Gould, University of Texas, Emeritus Biography: A Life in Brief For a long time, William McKinley was considered a mediocre President, a chief executive who was controlled by his political cronies and who was pressured into war with Spain by the press. Recent historians have been kinder to McKinley, seeing him instead as a decisive President who put America on the road to world power. McKinley's difficult foreign policy decisions, especially his policy toward China and his decision to go to war with Spain over Cuban independence, helped the U.S. enter the twentieth century as a new and powerful empire on the world stage. Political Opportunities Born in 1843 and raised in Ohio, William McKinley planned as a young man to become a Methodist minister. When the Civil War started, McKinley proved a valiant soldier, rising in the ranks from a private to a brevet major on the staff of Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes, who became a lifelong friend and mentor. When he returned to Ohio to practice law, he used his connections with Hayes to rise rapidly in Ohio politics. He served in Congress from 1877 to 1891 before becoming governor of Ohio. Congressman McKinley was the Republican Party's leading spokesman for protectionism in foreign trade. His McKinley Tariff of 1890 established substantially higher tariff rates on imported goods in order to protect U.S. business and manufacturing.

William McKinley 25th President of the United States
Biography William McKinley was the 25 th president of the United States. He was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio, a town of about 300 people at that time. He was the 7 th rd regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which was under the command of Rutherford B. Hayes, the future U.S. president. His first battle was at Carnifax Ferry, W. Virginia. He was later promoted to commissary sergeant and at the Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862), while his regiment was under intense enemy fire, and against the advice of his superiors, he took food to the troops. Because of this act of bravery, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. By the time the war was over he had attained the rank of brevet major. William returned to Poland, Ohio where he studied law with Judge Charles Glidden. In 1866 he entered law school in Albany, New York, but he did not graduate. In 1867 he was admitted to the bar in Warren, Ohio. He moved to Canton, Ohio where two of his sisters were schoolteachers and he got a job working for Judge George Belden. Belden was so over-burdened with cases that he offered one to McKinley. McKinley won the case and so impressed the judge that he was paid $25.00 for the case and was given a job. Later, McKinley opened his own law office and became active in the politics of the Republican Party. He was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Stark County in 1869.

THE McKINLEY ASSASSINATION HISTORICAL SITE
On September 6, 1901, in Buffalo, New York at the Pan-American Exposition, a young man with a slender face and blonde-brown hair walked up to the President of the United States in a greeter's line at the Temple of Music exhibit with a handkerchief bandaged around his right hand. Under the handkerchief was a .32 caliber Johnson revolver. Two quick shots rang out.
The young man who shot President William McKinley was a twenty-eight year old named LEON CZOLGOSZ (pronounced cholgosh). Czolgosz was an independent anarchist, who though having met with prominent anarchists of the day such as Emma Goldman, had no legitimate connection with them. The Anarchist movement fiercely believed that all rulers, governing officials, rich capitalists, and ordained clergy should be wiped out. Czolgosz believed the death of the President of the United States would generate positive press of his movement and send fear through other leaders warning them to change their ways.

GENERAL: William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. During his administration, the two important issues of tariff and currency were overshadowed by the Spanish-American War of 1898. Under his administration, the United States gained its first overseas possessions, presenting the country with new problems of world power and territorial expansion. BIOGRAPHY: William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843, the seventh child of William and Nancy McKinley. William briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Following the war, he studied law, began practicing in Canton Ohio, and married Ida Saxton. At age 34, McKinley won a seat in Congress. He was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee. Those who served with him attest that in his votes, he often sided with the public and avoided private interests. During his 14-year tenure with the House, McKinley became a leading expert on tariffs. He later became governor of Ohio, serving two terms. As a congressman, governor and later, president, McKinley, a man of moderation and compromise, held firmly to two beliefs: favorable tariff to stimulate American business and limited coinage of silver.

William McKinley (1843-1901), an American statesman, 25th President of the United States, born at Niles, Ohio, January 29, 1843. When he was two years old his parents moved to Poland, Ohio, and he received his early education at the Poland Seminary. In 1860 he entered Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, but ill health compelled him to discontinue his studies in the first year. After teaching school for a short period, he enlisted, in June, 1861, in the Twenty-third Ohio Infantry, under command of Colonel (subsequently General) W.S. Rosecrans, and served through the war, gaining the rank of brevet major for gallantry at Antietam, Opequon Creek and Cedar Creek. At the close of the war, 1865, he returned to Poland, began the study of law, and after a year in the Albany Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1867. McKinley was reelected in 1900 with increased majorities, receiving 292 of the 477 electoral votes. He had won a place in the hearts of many of his supporters as one of the most beloved of American statesmen; his second term had had an auspicious beginning, and his foreign and domestic policies were received with favor. On Sept. 6, 1901, while holding a public reception at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, he was shot and fatally wounded by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. He died September 14, succeeded in office by Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt.
