Mayans and More: DXing Central America
By Don Moore
A slightly edited version of this article was originally published in the November, 1993 issue of Monitoring Times magazine. Looking for a DX target area with lots of small stations and interesting cultures? But, one that doesn't take fancy equipment and years of experience to monitor? Just look "south of the border" to Central America. Because Central America is so close geographically to North America, even low powered stations can put in excellent signals. Unless the VOA or RCI plops down on their frequency, any SW station in Central America is likely to make it up here. In fact, some Central American DX stations are more reliable catches than a lot of international broadcasters! Historically, Central America consists of the five countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Under Spanish colonial rule, these countries and the Mexican state of Chiapas formed the Audiencia de Guatemala. Central America declared independence on September 15, 1821 and was promptly annexed by Mexico, then under dictator General Agustin de Iturbide. When Iturbide was overthrown in 1823, Central America was allowed to go its own way, but, unfortunately for DX country counters, the northern province of Chiapas decided to remain with Mexico. For fifteen years Central America attempted to be a unified country, but mostly was bogged down in civil war due to regional jealousies and disagreements. The union was destroyed and the Central American congress dissolved in 1838. Although the five countries went their seperate ways, they maintain a strong regional cultural identity.

Author's Description: This is the final version of SCN Punk's "Nyctophobia" campaign.
STORY
The mighty city of Chichen Itza had prospered for many generations. Under the rule of a succession of strong and competent kings, Chichen Itza's influence spread across the Mayan homelands, making the city the most dominant in all the Yucatan.
Then came the day the prophets had been forewarning about for hundreds of years: the day the barbaric Toltec invaders first arrived from over the horizon. With the Toltecs came despair and destruction never witnessed before by the Mayans. The grand city of Edzna, under the rule of the great King Nopaltzin, fell to the Toltecs without a struggle. Edzna was razed to the ground, and all its inhabitants, including King Nopaltzin, were sacrificed to the gods. When news of this horrifying defeat spread throughout the Yucatan, King Gucumatz of Chichen Itza knew he would not be able to hold off the Toltecs himself; he would need support from the rival Mayan city-states to defeat the Toltecs. Without more ado Gucumatz sent messengers to all of the rival Mayan kings, asking for help. The other Mayan kings were reluctant to form an alliance with Chichen Itza, but they knew too well that it was their only hope for survival. Eventually every key Mayan city joined the alliance with Chichen Itza: Uxmal, Izamal, Sayil, even Chichen Itza's archenemy Mayapan joined the alliance. And thus began the bloodiest war in the history of the Mayans...

    74. Mathematics Around The World

    http://public.csusm.edu/public/DJBarskyWebs/330CollageOct10.html
    Mathematics Around the World
Dovie started her presentation by talking about the history of mathematics in Africa. A point was how the ability to make fast mathematical calculations in your head is learned. Dovie then had us all play the game Wari, a mathematical counting game. Afterwards, she continued with the Mayan and the Inca civilizations. I enjoyed the game known as Wari or Mancala. I also find the name omweso in Katz. I did very well. I have been trying to play counting games as often as possible. I enjoy playing twenty-one, or black-jack. I also do not use a calculator to balance my checkbook. It is unfortunate that so little information is available about non-European civilizations. After Dr. Barsky's commentary on Cray, the computer legend who co-founded Control Data Corporation and unfortunately had been injured in an accident, Dovie Jones's presentation began by pointing out that up unti now, most of the mathematics we've studied was domain of government officials only, and how only a selected few learned the methods. The topics covered consisted of Africa and the Americas, Timbuktu University, Mancala (also called Wari, Ayo, Kpo, and Bao Kiswahili), Mayan mathematics, the Incas, and the Quipu. Student lecturer Dovie Jones started her presentation with a discussion of mathematics in Africa starting around the fourteenth century, which was when the University of Timbuktu was founded. Ms. Jones said that the Africans valued texts written by Islamic mathematicians. Not much is known about African history. The African populations were mostly illiterate, so the written record is rather sparse.
