    http://ucbiotech.org/resources/biotech/talks/misc/APS_tlk.html
Talking Biotechnology in the Community Peggy G. Lemaux, Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley CA
    Introduction
Scientists can play a role in shaping and contributing to the dialogue and debate relating to agricultural practices and technologies, but they must be prepared. As scientists, it is not always straightforward to move from the laboratory bench to the park bench to discuss your science with your neighbors. Such discussions require that you reduce the complexity of what is done to something that can be understood by those not involved in the scientific profession. Scientific jargon, the BACs, the YACs and the SNPs, has to be left behind in the office and laboratory. Even concepts as commonplace as millimeters and milliliters, backcrossing and genes are very foreign to most people.
The Biotechnology Debate: A Scientific or Social Issue?
While once optional, communicating with the public about what we do is now a necessity for scientists. But, it is important to realize that the debate is not strictly scientific in nature; it has become a discussion that focuses on social issues as well. This was confirmed for me by a recent study by Eric Abbott at Iowa State. Studies in the early 1990s of media coverage showed that in the area of agricultural biotechnology scientists and industry representatives were most often used as sources. Since that time, issues surrounding GM crops have moved from being a scientific or technical issue depending on scientific journal articles, papers and conferences, to a social issue with discussion covering a much wider range of issues, like economics, politics, and social consequences

    Agricultural Trade Issues
Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
The Trade and Agriculture Program of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy focuses on international trade policies, practices, and treaties that affect consumers, farmers and rural communities in the United States and around the world. Food First is a member-supported, nonprofit 'peoples' think tank and education-for-action center. Our work highlights root causes and value-based solutions to hunger and poverty around the world, with a commitment to establishing food as a fundamental human right. Food First produces books, reports, articles, films, electronic media, and curricula, plus interviews, lectures, workshops and academic courses for the public, policy makers, activists, the media, students, educators and researchers. We participate in activist coalitions and furnish clearly written and carefully researched analyses, arguments and action plans for people who want to help change the world. Food First provides leadership to the struggle for reforming the global food system from the bottom up, offering an antidote to the myths and obfuscations that make change seem difficult to achieve. International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) was established in Geneva in September 1996 to contribute to a better understanding of development and environment concerns in the context of international trade.

    Overview
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is part of the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Our mission is to provide timely and accurate forecasts and watches for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes over the contiguous United States. The SPC also monitors heavy rain, heavy snow, and fire weather events across the U.S. and issues specific products for those hazards. We use the most advanced technology and scientific methods available to achieve this goal. If you are interested in the history of the SPC we have a set of pages that document much of the history of the SPC The SPC uses its suite of products to relay forecasts of organized severe weather as much as three days ahead of time, and continually refines the forecast up until the event has concluded. All products issued by the Storm Prediction Center are available on the World Wide Web. Our products are commonly used by local National Weather Service offices, emergency managers, TV and radio meteorologists, private weather forecasting companies, the aviation industry, storm spotters, agriculture, educational institutions and many other groups. A detailed description of all of the SPC products is available
