105. Department Of Laboratory Medicine At Yale: Research, Teaching, Residencies In Cl
Offers major teaching programs at the medical student and post graduate level, including clinical pathology and anatomic pathology residencies and fellowships in transfusion medicine, microbiology and hematologyhemtaopathology.
http://info.med.yale.edu/labmed/
Our Mission The Department of Laboratory Medicine is devoted to the study of the molecular and cellular constituents of blood and other body fluids for the diagnosis and management of illness and for the investigation of the mechanisms and pathogenesis of disease. The Department carries out its patient care mission by assuming responsibility for the clinical laboratories; its faculty conduct both basic and applied research, and offer major teaching programs at the medical student and post graduate level. The Department provides clinical laboratory testing for Yale-New Haven Medical Center. It also serves as a regional reference laboratory for New England, and as a national reference laboratory for various advanced diagnostic assays. Approximately four million tests are performed each year. Committed to providing a broad array of state-of-the-art, cost-effective testing, Laboratory Medicine faculty regularly translate developing technology into routine practice, both as new tests and as better versions of existing tests. Faculty research interests span a broad range and include molecular virology and immunology, stem cell transplantation and gene therapy, cellular adhesion, platelet biology, hemostasis, clinical pharmacology and toxicology, tropical medicine, microbial pathogenesis, molecular diagnostics, structural biology, and laboratory instrumentation and automation. The Department also carries out post-doctoral research training of MDs, MD/PhDs and PhDs under the auspices of a special NIH sponsored program for "Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Post-Doctoral Research Training" with participating faculty from both Laboratory Medicine and a number of other basic science and bridge departments.

Hemoflagellates
Rodrigo A. Zeledón
General Concepts
American Trypanosomiasis (Chagas Disease)
Clinical Manifestations
Symptoms of acute disease may include fever, local or general edema, lymphadenopathy, tachycardia, heart enlargement, and myocarditis. Heart alterations and, occasionally, megaesophagus or megacolon may appear as late sequelae.
Structure
Typical, small trypomastigotes are found in peripheral blood and intracellular amastigotes in tissues.
Classification and Antigenic Types
Strains of Trypanosoma cruzi are differentiated by isoenzyme patterns and DNA sequencing. No antigenic variation is observed.
Multiplication and Life Cycle
Intracellular amastigotes divide to form pseudocysts, which release nondividing trypomastigotes into the blood. Trypomastigotes ingested by a vector bug transform in the insect intestine into epimastigotes, which reproduce to form infective metacyclic trypomastigotes, which are expelled in feces and enter a new host through skin abrasions.
Pathogenesis
Inflammatory reactions around pseudocysts lead to myocarditis and destruction of parasympathetic ganglia (mainly of the heart and myenteric plexus). An autoimmune reaction may develop.

Microassure, Inc. 2003
If you hire, supervise or are otherwise responsible for personnel engaged in the microbiological evaluation of FDA regulated you know just how important it is to have a competent staff. But what constitutes a competent staff? Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) require that personnel have the “education, training and experience to enable that person to perform their assigned functions”. Could you prove that each microbiological professional for which you are responsible for has such competency if you were challenged to do so? Ever hired an industrial microbiology professional only to realize later that they didn’t have the sound foundation and competency that you thought? Administrators are finding that having a relevant degree, years of applicable experience and heaps of training does not guarantee competency. This is even more evident in the field of microbiology since most microbiology methods employ a great deal of subjectivity and technique. Quite frankly, education, experience, training and even certification are only pieces of the competency puzzle. Assurance of an industrial microbiology competency can only be achieved through regular, relevant skills assessments as such provides proof that personnel have the requisite education, training and skills and have not picked up or incorporated undesirable practices.
