Fast Marching Methods and Level Set Methods are numerical techniques which can follow the evolution of interfaces. These interfaces can develop sharp corners, break apart, and merge together. The techniques have a wide range of applications, including problems in fluid mechanics, combustion, manufacturing of computer chips, computer animation, image processing, structure of snowflakes, and the shape of soap bubbles.
These are two fundamentally different approaches to the problem of tracking moving interfaces, yet they share a common theory and numerical methodology. This web page serves as both an introductory and advanced resource for these ideas, with the goal of providing
  • an intuitive understanding of the techniques
  • the history, evolution, and application of these methods
  • technical details and reference material.

64. EMU - About EMU
of a programme still being developed at Sandia Laboratories.......The Emu code models fracture and failure of materials and structures. It is based on the Peridynamic theory of solid mechanics. Emu is a threedimensional meshfree Lagrangian code.
http://www.sandia.gov/emu/emu.htm
About EMU Theory Applications Collaborations Emu predicts the deformation and failure of bodies and structures under dynamic loading especially failure due to fracture. It can model any number of fractures and allows them to grow in complex patterns. Emu is the first code based on the peridynamic theory of solid mechanics. The peridynamic theory replaces all of the equations of the conventional theory of continuum mechanics. It uses integral, rather than differential equations. The integral equations remain valid regardless of any fractures or other discontinuities that may emerge in a body due to loading. In contrast, the differential equations of the classical theory break down when such a discontinuity appears. So, the underlying mathematical model in Emu is very different from what is found in finite element codes. Because Emu uses this alternative set of underlying equations, cracks emerge spontaneously as a result of the equations of motion and material model. The cracks grow in whatever direction is energetically favorable for growth.

C A M E O is a modular expert system, a computer program that predicts the products of organic reactions given starting materials, reagents and conditions. The analyses primarily feature mechanistic reasoning and have been extended to cover most of the major classes of organic reactions (currently: Basic/Nucleophilic, Acidic/Electrophilic, Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution (EAS), Radical, Heterocyclic, Pericyclic, Oxidative/Reductive, Carbene, Pd Organometallic and Photochemical). An important aspect of the project has been to clearly define the logic behind accurate prediction of products and to simultaneously search for organizing principles governing organic reactivity. The capabilities of the program as of 1990, illustrated with comparisons to reported experimental reaction sequences, have been summarized in the following review: "CAMEO: A Program For The Logical Prediction Of The Products Of Organic Reactions"

How to Build a Geodesic Dome out of Cardboard
This site was designed in response to people asking us how we made our domes and who were interested in making their own.
The design was borrowed from a 1973 edition of Popular Mechanics and was improved upon to meet the rigors of the Black Rock Desert.
They are fairly inexpensive to build as recycled cardboard is the main component and, if water-based paint is used, can be burned. The domes are strong enough to attach decorative pieces and lighting components to the inside.
Assembly time, on site, is 3 to 4 hours for 3 people constructing one dome with the appropriate tools. Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments about dome construction or the outline of this web site. If you do end up building one or more of these domes for the Playa, please let us know where we can find you.

The Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials (SEMM) Program of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering , at the University of California, Berkeley , has an international reputation for excellence. The Program of Instruction offers excellent opportunities for study and research leading to advanced degrees in the areas of structural analysis and design, mechanics of structures and solids, and materials in structures and construction. Many of the fundamental developments underlying the state-of-the-art in structural engineering, mechanics and materials were pioneered by SEMM faculty and students. Today, this tradition of excellence continues through vigorous programs of basic and applied research, and careful attention to instruction. The active involvement of SEMM faculty in forefront research projects and in the solution of challenging real world engineering problems results in an instructional program that is up-to-date and relevant. Graduates from the SEMM program have gone on to become world leaders in private practice, government service, education and research. Programs of study can be easily tailored to fit individual needs and interests, whether broad-based and multidisciplinary, or narrowly focused and highly technical. The curriculum provides a strong basis for advanced professional practice, research or teaching.

  • Research to better understand how students learn (or do not learn) basic engineering subjects. Development of educational materials that will help students achieve the necessary, fundamental understanding of engineering subjects.
In a second area of focus, Professor Steif investigates stress development and cracking during cryo-preservation of biological tissues, in collaboration with Yoed Rabin and Michael Taylor . One major impediment to cryo-preserving tissues of substantial size are the temperature gradients which accompanying cooling and thawing. These temperature gradients can give rise to unacceptably high levels of stresses that cause cracking. This project seeks to combine experimentation and modeling to capture the mechanical behavior of tissues at representative temperatures and predict how such tissues respond to realistic cryo-preservation protocols.
