Welcome to the Division of
MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Head of Division : Professor Ian Poxton Infectious diseases remain one of the most pressing medical problems and are still the major cause of premature death throughout the world. Infection issues, such as BSE, AIDS and E.coli O157, are regularly identified and discussed in the media and persist as major concerns in public health. Medical Microbiology is the study not only of the causative organisms of infection, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, but also the pathogenic effects on the human host. The Division of Medical Microbiology in The University of Edinburgh is the largest in the United Kingdom. The research covers many important and topical aspects including E. coli O157, antibiotic resistance, Herpes virus infection, HIV and AIDS. This provides a fertile environment for post-graduate study and there are approximately 35 doctoral students within the section. The subject also attracts undergraduate students and there is a vibrant honours course comprising over 65 students. The importance of medical microbiology ensures that most of our graduates, both first-degree and doctoral, find employment in research, hospitals or industry.

    Department of Medical Microbiology
Contact Us People Calendar Introduction The Department of Medical Microbiology (chairman: prof.dr. W.J.M. Spaan) consists of three laboratories:
    • Molecular Virology Experimental Microbiology Clinical Microbiology
The activities of the department (housing around 120 persons) include diagnostics, research, teaching and residence training. The department is primarily responsible for all microbiological services within the Leiden University Medical Center, which is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital offering a wide range of advanced patient care facilities, including most categories of organ and bone marrow transplantation. The laboratory also has a regional role in providing microbiological services for primary medical care and other hospitals. The research at the department is aimed at understanding the (molecular) interactions between pathogens and the host. This research is performed at different levels: from molecular genetics of the pathogens to molecular diagnostics and from molecular epidemiology to the development of vaccines.
The department is involved in the University education programs of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and Life Science and Technology and the training programme of the "Hogeschool Leiden".

    Careers in Medical Microbiology
    Public Sector

There are two career paths for medical microbiologists in the public sector either as an MLSO (Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer) or a Clinical Scientist. These two roles overlap slightly.
MLSOs carry out the routine tests in hospitals and public health laboratories, plus some research and development work. Senior positions also involve managing staff and budgets. Entry is open to graduates, usually with degrees that have been validated by the Institute of Biomedical Science which is also responsible for assessing eligibility for state registration with the Health Professions Council
Clinical Scientists work in diagnostic laboratories and pathology departments in large hospitals and medical schools. The Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) is a major employer of clinical microbiologists, some of whom work in reference laboratories or as epidemiologists. Work focuses on disease diagnosis, treatment and surveillance; clinical scientists often collaborate closely with health care professionals. There is some opportunity to carry out research and development projects in the specialisms of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

    Bacterial Microarray Group
Research Interests The Department's main research interest is in the field of intracellular pathogens, particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Three members of our Department belong to an MRC Co-operative grant (held jointly with three members of the Department of Infectious Diseases) which concentrates on intracellular pathogens. Post-genomic research is an important part of our research which includes the study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, of bacterial gene transcription by microarray chip technology and translation in vitro and in vivo. Another major area of our research is bacterial dormancy, especially in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Our Department is actively investigating the way in which bacterial chaperonins interface with mammalian cells, especially in bone (supported by a programme grant from ARC), the molecular structure of bacterial chaperonins, molecular epidemiology and chemotherapy of tuberculosis. We are also studying viruses such as cytomegalovirus and influenza. Intranet Webcam Frequently Asked Questions Vacancies ... Contact Info.

    · Training test in medical microbiology ·
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae is considered susceptible when penicillin MIC is: 0.5 mg/l 0.006 mg/l 2 mg/l 8 mg/l
  • Look at the picture of an agar plate inoculated with a bacterium; two antibiotic disks are laid on the surface. The plate was inoculated with a pure culture of the bacterium.
  • The growh around the disks may show : Small colony-variants of susceptible cells Colonies of cells with higher susceptibility grown from the a mixed culture Mixed inoculum consisting of a susceptible strainX and a different resistant strain Y. None of the above
The phenomenon shown above may be explained also by: Two different populations of cells Heteroresistance Improper technique None of the above
The phenomenon is typical and is very often encountered if the examined strain is: Streptococcus pneumoniae and the disks contains gentamicin Streptococcus pyogenes and the disks contains ampicillin Staphylococcus aureus and the disks contains oxacillin Staphylococcu epidermidis and the disks contains methicillin
Mechanism of resistance to macrolides is explained: by mutation in the gene detremining gyrase Acetylation of the antibiotic Modification of ribosomes Impaired permeability
Chromosomal mutation causes resistance to: Beta lactams in pneumococci Macrolides in E.coli
