Hours: T 1215-1, 2-6 Th 1215-1 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will examine the history of medieval France, both classic works and cutting-edge scholarship.  Although the course will cover medieval France broadly, it will focus on Capetian France, ca. 950-1328.  In Spring 2003, the course has three main themes:
Power and Lordship: The rise of new ideas and practices of power following the collapse of public order in the tenth century, including topics such as “the crisis of the year 1000,” the so-called “feudal revolution,” and good/bad lordship.
The Aristocratic Family: How did notions of family shift in the high middle ages? Topics include changes in marriage law, custom, and practice, the role of women, inheritance, and naming patterns.
Rulers and Regions: The development of distinct regions of France, including the rise of principalities, attempts to establish a national kingship, notions of ethnic/political identity, and possibilities for doing research on the regions.

Some Ambiguities Of Late Medieval Religion In England By Dr Dave Postles (University of Leicester, UK) The vibrancy of late medieval lay devotion has been powerfully advanced by some recent writers of a revisionist school, although some more cautious voices have been less distinctly heard. The proponents of the revisionist interpretation do not engage with Lollardy and nor does this article. Instead, it uses the same sources as the revisionists, but some more emphatically, to reveal an undercurrent of ambiguity in religious observance and devotional experience. It can be fairly suggested that the most prominent sources of the revisionists are testamentary records, the fabric of churches, and the homilies and instructions produced by ecclesiastics. Without doubt, the use of the latter is tendentious, presenting an

Medieval British Landed Estates (Autumn Term) This D-course is complementary to and can only be taken in conjunction with the Category A course 'The "Middle" Ages: A New Perspective.' It will allow students to undertake in-depth investigations, based on primary documentary and archaeological materials, into aspects of British economic and social life in the period before- and during that phase of real economic growth from which emerged a distinctive "medieval" society (850-1340 AD). The course is divided into two term-length components. There will be three such term-length components on: Medieval British Landed Estates
Medieval British Towns
Medieval British Trade,
two of which will be taught each year on a rotational basis, in 2001-2 Medieval British Landed Estates being taught in the autumn term and Medieval British Towns in the spring term. Course Organization The course will be taught in each term in 3 x two-hour lectures/tutorials held in WRB room 217, weeks 1-3 to be followed by a period of supervised research which will provide the basis for an examinable project paper. Guidance for Students: Those Economic History/Economic and Social History honours and joint honours students taking the course will be required to produce A PROJECT-PAPER to be and submitted at the end of the tenth week of both the first and second term. Such written class work is included in the final mark accounting for 25%. At the end of the year, the course will be examined by a single two-hour paper from which TWO questions must be answered. The exam will account for 75% of the final mark.
