introduction
the course degree options course structure ... staff Archaeology at King Alfred’s
Wessex is the cradle of British archaeology. There is no more inspiring place to study archaeology than at Winchester, the ancient capital of England and county town at the heart of rural Hampshire. Museums and impressive monuments such as Stonehenge, Avebury, Danebury, Silchester and the medieval town of Salisbury. Students applying to study archaeology will find that the course at King Alfred’s offers plentiful opportunities to record and understand the Wessex landscape through practical and thematic courses. Few students have previous experience of archaeology, many arrive with qualifications in history, geography and natural sciences, but they always find their past experience helpful. Archaeology has something for everyone. top What’s in the course?
At King Alfred’s you can study Archaeology by itself or in combination with a related discipline like History or Tourism. Whichever path you choose the course will offer a solid foundation, with a mixture of theoretical and practical elements, building towards an independent study in the third year. During the three years you spend at King Alfred's you will develop general skills in presentation, decision making and team work, as well as specific skills in archaeological fieldwork and interpretation.

The urban economy
The purpose of townsmen in pursuing self-government was not some abstract philosophy of liberty or self-determination. Its principal thrust was towards creating conditions favouring entrepreneurial endeavour (or, on the other side of the coin, removing obstacles inhibiting such endeavour). First and foremost towns are entities within the economic fabric. This has led some historians to define towns primarily according to economic characteristics:
    • that they must be the site of permanent market activity; and
    • that a significant proportion of the inhabitants earn their livelihood from some other source than agriculture.
    ever-troublesome pig
The former criterion assumes a dedicated market site at which trading is regularized, including occurring at regular and frequent intervals, rather than ad hoc situations governed by whenever travelling merchants appear on the doorstep (e.g. the early

Admissions Home Office of University Admissions: History “To ignore the events before one’s birth is to remain a child forever.” ~Cicero Historians don’t always agree on “what history teaches”: on the scope of its wisdom, on its precise lessons, or on its ways of repeating itself when we don’t listen to it. Beyond dispute, however, is that studying history trains students to think and write clearly, to organize and interpret evidence, and to address complex issues in informed and insightful ways. These skills build the confidence and versatility that our fluid economy rewards, and equip majors for graduate programs in law, medicine, education, and business. A remarkable range of specialties, perspectives, and teaching approaches awaits students in History’s six-member department - a range reflected in the History faculty’s contributions to African-American Studies, Classical Studies, Environmental Science, Great Books, Southern Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. No major is more interdisciplinary or multicultural than history.
