My experience is usually more like "I don't know what on earth that means" ... scribble, scribble, scribble ... "Oh, yes, but what a weird way of writing it" ... scribble, scribble, scribble ... "now *this* should be a much clearer way" ... scribble, scribble, scribble ... "oh, it's identical to what I started with. But *now* I understand it." I can't *read* maths, I can only write it :-) A colleague of mine put it better: "mathematics is not a spectator sport". mathematics

AMS Preprint Server (AMSPPS)
Summary: The AMS Preprint Server (AMSPS) is a service of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), which was created to "...further mathematical research and scholarship....It has approximately 30,000 members, including mathematicians throughout the United States and around the world." The mission of AMS is to "...promote mathematical research, increase the awareness of its value to society, and foster excellence in math education..." and to serve as a major math publisher. At the top of the site are three major links: (1) recent preprints (last 100); (2) browse preprints; and (3) search preprints. The first link produces a listing of the last added 100 preprints, in no particular order. Scrolling to view the listings, users will find the following in entries: (1) author(s); (2) title; (3) preprint code number; and (4) a link to view an abstract of the text. "Browse preprints" lists preprints based on the Mathematics Subject Classification; each category is noted with a description and code number. Selecting a category then produces an index of its presective holdings; users can view all of the category's listings, as well as a chronological listing of preprints. Selecting the "index" link allows the user to view all of the category's holdings; selecting a date allows viewing of one preprint's entry. "Search preprints" produces a query page with a keyword field, as well as searching instructions.

If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.

  • Ask Dr. Math Ask Dr. Math is a question and answer service for math students and their teachers. A searchable archive is available by level and topic, as well as summaries of Frequently Asked Questions (the Dr. Math FAQ).
  • Calculus Help - A professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Hawaii, authored these notes to help students learn how to use, not just understand, the concepts of calculus. A total of fifteen topics are covered and include max-min problems, exponential growth, and the derivation of Kepler's second law.
  • Flash Cards for Kids - This is an interactive flash card site. You can choose among addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; simple or complicated problems; and how many digits the numbers will have. While this isn't exactly high school material, it's a nice site, so I'm including it anyway. Enjoy, and show it to your kid sister or brother!
  • Graphics for the Calculus Classroom - This is a collection of graphical demonstrations developed for first year calculus, but suitable and interesting for high school students as well. From Douglas Arnold at Penn State.

Laterally related topics: Religion Time and Space Mathematics in Recreation Art ... Fractals , and Science The Mathematics and the Liberal Arts pages are intended to be a resource for student research projects and for teachers interested in using the history of mathematics in their courses. Many pages focus on ethnomathematics and in the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. The notes in these pages are intended as much to evoke ideas as to indicate what the books and articles are about. They are not intended as reviews. However, some items have been reviewed in Mathematical Reviews , published by The American Mathematical Society. When the mathematical review (MR) number and reviewer are known to the author of these pages, they are given as part of the bibliographic citation. Subscribing institutions can access the more recent MR reviews online through MathSciNet Hist. of Sci. (1990), no. 79, part 1, 6387. (Reviewer: David Singmaster.) LINK: A Software System for Discrete Mathematics
    Latest version: 1.5.
The LINK project is currently led by Dr. Jonathan Berry, an assistant professor at Elon College, and one of LINK's primary designers. The software is freely available. The original primary investigators of LINK are: Nathaniel Dean of Lucent / Bell Laboratories, Mark Goldberg of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Greg Shannon of MilkyWay Technologies, and Steven Skiena of SUNY Stony Brook. These researchers, each of whom had previous experience in the design of software packages for discrete mathematics, gathered together at DIMACS in July, 1991 and proposed LINK, a system which would be designed to emphasize the strengths of the respective systems and overcome their weaknesses. LINK has been partially funded by NSF grant CCR-9214487 and ONR award 400x116yip01. LINK is a cooperative project of DIMACS at Rutgers University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Indiana University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and The State University of New York at Stony Brook.
