I was travelling independently (not as part of a package tour) and the book helped in many ways to make my trip a great one. It provides a wealth of information about hotels and restaurants, island culture, and places and things to see on the islands. If you can only visit one of these three islands, I would recommend the Seychelles, which offer some of the finest tropical scenery I have ever seen. One advantage of Mauritius for the budget-minded traveler is that it is considerably less expensive than the Seychelles. 67. Cultures Of Mauritius
amongst the down ridden, oppressed African slaves of the different components of societyin mauritius leading to an A few press articles on culture and society
http://www.intnet.mu/iels/culture_mau.htm
Cultures and Languages of Mauritius Back to: People And Culture In consequence of the diverse origins of the population several cultures coexist in the Republic. Due to the fact that around two-thirds of the population is of Indian origin and a small percentage of Chinese origin means that the Mauritian society is very much Asian in character with corresponding values. But Western and African cultural components are indeed very much present in this society. Taken together, the Asian, African and Western cultural components shape the different strata of society. Settlers from France and their accompanying slaves from the African mainland brought with them their languages and cultures. The West has very much been present ever since through the French presence. Law and government was in French till 1810, date of the take over of the island by the British. For political reasons they left in place most of the French legal structure. Even notary documents continued to be written in French, a practice that endures till the present day. That language is still taught at schools, used in the press and publications. The French sugar oligarchy was not dispossessed of its wealth and status by the British and that meant the survival of French cultural influence in Mauritius. English was used mainly by government, in courts of law and eventually taught in schools alongside French. The tolerance of the British towards French and the introduction of English in Law, Government and education have ensured that eventually bilingualism would be common among a significant proportion of the population.

Though her novel, The Rape of Sita (1994), won the prestigious Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, it was banned in Mauritius where Muslim pressure groups objected to its forceful feminism. Getting Rid of It (1997) was no less provocative, dealing as it does with the disposal of a foetus and the empowerment of women. And now with her new novel, Mutiny, Collen examines the themes of justice and repression, again with the emphasis on female vulnerability in a male-dominated society. The first-person narrator, Juna, is in prison as an “allegator”. This is not, as one at first assumes, for making subversive political allegations, but rather for allegations made about her. What these are remains vague and unspecified for the reader, as indeed for the prisoner herself.

Mauritius Culture The Sega is a dance which originated from the ritual music of Madagascar and the mainland of Africa. Sega is one of the cultural pleasures to be enjoyed in Mauritius. Cuisine Half of the population in Mauritius is Hindu and approximately a fifth is Muslim. Both religions are descendent of indentured labourers that were brought during British Colony towork in cane fields. The remaining population comprises mainly Chinese and Sino - Mauritians, Creole (descendants of African slaves) and Franco Mauritian (the original settlers of the island). The latter today still occupy many of the sugar estate and control almost all sugar plantation. Culture One interesting thing of a visit to Mauritius is the variety of cuisines it offers. The most common varieties are Creole, Chinese, European and Indian. A typical Mauritian cuisine includes rougaille (a Mediterranean dish of tomatoes), Sounouk (Salted dry fish), Octopus stew, Daube de poisson and Biryani (Mauritian version). Our favourite Mauritian beverages include Alooda (a syrupsy brew of agar, milk and flavourings such as vanilla or Almond. You can also try our traditional snacks : Dholl puri (our national food), Gateaux piment, Samoussa and Baja. Maha Shivatree Is Celebrated in honour of Lord Siva (February). Following an all all night vigil, Hindu devotees, clad in white, carry the "Kan - war" - wooden arches covered with flowers -in pilgrimage to Grand Bassin, to fetch holy water from the lake. The whole scene is reminiscent of the great rituals on the banks of the Holy Ganges in India.

Mauritius is a beautiful island with charming villages, impressive mountains and some of the finest beaches and aquamarine lagoons in the Indian Ocean. Holidaymakers, who can summon up the energy to depart from the sun-kissed, palm-fringed beaches of Mauritius, will find an abundance of activities to keep them occupied. The island is famed for deep-sea fishing and there are many scuba diving centres. Five golf courses set in impressive locations mean that golfers are similarly well catered for on the island. - - n a v i g a t o r - - Zambia Kenya Namibia South Africa Tanzania Zimbabwe Botswana Indian Ocean Islands Click here to view

Elections Conference Namibia Forum Vibrant Democratic Culture Evident as Mauritius Goes to Polls
by Hugh McCullum
Port Louis, 5 September 2000
The island nation of Mauritius, some 2,000 km off the east coast of Africa, goes to the polls on 11 September to elect its seventh House of Assembly. It is almost certainly one of the oldest democracies among all the countries, which, like it, belong to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
It has had a legislative council with elected members since 1885, long before it achieved independence in 1968 after being colonized first by Dutch, then the French and finally the British.
The country consists of the main island Mauritius, Rodrigues island and a number of smaller outer islands and has a population of more than 1.2 million whose ties to south India, some 4,000 km away, are as strong as those to Africa.
The islands, famed in the outside world for their tourism and stunning beaches, actually are heavily agricultural in nature with sugar the main crop and, more recently, have diversified economically with the successful development of Export Processing Zones (EPZ).
