Ten Web Sites For Kids We pick the best for fun and education. Reviewed By Jonn Salovaara We've scoured the online universe for stimulating sites to delight your children. What follows are some of the best. Age recommendations are approximate. It's always a good idea to help younger kids navigate a site, at least the first time. Our ratings run from one to four stars. If you've got favorites, be sure to contact us at dadmag "feedback." Seussville www.randomhouse.com/seussville/ Okay, this is Random House trying to sell even more Seuss products. Still, if your kid has even seen a Dr. Seuss book, he or she is going to love seeing the "game" (actually a sort of electronic "flap" book) made from the illustrations. Click on one fish, what do you get? Two fish. And so on. At least the text, maybe a little too small, is printed on the pictures. (preschool)** Checkers http://darkfish.com/checkers/Checkers.html

Testimonial Librarian on the Cutting Edge of Technology A trek to teaching information literacy and using the web to create learning resources Using technology for learning is not a new concept for me. I have been using computers to access information for many years. I had my first son on my knee while setting up and configuring our first Apple IIe computer in 1980. My children have grown up with using computers. I have learned and changed with the times in all of the libraries I have worked in; first in the public libraries using computers instead of a card catalog, then in public schools using educational programs, and also in a collegelibrary using sophisticated databases. In my current position, I advocated getting the library on line in order to access information available on the World Wide Web. As Director of Library Services at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, I serve a large adult population and a religious school in addition to a Day School. I will address my teaching strategies with the Day School faculty and students (K-8) from here on. BHC Day School just received accreditation as a new AIMS (Association of Maryland Independent Schools) school in 1998 and the library just got on line to the Internet last year. We had already had a computerized catalog with Athena. We have one

Exploring Ancient History on the Web
Introduction Using the major search engines to search for ancient history Web sites for the classroom may produce overwhelming results. For example, a search on AltaVista for the phrase "ancient history" will result in a lengthy list of over 37,000 Web pages. A better route may be to begin with a database of educational sites such as Awesome Library at http://www.awesomelibrary.org/ . Although the Awesome Library consists of 14,000 sites, each one is carefully reviewed, briefly annotated, organized under classroom subject headings, and searchable by keyword. The Ancient Civilizations section is neatly arranged by culture subtopics, including the Ancient Chinese, Ancient Greeks, and Ancient Mayans. Users can look for the best sites for teachers, kids, teens, parents, librarians, or the community depending on their individual needs. The sites listed below can aid students and teachers in uncovering images, articles, activities, virtual tours, timelines, and downloadable maps to supplement the study of ancient history. Did the Sun Trigger Mayan Collapse?
Mayan pyramid. Could past civilizations have floundered because of a change in climate? It's a question that is incredibly tricky to answer. First, you have to know that a civilization flourished and subsequently perished. Then, you need evidence suggesting that changes in the historical climate were responsible for a civilization's downfall.
Solar Flares Caused Drought
Now some scientists think they've teased out evidence that the famous Mayan civilization that flourished on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula may have wasted away because of a periodic drought. They think that the drought resulted from episodic solar events called solar forcings, or flares, that resulted in a few years of warmer drier weather every 206 years or so. That the Mayans would perish in the face of drought is not an unreasonable idea, since they were especially dependent on rainfall. You see, the Yucatan peninsula has little in the way of extra water stored in subsurface water tables, so a period of dry weather could be disastrous to people trying to grow crops. David Hodell, of the University of Florida, and his colleagues discovered the evidence out of an ancient muddy lake bottom located on the Yucatan peninsula. They removed a 4.9-meter core that represented a 2,600-year climate record from Lake Chichancanab. To read ancient climate, the researchers focused on gypsum levels in the lake's core.
