Two Largest Primary Care Medical Organizations Release Joint Clinical Guidelines To Manage Common Heart Condition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LEAWOOD, Kan. - The American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Physicians today released joint guidelines to manage new onset atrial fibrillation, a common arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) that occurs most often in older adults. According to the new guidelines, control of heart rate (not heart rhythm) with chronic anticoagulation medication is the recommended strategy for the majority of patients with atrial fibrillation. The guidelines identify drugs recommended for controlling heart rate during exercise and at rest. The guidelines and the background paper on which they are based are published in the Dec. 16, 2003, issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, published by ACP. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm in which the upper heart chambers (atria) contract rapidly, pumping blood inefficiently. The condition is rarely fatal, but, if uncontrolled, can cause stroke when blood clots formed in the atria travel to the brain. Standard treatments have attempted to convert the heart to normal rhythm, either with medications or electricity, and often use long-term medication to try to maintain the normal rhythm.

Archive: Letter to Congress from Medical Organizations on Tiahrt Amendment Letter to House and Senate Members on Tiahrt Amendment
June 7, 2001
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
U.S. House Of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative/Senator:
As national organizations representing health professionals dedicated to improving the health of adolescents, we write in strong opposition to an amendment offered by Representatives Tiahrt and Graham that was adopted during consideration of H.R. 1, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act reauthorization. The Tiahrt/Graham provision requires prior written, parental consent for medical or mental health examination, testing, treatment, or immunization, among other things. This provision jeopardizes adolescent health and should not be enacted into law. Adolescents are a relatively healthy subgroup of the U.S. population. Much of their behavior, however, puts them at substantial risk for poor health, including alcohol and substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), pregnancy, depression, injury, violence, and suicide. Because these behaviors can jeopardize an adolescent’s development, future opportunities, and even life, barriers to needed health care services should not stand in the way of delivery of health care to adolescent patients. A major obstacle to the delivery of health care to adolescents is concern about confidentiality. Health professionals have an ethical obligation to provide the best possible care and counseling to respond to the needs of adolescent patients. This obligation includes every reasonable effort to encourage parental involvement.

JAMA Study Calls for Medical Organizations
to Unite in Campaign for Nuclear Abolition
August 4, 1998 BOSTON, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ Since Hiroshima, physicians have frequently warned of the horrifying burn, blast, and radiation casualties a nuclear war would produce. Even in the post-Cold War era, the world faces the continuing risks of proliferation, terrorism, and deliberate or accidental nuclear war. An organized, global campaign led by medical organizations in support of a verifiable and enforceable Nuclear Weapons Convention would make a significant contribution to safeguarding health in 21st century, according to a study published in the August 5 Journal of the American Medical Association. "With a united, global voice, we in medicine must call for the zero tolerance of nuclear weapons no different from the world's zero tolerance of chemical and biological weapons," says Lachlan Forrow, MD, principal author of the JAMA article, "Medicine and Nuclear War: From Hiroshima to Mutual Assured Destruction to Abolition 2000," and internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The study, co-authored by Victor Sidel, MD, co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and former president of the American Public Health Association (APHA), of the Department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, traces the history of nuclear weapons, from a medical perspective, since the blast at Hiroshima in 1945 and reviews the current status of nuclear arsenals and the dangers they pose worldwide. According to the JAMA authors, today's dangers include the 35,000 warheads that remain in superpower nuclear arsenals, many of them still on hair trigger alert.
