Rational Mystic Sanctuary:
A VIRTUAL DWELLING PLACE IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB
For Heidegger the manner in which a human Being is in-the-world is dwelling. To dwell means "to remain, to stay in a place." He notes that this is the meaning of the Old High German word bauen which he took to mean both to dwell and to build, or building, which is a place of dwelling. But dwelling is not just an activity among many, it is not merely something that we "do" or an action that we perform. Rather we are the human kind of Being as dwelling , always already in primordial relation to the people and things of the world, though in our average everyday existence dwelling is not experienced as our essential being. It is the manner in which we are , for it is not a state but an ontological characteristic of our existence. "The way in which you are and I am, the manner in which we humans are on the earth, is Buan, dwelling. To be a human being means to be on the earth as a mortal. It means to dwell."
1 Heidegger (1971), "Building, Dwelling, Thinking" in

in the Tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin
There are six International Meditation Centres in the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Tradition. All were founded to provide facilities for the instruction and practice of Theravada Buddhist Meditation. Each of the centres in the West is a direct offshoot of the International Meditation Centre of Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Rangoon, Burma), which was founded by Sayagyi U Ba Khin. In addition to being a highly respected meditation teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin was the first Accountant General of Burma after Independence in 1948. All the centres are guided by Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin , two of Sayagyi U Ba Khin's closest disciples, who have practised and taught meditation for more than fifty years and have carried on the tradition since Sayagyi U Ba Khin's demise in 1971. Ten-day residential courses are usually held once a month at IMC-UK and regularly at other centres, beginning on Friday evening and ending early on Monday morning. They are led by Mother Sayamagyi or by a Regional Teacher. The students who attend courses at the centres are from all walks of life, professions, religions, cultural backgrounds, races and countries. Anyone who comes with an open mind can gain the necessary confidence in the technique and in himself or herself. Thus, all can attain benefits which will be proportionate to the amount of balanced effort they make.

Meditation with Art
If Christian meditation is thought, emotion, and imagination that leads to prayer, to conversation with God, then one way to approach it is not a book, but a work of art. Fine art will engage a different senses, and it will communicate. It was used for centuries as a teaching tool, even a catechism. The artist can help us to see something in a new way, or to feel the emotion of an event centuries before. We can use the image as a visual template to enter a scene in our imagination and thus experience the great events of our salvation. Although Christian religious art would be the safest to start with, all art could be useful if it is a method used to talk to God. Remember that God is the original source and author of all beauty. See, Wisdom 13:3 The Catechism of the Catholic Church. , sec. 2129 last sentence. See CCC 2132, Catholic Tradition and Teaching on Religious Art, and Aquinas, II II, 81, 3 (Reply to objection 3). "The beauty of ...images moves me to contemplation, as a meadow delights the eyes and subtly infuses the soul with the glory of God." St. John Damascene.

meditation Meditation is the state achieved from intense concentration on a single object until all other thoughts vanish and all that is left is an intense awareness of the object. For some traditions, that's all there is to it. In yoga, however, the ultimate goal is a bit more ambitious. Meditation is one of the Eight Limbs of yoga outlined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras . Called dhyana, meditation is considered the highest practice and is the final step before bliss. James Hewitt, in The Complete Book of Yoga defines the goal of yoga meditation like this: "…meditation means sense withdrawl (pratyahara) and concentration (dharana), sustained into contemplation (dhyana), with the aim of triggering a super-conscious state (samadhi), which is one of intuitive realization of the identity of the individual soul or spirit and the cosmic soul or spirit." Of course, samadhi may be a long time coming. Frankly, it doesn't matter because there are lots of other benefits to be had along the way. For example, meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improve concentration, clarity and creativity. Or, to paraphrase Patanjali's classic comment about yoga

