma-yoga . Here samkhya-yoga stands for the spiritual practice of discernment ( viveka ) between the real and the unreal, and
