HISTORY OF MOROCCO Historical Summary Since the beginning of history there have been Berbers in North Africa end they were already well established when the Phoenicians made their first incursions in 1200 BC. Their origins are uncertain but thought to be Euro-Asiatic, The generic name Berbers, was imposed on them by the Arabs meaning those who were not Arabs. Sanhaja, Masmoda, and Zenata are the three tribes constituting the Berbers The Sanhaja , from which sprang the Almoravide dynasty (the founders of Marrakesh) were nomads who in the 11C conquered the desert and much of the region to the south of it for Islam; the Masmouda were quiet farming people who lived in the north and west and in the High and Anti Atlas mountains and it was they who gave rise (from out Tin Mal , S of Marrakesh to the Almohade Dynasty which displaced the Almoravides; the Zenata a sub-group of which the - Beni Marin- swept in from the empty region between the Tafilalet and Algeria to become the great Merinide dynasty, were tough, horse-riding nomads of the cold high plateaux of the interior. Joined to the Arabs only by Islam, the Berhers have always held themselves proudly separate in all other matters, especially in the rural and mountain areas. There is no standard form of Berber language since each tribal group has always used its own version, and there is no recognized Berber script or literature. Their strongest form of self-expression is music and dancing, which is rhythmic but with little harmony, compelling, loud and often quite intoxicating.

Brief History of the Living Standards Measurement Study The following text is taken from:
A Guide to Living Standards Surveys and Their Data Sets. LSMS Working Paper #120, The World Bank, 1995 (updated on March 1, 1996). (To download the complete document, see instructions. The Living Standards Measurement Study was established by the World Bank in 1980 to explore ways of improving the type and quality of household data collected by government statistical offices in developing countries. The objectives of the LSMS were to develop new methods for monitoring progress in raising levels of living, to identify the consequences for households of current and proposed government policies, and to improve communications between survey statisticians, analysts, and policymakers. As of 1997, surveys with several, if not all, of the hallmarks of the Living Standards Measurement Study had been conducted in about two dozen countries. Although the first few LSMS surveys followed a very similar format, as time passed and countries with different circumstances were added, substantial variety arose in the surveys across the different countries. This section presents a brief history of the LSMS. In doing so, some explanations for the different outcomes in the different countries are given. The first two LSMS surveys were fielded in Côte d'Ivoire in 1985 and in Peru in 1985-86. In both cases financing was obtained from the World Bank's Research Committee and the main actor in implementing these surveys was the Living Standards Unit (now DECRG). The purpose of these surveys was to gather data that would allow the detailed study of household behavior and several aspects of living standards and to see whether such a complex survey design could in fact be successfully carried out in a developing country. On the whole, the Côte d'Ivoire and Peru surveys were successfully implemented. The data were gathered according to plan and were used immediately (and still are being used) for a wide variety of research projects and, less quickly and to a lesser extent, in support of the policy dialogue between the countries and the World Bank.

In April 1994 an agreement was signed by Mauritania, Mali and UNHCR representatives regarding the voluntary repatriation of Malian refugees from Mauritania. The Tuareg refugee
camp in Mauritania closed in mid-1997, following the repatriation of some 42,000 Malians.
Meanwhile, in April 1994 Mauritania, Mali and Senegal agreed to strengthen military co-operation in order to improve joint border security.
In January 1995 the Governments of the three countries issued a communique in which they pledged co-operation in resolving -joint border issues and in combating extremism, arms-smuggling and drugs-trafficking.
In mid-1996, at the conclusion of a meeting in Mauritania (Nouakchott) of ministers responsible for the interior, the three established joint security measures on their common borders. (An investigation into drugs-trafficking in Mauritania resulted in July in the imprisonment of seven senior police-officers and four magistrates.)
In February 1989 Mauritania was a founder member, with Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, of the Union of the Arab Maghreb. The member states subsequently formulated 15 regional co-operation conventions.

    History

There are findings indicating settlements in Qatar dating a couple of thousand years behind in time. Evidence indicates also that the climate of this period was not as hot as in our time. However, there is some evidence pointing in direction of Qatar being close to uninhabited for centuries, up until as recently as the 16th century.
Around 1750: The arrival of the a th Th ani family, coming from Najd in today's Saudi Arabia . They settled in the region as fishers and pearl divers.
The al- Kh alifa families moves from Kuwait to Qatar. Persian invasion, driving the al- Kh alifas to Bahrain, but they still hold a great influence over Qatar. Around 1850: Qatar is becoming a centre for pearl extraction, with Zubara in the northwest as the main centre. This activity was controlled by the al- Kh alifa family of Bahrain (now the ruling family). There were at this period serious tensions between the a th Th ani and the al- Kh alifa families.

A Divine Punishment Notre-Dame du Relec Of the original abbey buildings, only the church, the vestry and vestiges of the West wing remain. In the abbey, one can still see the stairway built in 1691 so the monks could reach the dormitory directly after night services and a polychrome stone statue of Notre-Dame du Relec from the 14th century. Calvaires Built between 1450 and 1650, the Calvaries are a local invention of Lower Brittany. While the passion of Christ is the central theme, many other scenes of the life of Jesus and figures of locally venerated saints can also be admired. Le "port du sillon courbe" Camaret, the "back-door" to Brest according to Vauban In 1694, the town repulsed an attempted landing by Anglo-Dutch troops seeking to take Brest. Vauban, Louis XIV's military engineer, had bolstered the coastal defenses by building a tower overlooking Camaret. On landing the invaders were welcomed with heavy fire on the beach at Trez Rouz, and finally retreated after only two hours of fighting, leaving one thousand of their comrades behind dead on the beach ... Laminaria farming Coastal seaweed harvesting, with a scythe, and deep- water harvesting, from boats with guillotines (or sometimes gleaning after a storm), have always been strictly regulated. In the last twenty years, this brown seaweed has been harvested from boats with hooks limited in length to 3.50 m. The laminaria are used in food processing, cosmetics and even in paper making.
