CSD # 2 PARENT QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS CUllED FROM PARENT SURVEY AND COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD 2 TESTIMONY K – 5 (school not identified) Why is it that my son comes home with no idea on how to go about solving the night’s math problem? I’ve also heard the same from other parents. Why is there not assigned intense practice of any given topic? Parents have no way of gauging the child’s progress. We need a math glossary/ vocabulary and a set of written strategies so parents can know the students are learning…The curriculum seems very fragmented May sound premature for a fifth grader’s parent, but as the world gets “smaller” how does TERC fit in with what other countries are using? Some school’s tests scores seem (unexpectedly) wildly different from some others that seem on the same “level” – why?
PS 6
I complained about the math programs to my children’s teachers, principals and math staff developers. Some acknowledge the shortcomings of TERC but say their hands are tied. What you are doing isn’t working !!! Why not give parents a choice between the progressive program and a more traditional one.

Burlington Times Teacher: Making math fun adds up By KIM BENN Burlington County Times LUMBERTON - For kindergarten teacher Kim Mueller, mathematics is about more than numbers. It is about having fun while learning. To make the subject more enjoyable for her students, Mueller has created take-home study aids and math centers in her classroom at the Florence L. Walther School. "I am someone who thinks everyone can do math and love it at the same time," she said. "I say that all kids and adults can love mathematics if mathematics is presented in an entertaining and creative manner." Mueller, 31, of Cinnaminson is using a $500 McDonald's Classroom Grant she received last month to create seven types of "MATH Bags." The acronym stands for Mueller's Activities Together at Home. She said she hopes to receive the grant money this month and begin using the bags by March. The bags will be filled with math literature, puppets, activities children can do with their parents and journals to record their experiences, Mueller said. Students will be able to take a bag home for a night, then take it back to school to exchange it for a different bag, she said.

Abstract
  • What are the characteristics of kindergarten education? How is kindergarten taught? What are the dilemmas faced by kindergarten teachers in relation to the new educational reform? Are current political changes influencing in any way what happens in the schools? In what ways?
Methods
A qualitative approach was used to explore issues and dilemmas faced by different stakeholders regarding the implementation of the new K-9 curriculum. The data were collected over an 8-week period. The data consisted of semi-structured and open-ended interviews, focus-group interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was organized around the main questions of the study (Stake, 1995). Participants were selected based on their willingness to collaborate in the study and their accessibility. The participants included the head of kindergarten education, school administrators, and kindergarten teachers. To validate our findings, we allowed participants to review the quotes and descriptions. We also used multiple data sources (observation, interviews, and document review).

Show Time
Picture 1
It seemed as if just about everyone in town was getting ready for the Pet Talent Show-everyone, that is , except for Emma the Bear. Harry was training his goldfish to dance on his tail. Jocko's little white mouse was learning to juggle peanuts. And, all day long, Zelda's canaries practiced chirping "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Emma felt left out. "I'm tired of sitting and watching everyone get ready for the talent show," Emma told her dog Sandy. "I wish we could be in the show too. There must be something we can do." Sandy barked in agreement. He picked up a hoop that was in the garage and brought it to Emma. Emma took the hoop and hugged Sandy."You're a smart dog!" she said. "I'll borrow some more hoops, and we'll put on a dog act. You'll be the star, Sandy. I know some tricks we can do. There's just one problem. We'll need some more dogs." Picture 2
Emma and Sandy went to see their neighbor Rodney. He was a magician. "Sandy and I want to do a dog act for the talent show," Emma told him. "Sandy will be the star. But one dog isn't enough. Do you know anyone who has some dogs we can use?"

Kids Snap Communities in Internet Project
For the Internet project Communities Around the World, kindergarten and first grade students from four states took pictures in their hometowns, created PowerPoint presentations about their communities, and used e-mail to share those presentations with one another. Included: How the Communities Around the World project worked.
Are you looking for an activity that will teach your students about their community and about other communities across the country? An Internet project developed by a Bronx (New York) technology teacher allowed students in four states to learn more about their own hometowns and to share what they learned with one another. In the project Communities Around the World, students in four kindergartens and one first grade took pictures of places of interest in their individual communities. Each class then selected the most representative photographs, wrote descriptions to accompany them, and incorporated both photos and text into a PowerPoint slide show. Finally, a copy of each slide show was e-mailed to the other participating schools.

"There is a mathematically correct solution"
This web site is devoted to the concerns raised by parents and scientists
about the invasion of our schools by the New-New Math
and the need to restore basic skills to math education. Mathematically Correct is the informal, nationwide organization that fights the Establishment
on behalf of sanity and quality in math education.
David Gelernter, NY Post Mathematics achievement in America is far below what we would like it to be. Recent " reform " efforts only aggravate the problem. As a result, our children have less and less exposure to rigorous, content-rich mathematics . The advocates of the new, fuzzy math have practiced their rhetoric well. They speak of higher-order thinking, conceptual understanding and solving problems, but they neglect the systematic mastery of the fundamental building blocks necessary for success in any of these areas. Their focus is on things like calculators, blocks, guesswork, and group activities and they shun things like algorithms and repeated practice. The new programs are shy on fundamentals and they also lack the mathematical depth and rigor that promotes greater achievement. Concerned parents are in a state of dismay and have begun efforts to restore content, rigor, and genuinely high expectations to mathematics education. This site provides relevant background and information for parents, teachers, board members and the public from around the country.
