Every day, we are bombarded by numbers. The source of information using numbers is
frequently the news. Every day newspapers, magazines, TV and radio news, report news
stories which include numbers. Oftentimes, these numbers go by so fast, we don't have
time to stop and process them.
This new web resource, Math In The Media , will highlight specific stories found in the
media which use numbers. This site is designed to be used by middle school math teachers.
The goal is to get students interested in math using "real world examples;" things they can
relate to easily. At the same time, the topics addressed in the news stories are those which are regularly reported. Teachers can easily link to a news source and download the latest information, making the topic relevant and timely.

    OVERVIEW
This lesson includes an experiment for the science class and can be expanded through optional graphing activities to include math. The experiment uses an inclined plane and balls of various masses to determine the effect a large object has on a small object, as well as the effect of different velocities. This experiment can be done to illustrate momentum, kinetic energy, acceleration due to gravity and forces. SUGGESTED TIME ALLOWANCE
One or two 40-50 minute class periods (Data collected, graphs made, questions answered on day one; results discussed and optional video viewed on day two.)
    OBJECTIVES
    Students will be able to:
    • Analyze the effect of mass of an object on the distance it travels.
    • Analyze the effect of the height of the plane (velocity) on the distance it travels.
    • Describe how mass and velocity are interrelated.

    NCTM Position Statements on Technology
Computer technology is changing the ways we use mathematics; consequently, the content of mathematics programs and the methods by which mathematics is taught are changing. Students must continue to study appropriate mathematics, content, and they also must be able to recognize when and how to use computers effectively when doing mathematics ... Mathematics teacher should be able to appropriately use a variety of computer tools such as programming languages and spreadsheets in the mathematics classroom. For example, teacher should be able to identify topics for which expressing an algorithm as a computer program will deepen student insight, and they should be able to develop or modify programs to fit the needs of classes or individuals. Keeping pace with advances in technology will enable mathematics teachers to use the most efficient and effective tools available ... - The Use of Computers in the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics, NCTM, 1987

Teaching With Technology - McKendree College Education Division
Lesson Plans Developed by Preservice Teachers
From the Technology Resource Coordinator... The following lesson plans were developed by preservice teachers at McKendree College who have in the past 2 years or at the present time are participating in a Goals 2000 Preservice Grant. Factors to keep in mind:
    • All McKendree College students participating in this grant are volunteers. Their college background ranges from sophomores to seniors. They are enrolled in methods classes at McKendree College. Technical skills are novice to advanced. This is their first experience at development of an effective lesson plan that includes technology and components of engaged learning. Most lesson plans have not been classroom tested. Each student has earned a Certificate of Achievement by scoring at least 31 points on the evaluation rubric. Mentor teachers in the participating local school districts are volunteers and must have at least 3 years of classroom experience. The McKendree students and mentor teachers share common attributes: they want to learn more about technology and how to effectively integrate it into the classroom, are not afraid to take risks, and demonstrate characteristics of engaged learners.
