Math Software for Fourth to Ninth Graders
By Jinny Gudmundsen
Published on April 6th, 2001 Math software for children in upper elementary through ninth grade comes in many different formats. Some, such as Math Shop Deluxe , excel in presenting math challenges in everyday situations so children can understand the importance of learning math concepts. Others, such as Code Head: Calculated Risk and Standard Deviants: Algebra suck children into learning math by being funny and edgy. The Hidden Treasure of Al-Jabr
Choosing Children's Software
Math Shop Deluxe
Each of the shops explores a different math activity, and within each activity there are five levels of difficulty. Children learn about equalities, factors, primes, fractions, decimals, percents, interpreting graphs, order of operations, money, pre-algebra and much more.
The program has many nice features including an effective hint system, helpful strategy sessions, and the ability to get a second chance when a child answers a problem incorrectly. Another strength is that it teaches math by appealing to many different learning styles. This title is fun enough to play at home and it also works well in teaching situations.

10 Tips for Software Selection for Math Instruction
Beatrice C. Babbitt, Ph. D.
Associate Professor Special Education
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Are you excited about the potential technology may have in assisting students with learning disabilities in mathematics? On the other hand, are you overwhelmed by the many math software programs available?
Is there any substance beneath the sound, color, cute characters and animation? To help you effectively select technology for math instruction, I've put together a list of 10 tips to guide teachers and parents in selecting instructional math software. The focus here is on instructional software such as concept development, drill and practice, tutorial and simulation software rather than tool software such as spreadsheets or graphing software. The software mentioned is for illustrative purposes only. Tip 1 - The less clutter on the screen, the better. Most students with LD are distracted by too much stimuli coming at them at the same time. Moreover, cluttered screens often distract from the math concept or procedure being studied. Choose programs that use simple screen displays. Tip 2 - Procedures should match those being taught in school.

Software This page has three sections: Mathematics Archives Collection of Software, Abstracts and Reviews For most of the software packages contained in the Mathematics Archives and for many commercial packages, there are abstracts, reviews, references to reviews, and the author's readme files. These materials are organized in four different ways:
First by platform and then by subject.
At the present time, there are two specific platforms in this category:
Interactive Texts.
Interactive texts are a new breed of media in which the reader uses a commercial package (such as Mathematica, Maple or Mathkit) to interact with an electronic text.
By packages.
The multi-platform category contains materials for a variety of platforms including UNIX machines. This area also contains mirrors of various sites and links to the original sites.
By subject.

Your children and students can discover that math is fun and fascinating!
Can your kids grow up happy and prosperous
if they don’t know math?
Here's why Math is Important
  • Every trade and profession makes use of math.
  • Engineers, Teachers, Mechanics, Doctors...you name it, they need it!
  • Good math SAT scores are essential to get kids started right.
Your Kids or Students Hate the Subject?
  • Do they think it's a boring, useless time-waster?
  • They rather be on the soccer field, or listening to their favorite CD's?
  • Or do they find it too easy, and would like to explore more complicated things?
How can you get them fired up and turned on?
  • Show them how Algebra and Geometry can actually be fun.
  • Prove to them that Map-Painting, Soccer jerseys, and Trip-planning all mathematical.
  • Show them the curved pool table and the flat universe.

Plotxy allows the user, either interactively at the terminal, or though scripts, to create simple graphs in the xy plane. It gives the user complete of control of many aspects of the graph (eg, picture size, text font, line weight, math and Greek symbols, color palette specification). Color produces contour diagrams, with Contour producing a B/W equivalent. Magmap maps magnetic field components using spherical harmonic representations. PSD estimates the Power Spectral Density of a time series. Cross calculates frequency domain functions from a pair of input time series.

Maintained Software - Robert L. Parker
Over the years my colleagues and I have written a number of useful programs that are in wide use in research institutions. They are all written in Fortran, come with extensive documentation. Several packages are briefly described below, with links to online documentation. On this page you will find information about plotxy (in the next section), and also color magmap psd cross , and contour
Plotxy
The most venerable program is plotxy, originally written by Loren Shure and myself in the 1980s. This package allows the user, either interactively at the terminal, or though scripts, to create simple graphs in the x-y plane. These days there are dozens of such programs, but plotxy gives the user complete of control of many aspects of the graph (eg, picture size, text font, line weight, math and Greek symbols, color palette specification) often absent from the other systems. For example, matlab effortlessly generates simple graphics during the development stages of a project, but production of publication-quality figures is much more troublesome. Control of figure and text size, arrangement on the page, annotation is handled in matlab by a confusing combination of pull-down menus, and function calls, some requiring handle graphics, others not, and documentation is diffuse. In comparison, plotxy offers full control within a uniform framework, well documented in one place. The example above is a figure drawn with plotxy ( mapped to jpeg and somewhat degraded) from a recent paper of mine shows some features that would require considerable effort to reproduce in matlab. Note the different line weights, dash lengths and symbol sizes, the way in which the open circles cover the curved lines, and the graceful numerical axis annotation. The plotxy

Software Philosophy
Over the past few years, with the aid of faculty and students, we have been creating commercial level educational software for use in and out of the mathematics classroom. These programs can be used by instructors for classroom demonstrations as well as by students for exploration and solving problems. A major consideration in designing our software was to keep the number of (fumbling) keystrokes the instructor needs to make in front of the class to a minimum, particularly as far as entering numbers is concerned. Rather than create one massive comprehensive package that would take weeks of class time to learn, we decided to write many small packages. Each of these packages is designed to do one thing very well, and be used effectively with no, or minimal, training. In view of the fact that we teach about 8,500 students each semester, it is impossible for us to have a computer lab large enough to accommodate them all. However, there are many departmental and public labs on campus, and about 15% of our students have access to computers at home or through friends. To make use of these untapped resources, we decided that all the software we created could be copied for free without fear of legal reprisals. We encourage anyone to take copies of our software. All our packages contain the following statment:
This program may be freely distributed by any means, including bulletin boards, provided that there is no fee or charge or consideration of any kind which is in excess of $8. However, we retain all rights to this program.
