Here are some hints and tips to help you make the best possible menu for your homework:
1) Make sure you know which type of person you are doing your menu for. I doubt that the villein would mind the noble’s food, but I don’t think he would be able to afford it! (I also doubt that the noble wants to eat the villein’s menu!) 2) Set out your menu according to the instructions on the sheet: Give your restaurant a name. Make sure you put the title menu on the top. Make sure you say who the menu is for. Set out the food in three sections: Starter Main course Dessert Pick your foods from the right list (see point #1!) Include suitable pictures of the food or scenes from a medieval village. Make sure you put your NAME on your homework. And finally take a bit of time to make your menu sheet look suitably old. Get out those tea bags or coffee granules and work your historical magic on the work! We look forward to some interesting menus from the Year 7 chefs.

Year 7 Unit 3 Lesson #1
Was life always hard for Medieval Peasants?
The Lesson
The focus of this lesson was on the life of the poor people of the countryside in the Middle Ages. We looked at the organisation of a village and the jobs done by the peasants or villeins of a medieval village. There are a number of things you should have learnt from this lesson. Here is a list of the key points that you need to know:
1) A medieval village was part of the manor
2) The Manor is the name given to all the land owned by the local lord
3) Villeins were given strips of land to farm in the three fields in the village.
4) By having land in each of the three fields, everyone has some good and some bad land.
5) Different crops were planted in each field on a three year “Crop Rotation” system.
6) This allowed one of the three fields to be left to rest once every three years to recover its energy and nutrients: this is called “Fallow”. 7) The other parts of the village were important as well: The river was for fish, washing and water for cooking.
