College of Medicine USA Health System Care Centers Maps ... USA Home Welcome to the University of South Alabama's Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Our program is a medium-size, University based residency program which emphasizes a general internal medicine approach to patient care and teaching. The goal of our training program is to provide the knowledge and experience needed to practice internal medicine of the highest quality. This goal is accomplished by offering a broad range of experiences in general internal medicine and its subspecialties. Our program is designed to be flexible to enable one to prepare to enter practice as general internists or to enter subspecialty training. A four year combined Medicine/Pediatrics program is also available. With over 300 years of history, Mobile is one of America's oldest port cities. Six flags have flown over the city and influences from all who have settled in Mobile are evident in the cuisine, architecture, and culture. Mobile is considered the home of the Mardi Gras in the United States. Originally brought from France in 1704, Mobile celebrates it's major event two weeks prior to Lent. In addition to the Mardi Gras, Mobile's events include the only NFL sanctioned post-season football games, America's Junior Miss competition, and BayFest brings music to the streets during October.

Family Medicine and Psychiatry
When I started medical school, I was strongly oriented toward family practice. It never occurred to me that I might be interested in psychiatry. I had this image of psychiatrists as bearded doctors in wood-panelled offices with leather couches who kept basically healthy folks in analysis for years and years with minimal results. That all changed during my third year of medical school, where I discovered that (1) a surprising number of folks visiting their primary care physicians have psychiatric issues affecting their health and (2) psychiatry has moved far beyond the model of endless analysis, and has a number of pharmacological and psychtherapeutic interventions that are at least as effective as the interventions for "physical" disease used by primary care physicians. During inpatient and outpatient psychiatry rotations, I discovered that practicing psychiatry was something that really satisfied the need for patient interaction that was one of the forces which directed me toward medicine in the first place. I decided to specialize in psychiatry, though I was reluctant to give up the opportunity to practice clinical medicine. One day I discovered that there was an organization called The Association of Medicine and Psychiatry which encouraged the development of joint internal medicine and psychiatry residency training programs. I was excited by the prospect of such a residency, but not completely satisfied.

These week-long survey courses are designed to familiarize individuals with the application of information science and computer technologies in health care, biomedical research, and health professions education. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on computer exercises, participants will be introduced to the conceptual and technical components of medical informatics. The conceptual components will include principles of database design, human-computer interfaces, medical vocabularies and coding systems, medical decision analysis methods, evaluation methods in medical informatics, and strategies for designing and managing clinical information systems. The technical components include use of the Internet for biomedical applications, current and emerging wide area network technologies, use of literature and molecular sequence databases, enterprise-wide clinical data systems, and systems for telemedicine. Elective evening workshops will teach personal computer skills such as creation of World Wide Web pages, linkage of web pages to databases, and use of digital multimedia. Taught by a nationally known faculty, the course will prepare the student to become actively involved in making informed decisions about computer-based tools in his/her organizational environment, and improve the student's own computer skills.
