Significant Points
  • Electrical and electronic engineering technicians make up 42 percent of all engineering technicians.
  • Because the type and quality of training programs vary considerably, prospective students should carefully investigate training programs before enrolling.
  • Opportunities will be best for individuals with an associate degree or extensive job training in engineering technology.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Handbook section on installation, maintenance, and repair occupations. Engineering technicians who work in research and development build or set up equipment, prepare and conduct experiments, collect data, calculate or record results, and help engineers or scientists in other ways, such as making prototype versions of newly designed equipment. They also assist in design work, often using computer-aided design (CAD) equipment. Most engineering technicians specialize in certain areas, learning skills and working in the same disciplines as engineers. Occupational titles, therefore, tend to reflect those of engineers.

Mechanical engineering is the most diverse and exciting of all the engineering disciplines. It is specifically concerned with the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has moveable parts. If an object is man-made, mechanical engineering skills will have been involved at some stage during its development and manufacture. For society this means that mechanical engineers are using their wide range of skills to think of ways to improve the way we live. Mechanical engineers work in all kinds of industries and so can find jobs, for instance in:
  • Design – turning plans into new products or revising existing ones.
  • Research and Development – continually trying to find solutions to engineering problems, using new technologies when they become available.
  • Production – planning and designing new production processes.

Mechanical Engineer - We Make Machines… and More!
Have you ever wondered what an engineer does? When I was six and said I wanted to be an engineer, I was thinking in terms of driving trains. When I was ten, I thought engineers built engines. Period. It wasn't until I was in high school that I learned the truth: engineers build everything! From the space shuttle to the Golden Gate Bridge, from the cars we drive to the cans we drink from, from the chair you're sitting on to the computer monitor you're looking at, engineers of one kind or another were in on the planning and the production. There are at least 25 kinds of engineers, and the broadest in scope is mine . . . I'm a mechanical engineer. Engineers do practical design and production work using the principles of science and mathematics to come up with economically viable solutions to technical problems.
