Religious Affiliation of U.S. Presidents Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. The combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. On the other end of the scale, the most under-represented religious group is Catholicism, which has had only one U.S. president (John F. Kennedy), despite making up 26% of the current U.S. population. Major religious groups in the U.S. which have never had a U.S. president include: Lutherans (about 5% of the U.S. population); Jews (about 2% of the U.S. population); Latter-day Saints (2%); Pentecostals (about 1.8 %); Muslims (approx. 1 to 1.5%); Eastern Orthodox (approx. 1%); and Churches of Christ (1%). Gould Hardcover - 294 pages (February 1981) Univ Pr of Kansas; ISBN: 0700602062 by William H. Armstrong Book Description Major McKinley is the first complete account of the Civil War service of President William McKinley, the last of the Civil War veterans to reach the White House and the only one who served in the ranks. McKinley enlisted as a private in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (later commanded by another future president, Rutherford B. Hayes) and was the regiment's commissary sergeant when his bravery at the Battle of Antietam led to a commission and an assignment to Hayes’s military staff. McKinley regarded the end of slavery as the significant outcome of the war and valued the contributions of the black soldiers in the Union army. After the war, as a young lawyer and congressman, he defended the rights of freedmen and did so long after others had tired of the cause. He also reached out to former Confederate soldiers in an effort to help restore unity to a divided country. This initiative eventually overshadowed and diminished his advocacy of civil rights.

Thursday, June 10, 2004 Homework Help Forum Homework Help Experts William McKinley: The Imperial President William Thomas McKinley, the twenty-fifth president of the United States, was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio. He spent the early part of his life in the town of his birth, moving to nearby Poland, Ohio when he was ten years old. His father, William, Sr., worked as an iron foundry worker while his mother, Nancy, a devoutly religious woman, worked as a nurse. As a result of this upbringing, McKinley grew up with a strong sense of a work ethic as well as a knowledge of the importance of prayer, courtesy, and honesty in all dealings. This upbringing would serve him well throughout his political career. McKinley’s formal education began in the public school system, but as a result of his family moving to Poland, McKinley attended private school, Poland Academy. McKinley excelled at reading, debating, and public speaking, and was elected president of his school’s first ever debating club. At the age of 16, William attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, but was forced to leave due to illness. After getting well, he chose not to go back to school because of the strain it would put on his family’s finances. Therefore, he went to work, first as a postal clerk, and then as a teacher. McKinley was working as a teacher near Poland when the Civil War broke out in 1861. McKinley enjoyed an impressive military career. Along with his cousin, he enlisted in the 23rd regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving under the command of future president, Rutherford B. Hayes. This relationship would turn into a lifelong friendship, as Hayes would serve as a mentor to McKinley during his political career. McKinley’s first battle was at Carnifax Ferry, West Virginia. He was later promoted to the rank of commissary sergeant. At the Battle of Antietam, against the advice of his superiors and under heavy enemy fire, he was promoted to second lieutenant after delivering food to his troops. By the time the war had concluded, McKinley had attained the rank of brevet major. With the conclusion of the Civil War came the conclusion of McKinley’s military career, and he returned home to study law.
