Biomedical Science: Medical Microbiology
The medical microbiology department is concerned with the detection, isolation and identification of micro-organisms that cause disease in man. Any part of the human body, whether tissue or fluid can be examined, and these tissue or fluid swabs are inoculated onto culture media to allow the micro-organisms to grow after incubation. Tests are carried out to determine the identity of the organism, and the sensitivity of an organism to a range of currently used antibiotics. This information is given to the doctor who will make a decision on the correct management and care of the patient. The environmental section examines samples of faeces, food and water for the presence of organisms that cause food poisoning. The immunology section deals with the detection of antigens and/or antibodies present in blood samples due to infection with an organism or disease process such as Rubella or HIV.

    98. An Experimental Study On 472 Herbs
Abstract relating antiviral actions on herpes simplex virus by Zheng Min Shi Department of microbiology Jiangxi medical University,China. From Journal of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine , Vol.10, No.1, pp 3941, 1990. Results showed ten highly effective Chinese herbal medicine and related formulas used in treatment of herpes.

An Experimental Study on 472 Herbs Relating Antiviral Actions on Herpes Simplex Virus By Zheng Min Shi
    Department of Microbiology
Jiangxi Medical University, (330006), China From "Journal of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine", Vol.10, No.1, pp 39-41, 1990. Using tissue culture method, the above study was primarily concerned with evaluating the antiviral effects of 472 traditional medicinal herbs comprising raw material 10mg/ml, through both initial (qualitative) and repeated (quantitative) screens, on type 1 herpes simplex virus. When dealing with water and alcoholic extracts, herbs found effective during initial screens were reduced after repeated screens by a range of 28.8 - 80.0 percent. Employing the basic value attained by the simultaneous route of drug administration, a stepwise declining of effective herbs would be: The more the routes of drug administration the less the multiple-route simultaneous efficacy of a herb. Through repeated screens, 10 highly effective herbs were identified:
    • Aristolochia debilis Artemisia anomala Lindera strychnifolia Patrina villosa Pinus massiana Prunella vulgaria Pyrrosia lingua Rhus chinensis Sargussum fusiforme and Taraxacum mongolicum
Clinically, among the 78 cases of herpetic keratitis due to HSV1 treated by Pyrrosia lingua and Prunella vulgaris eye drops, a cure was effected in 38 and an improvement in 37 with 3 being of no benefit.

About the Department Welcome to the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at the University of Central Florida. We are located on the third floor of the Health and Public Affairs building II. Due to specific laboratory needs, classes within the department are only offered on the Orlando campus. The department offers a minor, a bachelor of science, a master of science and an interdisciplinary doctoral degree. Our undergraduate programs offer extensive training in molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, microbiology and medical laboratory sciences. There are approximately 750 students enrolled in the department's undergraduate major in molecular biology and microbiology. Students may enrich their education by participating in one of several student organizations or by working with faculty on directed research. The diverse research interests of the faculty in the department create a unique environment for interdisciplinary research. Our faculty has expertise in a wide range of biomedical science specialties, including microbiology, immunology, infectious disease, molecular cardiovascular biology, neurobiology, molecular biology, molecular parasitology, biotechnology, oncology and nanobiology. The department is one of the most rapidly expanding departments at the university, offering outstanding research and educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral trainees and faculty.
