Water and Culture
by Kerry Zahn , Paris, Mauritania Mauritania forms the barrier between the Sahara and the rest of Africa and is a dry, arid country with a precarious relationship with water. Because water is so precious it serves as an important part in the welcoming of a guest into one's home. Although most Mauritanians are not well off they will always go out of their way to make you feel welcome. This welcoming ceremony includes offering you a bath, making you tea (in three rounds with each round sweeter and weaker then the round before) and many times giving you "zrig," a drink made from soured milk and water and sweetened with sugar. Water is also used in many religious ceremonies. Mauritanians may go to the "marabout," or holy man, to consult him about an illness, who many times will write some Koranic verses on a wooden board. The marabout will use water to erase the words and that water will be considered holy. When people drink this special water they believe they will be cured of whatever is ailing them. My host sister, Maydala, has been suffering for many years from an ailment and three times a day she will drink water that the marabout has made especially for her. by Heather Cameron , Rosso, Mauritania Mauritanians are avid tea drinkers as are many North and West African peoples. They all share the same ceremonial customgreen tea with mint that has become a common part of every day life. In fact, this delicious tea is made in rounds of three glasses and drunk several times a day, including during the blazing afternoon heat. Water is used to meticulously clean the small glasses after each round, as well as to make the tea.

Sources : World Development Report 1983, Africa South of the Sahara 1983/4, US. Dept of State Briefings 1979 (culture, infant mortality) Mauritania is a country of deep-rooted tradition. Until as recently as ten years ago, two-thirds of the population were nomadic herders. But the fierce drought of the 1970s and the drain on the economy caused by the war in the North (which only ended in 1979) have combined to accelerate rural-urban migration and joblessness. Undeterred, many Mauritanians still aspire to be nomadic traders. If in the past the trade was across the Sahara in slaves, gold, salt and dates, today it is by air to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands to bring back watches, radios and cassette recorders. In its unique crossroads position for Arab-subsaharan contact, Mauritania has a rich history. Moorish culture extended into Southern Spain in the eleventh century and the earliest known West African Kingdom, Ghana, is said to have had its capital in the south.

Mauritania's hour postponed
Mauritanian President Mouawiya Ould Taya's sweeping victory at the polls this week might set the country on an irrevocable course of authoritarianism and racial discrimination, argues Gamal Nkrumah
Click to view caption Supporters of Mauritanian President Mouawiya Ould Taya ululate and jubilate in the streets of the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott Mauritanian society is strictly divided into a rigid caste system that flies in the face of the country's supposed march towards democratisation and political liberalisation. The lighter-skinned Arabic-speaking Moors, after whom the country's name is derived, and who have in the pre-colonial, colonial and post- independence eras monopolised power in Mauritania, are not prepared or willing to relinquish power. If Mauritania's traditional ruling elite retain power indefinitely as now seems likely with the sweeping victory of President Mouawiya Ould Taya at the presidential polls last Friday then democratisation is nothing but a sham in Mauritania. Black Mauritanians, women and the underprivileged and politically marginalised must be given the right to have a say in the decision-making process.

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 Jordan, Mauritania sign agreement on cooperation in Islamic affairs He also said the private sector in both countries should be promoted to achieve that goal. King Abdullah was speaking at a meeting with visiting Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmad Ould Sayed Ahmad, who delivered a message to the King from Mauritanian President Ould Sayed Ahmad on means to bolster bilateral relations. Earlier, the Mauritanian minister signed an agreement on higher education and cooperation in scientific fields with Minister of Planning Taleb Rifai. The agreement provides for exchanges of university teachers from both countries, organising seminars and secondment of Jordanian teachers to work in Mauritanian schools. It also calls for the exchange of expertise related to social and cultural fields and vocational training. Jordan and Mauritania also on Tuesday signed an agreement on cooperation in Islamic fields and in promoting Islamic culture. The three-year agreement which was signed by Mauritanian FM and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi, provides for collaboration in organising seminars, issuing Islamic cultural publications and in handling zakat (alms for the poor). Muslim scholars and preachers would also exchange visits. The agreement calls for investments in awqaf (religious endowments) and income-generating projects, coordinated stands at regional and Islamic international seminars, cooperation in combating literature and teachings considered hostile to Islam, and in joint efforts to build Islamic cultural centres.

People and Cultures of the Kingdom of Biffeche Pop Up Picture One of the numerous baby Ronald's named after our beloved King
Peoples of Biffeche
The ethnic groups of Biffeche live together in harmony, united by their love for the Kingdom, mutual respect, and pious submission to, and appreciation of God's will. Although there are some common cultural practices unique to Biffeche, each group brings its own rich heritage and culture; many noble races and ancient Kingdoms and empires enrich our Kingdom today. Pop Up Picture A small Biffeche family shows the loyalty for which our citizens have always been known. Ethnic groups include Peulh (Fula), Sérér-Ndut, Wolof, Naar (Moor) and American, but all are truly called "the Biffeche". Pop Up Picture Madame Sow, one of the wives of Chevalier Malick Sow with some of his children and grandchildren. The Peulh (also called Fula or Ful Fulde) are a nomadic pastoral race, guiding their herds all across West Africa. They are the only nomadic pastoral race in all of West Africa (hence in Biffeche). Unlike the case in East Africa with pastoral nomads, the Fula get along well with the non-pastoral groups in Biffeche among whom they live. They are the largest ethnic group in Biffeche, spread across the countryside in numerous villages. They are a proud race, noble in appearance. "Our language is Pulaar, the most harmonious sounding, and yet perhaps the most complicated of all Biffeche languages." Tukulor people here also speak Pulaar. Most are devote Muslims, a few are Christian and several groups are traditionalist.
