The Passport to Paradise gallery highlights the bold, visual images found all over Dakar by focusing upon the urban visual culture of the Mourides, a Senegalese Sufi movement centered upon the life and teachings of a local saint named Sheikh Amadou Bamba. Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project The Fulbe people have played a prominent role in West African history, and a complete background on the Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project is available as part of this gallery. As cattle pastoralists, the Fulbe people spread across 2,000 miles of savanna land, from Senegambia in the west to Cameroun in the east, over the last one thousand years. As Muslim revolutionaries some of them established Islamic regimes over the last three centuries in four widely separated zones of the savanna. It was in these areas that they adapted the Arabic script to the writing of their language, Fulfulde, and developed other institutions for the dissemination of Islam in West Africa. More than any other single people, the Fulbe have led in the process whereby Islam has become the majority faith of the savanna region. The interviews below are representative samples from the collection still being digitized for this project.

[This information was compiled and provided by The American Friends Service Committee Where is Sudan? Located in northeast Africa, the Sudan is the largest country in Africa. The Nile River extends the entire length of the country (more than 1000 miles),l following north from Uganda through the Sudan into Egypt. Sudan's capital is Khartoum and is located where the White and Blue Niles meet. With a population of 31 million, the Sudan is sparsely populated, and its vast distances present a particular problem for travel and development. What is the economic base? Cotton, gum Arabic (used in candy and cola), peanuts, sesame, and other agricultural products are the Sudan's min exports. Oil fields in southern Sudan are being exploited by Arakis Energy Corporation, a Canadian company, which appears to be taking advantage of the political situation. The water and silt of the Nile are essential for agriculture, and the Nile is important for transportation as well. What is the Sudan's colonial history?

Mauritania
INTRODUCTION
Figure 1. Administrative Divisions of Mauritania, 1987 CONTEMPORARY OBSERVERS OF MAURITANIA, like the French colonizers of an earlier century, often have described the country as a bridge linking North Africa and West Africa. Certainly individual groups within Mauritania have maintained strong cultural and economic ties with their neighborsto whom they were often relatedin both regions. Yet although the country served as a geographical bridge, crisscrossed by merchants transporting gold, salt, and slaves between the northern and southern edges of the Sahara, it also marked a cultural boundary between sedentary farmers of sub-Saharan Africa and the nomadic Arab-Berber herders from the Maghrib (see Glossary). Throughout Mauritania's history, the interaction between the two cultures has been charged with social and political conflict that has defined and will continue to define Mauritanian politics. Even Islam, to which virtually the entire population adhered after the ninth century, provided but a veneer of unity (see Religious Life , ch. 2).
