[Print Friendly Version] Media Note: United States and United Kingdom Work Together on Energy Partnerships USUN Press Release United States Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky and United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Margaret Beckett today announced a partnership to work together to alleviate poverty and increase access to modern, cleaner and more affordable energy services in developing countries. The United States and the United Kingdom will work together under the U.S.-sponsored Clean Energy Initiative and the U.K.-originated Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, two programs established at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development to further the energy sector’s contribution to economic, social and environmental development. The announcement was made at the 12th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in New York. By signing a joint statement at today’s announcement, the United States joins the U.K. Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, and the United Kingdom joins the U.S. Clean Energy Initiative. Members of the two mutually supportive partnerships will share knowledge, communicate across national boundaries and help to promote best practices that increase access to cleaner energy resources, including the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The Clean Energy Initiative enhances developing country access to a full range of cleaner energy technologies with the goal of supporting cleaner economic growth. The focus of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership is on energy efficiency and enhancing renewable energy’s price competitiveness and market penetration. Both partnerships bring together governments, private sector and civil society organizations to promote investment, apply technology and develop new business, financial, legal and regulatory solutions.

It has a long history as a major player in international affairs and fulfils an important role in the EU, UN and Nato. The economy - one of the largest in the world - is no longer manufacturing but services-based, with e-commerce of growing significance. The City of London is a global financial centre. Many of the country's people have never been richer, but a recent international study says the UK has the second highest child poverty rate in the European Union. OVERVIEW FACTS LEADERS MEDIA The country has not yet adopted the euro currency and the debate continues over when, and indeed whether, it will do so. The government has said that a series of economic criteria must be met before a referendum on the issue is held. After decades of violent conflict in Northern Ireland, the Good Friday agreement of 1998, which led to a new assembly with devolved powers, brought hope of a lasting peace. While there has been progress, there are continuing arguments over arms decommissioning and alleged paramilitary activity. Tension between the unionist and nationalist communities still simmers. The assembly was suspended in autumn 2002 when a row erupted over allegations about IRA activities. Elections were held in late 2003 but the deadlock continues and the assembly has yet to reconvene.

But is the real news being ignored? Sad cynical it may be, but recent news demonstrate that, when it comes to trade unions, the media are interested in only two things: strikes and union interventions in the Labour Party. The trick is for unions to turn this exposure to their advantage when publicising the work they do for individual members. The headlines that dominated this year's union conference season did not proclaim the progress that unions are making in gaining recognition in the workplace, nor the record amounts of compensation they are winning for people injured or unfairly treated at work. Instead, the media highlighted political conflict. It was the row over public services that stoked the media's interest. This issue, being important on both an industrial and political level, has placed unions centre stage. This is no doubt a good thing for the trade union movement. However, for those who work with or for unions in order to promote what they do for working people, it is frustrating to see this upsurge of interest when it is such a battle to maintain it on less confrontational stories.
