Research Audio Books Consultations ... Home The Effects of Counseling and Study Skills Training on Mathematics Academic Achievement (Nolting, 1986, 1990) is Dr. Nolting's original Ph.D. experimental design dissertation on math study skills. This study was designed to determine the composite treatment effects of math study skills instructional training and/or counseling on mathematics academic achievement. Theoretical Basis for Research Bloom's Research on Contributing Variables for Academic Achievement Bloom indicated that the variance contributing to academic achievement can be divided into three major areas:
Cognitive Entry Skills and IQ (50%),
Quality of Instruction (25%) and
Affective Characteristics (25%) Cognitive Entry Skills and IQ is how much mathematics students knew before entering a math course and how fast they can learn math. This is based on placement scores, previous math grades and aptitude to be successful in math. Quality of Instruction is how the instructor teaches, curriculum design, textbook selections, students matching with instructors' learning styles, and academic support such as tutors (trained vs. untrained), study coaches or Supplemental Instruction. The Affective Characteristics consist of the students' self-concept, study skills, test-taking skills, and locus of control, attitudes, anxiety and social economic status, and student engagement in learning (1976). This experiential design held Cognitive Entry Skills and IQ along with Quality of Instruction constant and changed the students' Affective Characteristics.

Research Audio Books Consultations ... Home In the AMATYC Review, volume 25 (1) fall 2003, Robert D. Lewis, Ph.D. and Katherine Clark, MA describe a learning intervention project at Linn-Benton Community College for developmental mathematics. This project was supported by an NSF sponsored initiative, the Oregon Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers. After a brief abstract of a research study on integrating math study skills into the math classroom learning experiencing, we respond to the strengths of the study and to areas in which this type of effort can be strengthened in its interventions. In order to address the ineffective learning behavior and perceptions of their math students, Lewis, a math instructor and Clark, a study skills instructor, worked together to design a classroom learning experience that infused student preparation, homework organization and note-taking along with community-building activities into a beginning algebra course. They wanted to see if embedded study skills instruction enhance student learning without sacrificing necessary course content as measured by improved student attitudes and successful course completion. The three measures assessed over the course of three terms, involving six sections and around 150 students, were:
  • Students' pre and post self-appraisal of skills and attitudes toward mathematics during the course Students in the culminating term of the project assess the effect of specific instructional strategies and community building activities on their learning skills and attitude.

Read what the instructor will be lecturing on before you go to class. Read slowly. Reading mathematics is not like reading a novel or even history. Speed reading techniques are not appropriate. Every word and symbol is important to the meaning. Do not skip the symbolic part of the text. This is often the most important part. If you do not understand a symbol, look in the glossary or in the earlier part of the text. Symbols are often explained when they are first introduced. If you still can not find out what a symbol means, ask!
Read with a pencil in hand. Every time the author does a problem, do it on your own—either before or after you read his or her explanation. This makes sure you know what steps have been shown and, more importantly, which ones were omitted.
If there is something you do not understand, try to formulate a question about it. Often if you can ask a specific question, you can answer it yourself. If you can’t answer it, you know what part of the instructor’s lecture requires your complete attention. Your question is ready if the lecture does not clear up your misunderstanding. Understand the concepts Don’t be satisfied with vague ideas about how to work problems. Do the examples yourself, understand the concept illustrated, then try making up your own examples. Keep in mind that the questions on the exam may be very different from the example in the book.

Keep up with assignments (whether they are graded or not).
The pace is much faster in college and keeping up to date with assignments helps you to better understand what is going on in class.
Mathematics is not a spectator sport. The only way you can learn mathematics is by doing it. Following are some suggestions for getting the most out of the time you spend on homework.
  • Understand the purpose of homework. Homework in mathematics classes is assigned to help you understand certain concepts and to help you build certain skills. Homework is not assigned to you because it is important to get the right answers. Your instructor already knows the answers.

    Active Study vs. Passive Study
Be actively involved in managing the learning process, the mathematics and your study time:
    • Take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know, and knowing how to get your Instructor to help you with what you don't know. Attend class every day and take complete notes. Instructors formulate test questions based on material and examples covered in class as well as on those in the text. Be an active participant in the classroom. Get ahead in the book; try to work some of the problems before they are covered in class. Anticipate what the Instructor's next step will be. Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have. Go to office hours and ask questions. The Instructor will be pleased to see that you are interested, and you will be actively helping yourself. Good study habits throughout the semester make it easier to study for tests.

Undergraduate Graduate Distance Education General Info ... Search Studying Mathematics By Samuel B. Thompson M athematics is increasingly important in today’s society — not only in science and engineering, but throughout the business world and in the expanding field of computer science. Beyond utility in the modern world, the study of mathematics cultivates the ability to think analytically, read carefully, and write and speak concisely. All UMUC associate and baccalaureate degrees have a basic math requirement. The first key to the successful study of mathematics is starting with the right course. Before enrolling in your first math course, you should take Maryland’s math placement test at your Education Center. Sometimes students do not take the test or accept the placement recommendation and register instead for a course beyond their current skills and understanding. Usually, it becomes difficult or perhaps impossible for them to do well. The result is lost time that could have been productively used in the course that was right for them. Once you have enrolled in the correct course, the following tips on how to study may be helpful to you.

Writing and Studying Skills and Tips How to Not Hate Math This guide may be a bit rough for you.  Math may be the bane of your existence, the thorn in your heel, and the frustration that keeps you awake at night.  Or, it may simply be that pestering little course you must take in order to graduate from high school and complete your college degree.  The good news is that Math will not plague you forever.  You will eventually take the minimum classes in college in order to graduate and then you are finished with it forever.  However, until you get to that point, you must take math classes in high school and at least one or two in college.  We’ve tried to put some ideas together that might make you lose your hatred for the old mathematical skills.  Try some.  You may surprise yourself and learn that you like punching numbers after all.  Math has some elements that are fun and exciting.  You may understand why mathematicians spend so much time with their calculators and theorems.
    • Right vs. Wrong:  In math, there is a definitive answer.  You will never be caught in the subjective world wondering why your grade is low if you did all the work.  There is always a right answer.  No matter how hard you work, you will be able to find the answer eventually.  Because of this establishment, many people learn to love math, for they will never be caught in a world of subjectivity and possibility.
