How to 'ACE' College Mathematics ...
A collection of tips and suggestions that can bring you success in studying and learning college mathematics ...
1. Enroll in the Correct Course (This must be important, it's listed first!!!)
If you want to learn to swim ... you don't normally begin by jumping into the 'deep end' of the pool ... or, worse yet, have yourself dumped into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with not a person, a shore or a ship in sight ...
In other words ... if you are planning to take and be successful in College Algebra ... you should have completed a minimum of two years of high school Algebra (with good grades) and/or have an ACT mathematics score of 21 or above ... before jumping into the deep end.
Also worth noting ... if you took two years of high school Algebra three or more years ago ... and you have not been using these skills on a regular basis ... then a refresher course or courses may well be needed. CCC 'Beginning Algebra' is approximately equivalent to first year high school Algebra; CCC 'Intermediate Algebra' is approximately equivalent to second year high school advanced Algebra.
One final note. If you've attempted to take College Algebra a first time ... and have either dropped out or failed ... it probably has little to do with the teacher, the text book or the method of instruction. In all probability ... it is an indicator that you lack prerequisite skills absolutely required for success.

Read intelligently
...
Subject-specific advice
Read intelligently In general, you'll find that textbooks are designed to emphasize the points you'll need to know - oftentimes there's a summary, recap, or question section at the end of each chapter. Knowing this area well will be far more useful than trying to memorize every word. Also, focus on whatever's said about that chapter in the table of contents: this will reflect the chapter's main function and highlight its important concepts. When reading an assignment, first skim the chapter, keeping your eyes peeled for the subheadings and terms in bold type. Then reread the entire chapter, taking notes as you go. Check back to your class notes to see what areas your instructor emphasized, and any sections he or she may have told you to read extra carefully. You might even want to write a short summary of each chapter when you finish, to see how well you understand (and can explain) the material. Then go back and quiz yourself on all the terms in bold. And what about the ever-popular highlighter? Feel free to highlight liberally, but don't turn the whole book yellow. Also, highlighting is only useful if you go back and read what you highlighted. Reading over your highlighted sentences is a breezy way to study during lunch without getting your notes all greasy.

by Gisele Glosser Try not to frown on wrong answers. It discourages students from participating. Critical thought and honest effort are more important than correct answers. There is no teaching without control of your class. It is better to fall behind by a day or two early in the year than to have an uphill battle all year long over behavior. Avoid talking over your students. If there is too much noise, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop talking. (I am famous for the "Glosser Glare".) Routine and structure are good, but too much of it can cause you and your class to fall into a rut. Try to vary activities from time to time. Encourage active participation from your students. From time to time, call students to the board, or allow them to work in groups. Avoid giving only teacher-directed lessons. (See our article on Cooperative Learning Techniques Try to be flexible. Math can be a rigid topic. But you don't have to be. For example, I have a strict rule against chewing gum. But I close my eyes to it during a test.

Montgomery College Student Development Students often ask, "How can I prepare for the math portion of the test?" If it's been some time since you've taken algebra and math, brushing up on basic concepts can help you feel more comfortable when you take the test.
We don't promise better test results - but you may find these steps useful to ready yourself:
  • www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/AssessCtr/studyguide.htm Determine your weak areas from the pretest. Study using the Math Study Web Sites below or find a copy of a high school or college-level algebra text (try the public library or MC Library if you're currently a student). College is very different from high school and those who succeed in their college math classes succeed because they work hard, develop self-discipline, and take responsibility for their own accomplishments and failures. they could, they would pass the class. This model may have worked in high school but will not work in college. Some students believe just being able to manipulate equations and expressions without understanding what they are doing will be enough. However, the college math classes you will eventually take will require you to understand what you are doing.

    Study Skills
Follow these simple tips when using your MathTV.com CD or subscription to assist you with math homework assignments and test preparation. Work problems out of your textbook every day. Be in the habit of showing your work so that it looks like the work in your textbook, and like the work of your teacher. Before you do your homework, read the preceding section in your textbook. Use your MathTV.com CD or subscription to review material from the previous day. Ask your teacher good questions when you don't understand a concept or problem. Use your MathTV.com CD or subscription to preview new material before you attend class. Try to use the vocabulary in your textbook when you explain problems to a friend, or when you ask your teacher a question. Find a study partner; check homework regularly with that person. Use your quizzes to study for chapter tests. Make a list of problems you find difficult, or that you missed on a test, and work them regularly.

Topic: Remembering After reading "Remembering" from the University of Victoria, "Ten Principles of Memory" from Dartmouth, and "Using Memory Effectively" from the University of St, Thomas, I realized just how vital a good and selective memory is to success in everything. All three sites have great ideas about the subject that are helpful in improving memory. The first article tells that remembering is in two broad types- recognizing and recalling. It also states that in order to memorize information, you must learn it and understand it first so it makes sense to you once you have it memorized. Practice remembering things is necessary to acquire endurance, retention, and confidence in this area. All of these aspects are vital for you to be able to memorize anything. The second article has many of the same ideas, but elaborates on them and adds many more. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding the information and the need for practice and repetition of memorization. Some new ideas are to be sure to get the information right the first time and try to relate it to something you already know and understand. It is also helpful to break the information into smaller groups that are easily memorized at different times in different parts of the brain.

    Math Study Strategies
Always read math problems completely before beginning any calculations. If you "glance" too quickly at a problem, you may misunderstand what really needs to be done to complete the problem.
Whenever possible, draw a diagram. Even though you may be able to visualize the situation mentally, a hand drawn diagram will allow you to label the picture, to add auxiliary lines, and to view the situation from different perspectives.
Know your calculator! If you must borrow a calculator from your teacher, be sure that you have used that "brand" of calculator on previous occasions. If you are not familiar with how a particular calculator works, your calculations may be incorrect.
If you know that your answer to a question is incorrect, and you cannot find your mistake, start over on a clean piece of paper. Oftentimes when you try to correct a problem, you continually overlook the mistake. Starting over on a clean piece of paper will let you focus on the question, not on trying to find the error.
Do not feel that you must use every number in a problem when doing your calculations. Some mathematics problems have "extra" information. These questions are testing your ability to recognize the needed information, as well as your mathematical skills.