The principle beings are the five Dhyani Buddhas- the esoteric meditation Buddhas of the five colors found in The Tibetan Book of the Dead and other sources. The contemplative poetry presented here evokes the thoughts and images of these beings using the metaphor of music. Each poem can be looked at as a meditative exercise or visualization designed to tune the reader to the state of mind or spiritual environment of the being that is speaking. The point of view of each being is: First, of a spiritual personality describing his or her essential nature Second, of an actor describing his or her role in the Vajrayana tradition, and the spiritual environment in which action takes place Third, of a spiritual guide giving advice to the seeker

What is Meditation?
Have you ever watched a sunset, sat by the ocean, or taken a walk in the forest and felt complete inner peace and well-being? That is the same feeling that is experienced during meditation practice.
Meditation is a period of time set aside every day to quiet the mind. Meditation is a way to slow down, chill out, and get in touch with the eternal side of your being. Initially in meditation, thoughts are slowed down, and eventually, thought stops completely. The height of meditation is a state called samadhi where the mind is completely merged with worlds of perfect light. Meditation recharges you and helps you get in touch with your inner self. It brings clarity and insight into daily life - you can more easily determine what is really right for you. Meditation makes you happy and bright. It also empowers you to accomplish things in the daily world by connecting you to the power of the universe. Eventually, dedicated meditation practice leads to Enlightenment. The great news is that the benefits of meditation will be experienced right away, beginning with your first meditation session.

The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery
A handbook for addicts and those in recovery, and their families.
Written by Mary Heath for the Zen Group of Western Australia, 1997. Foreword by Ross Bolleter Roshi
Foreword
I warmly recommend Mary Heath's article on The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery. It shows a sensitive awareness and understanding of the difficulties that people face when they decide to come off drugs and gives a range of strategies for helping this process, ranging from traditional Zen work with the breath and mindfulness and walking meditation, to her own discoveries. Taken together these provide a kit from which people in recovery can choose. Its presentation is vivid and straightforward making it an illuminating, practical, compassionate guide to the path of recovery. .......... Ross Bolleter
About Zen
Zen practice is about having time for yourself in a special way. When you take time off to go for a walk or have coffee with a friend, this is certainly having time for yourself, and is important. But Zen practice goes beyond that. To find out about the deepest parts, the most secret and difficult parts, the parts where beautiful things lie hidden, you may need special training. One method of training comes down to us from Sakyamuni Buddha, who lived in the sixth century B.C. in Northern India. He taught that although life is basically unsatisfactory and full of pain and suffering, there are still wonderment and joy to be found. To find the wonder you don't have to live a special sort of life by entering a monastery or cutting yourself off from family life and work (although you may do that briefly from time to time). By noticing and attending to what brings unhappiness you can gradually change your way of looking at things. Why do we suffer? This is the sort of reality most people would like to avoid. But when you give yourself time to look into these deep and secret parts, your lifestyle and relationships will start to work better. Then your life will come alive and blossom right where you are.

MEDITATION INSTRUCTION
By Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche
The practice of mindfulness/awareness meditation is common to all Buddhist traditions. Beyond that, it is common to, inherent in, all human beings. In meditation we are continuously discovering who and what we are. That could be quite frightening or quite boring, but after a while, all that slips away. We get into some kind of natural rhythm and begin to discover our basic mind and heart. Often we think about meditation as some kind of unusual, holy spiritual activity. As we practice, that is one of the basic beliefs we try to overcome. The point is that meditation is completely normal; it is the mindful quality present in everything we do. That is a straightforward principle but we are continuously distracted from coming to our natural state, our natural being. Throughout our day everything pulls us away from natural mindfulness, from being on the spot. Our natural tendency to rush means that we're rushing past opportunities. We're either too scared or too embarrassed or too proud or just too crazy, to be who we are. That is what we call the journey or the path: continuously trying to recognize that we can actually relax and be who we are. So practicing meditation begins by simplifying everything. We sit on the cushion, follow our breath and watch our thoughts. We simplify our whole situation.
