My name is Patsy. I teach kindergarten at Park Orchard. I was born and raised on a wheat farm in eastern Washington. I attended a school that started in first grade so I never actually went to kindergarten myself. The school I attended was quite small. The first through fourth grades were in one classroom and the fifth through eighth grades were housed in another room , a regular two-room school house. This is my sixth year teaching at this grade level. I have previously taught third and fourth grades. I enjoy kindergarten because they are so honest. They will tell you when you are looking very tired or let you know if you sing off key. I will be working on a web page for Everyday Math for kindergarten level. I hope to help other kindergarten teachers discover resources and connect with each other on the web.
Hi! I am Melonee Maclachlan. I belong to a team of first grade teachers at Sawyer Woods Elementary. I am also the primary Everyday math mentor for my school. I was a biological science major in college, but that seems a long time ago. I am also a falconer, and because of my busy schedule, I often have a falcon or hawk with me. I have two children who went through the KPS system. My daughter is finishing an anthropology major at WWU and my son I would presently like to disown! Being totally committed to learning-by-doing, I'm very interested in perfecting the Everyday math Web Team member seems an exciting way to do two things I really like! :-)

It seemed as if just about everyone in town was getting ready for the Pet Talent Show-everyone, that is , except for Emma the Bear. Harry was training his goldfish to dance on his tail. Jocko's little white mouse was learning to juggle peanuts. And, all day long, Zelda's canaries practiced chirping "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Emma felt left out. "I'm tired of sitting and watching everyone get ready for the talent show," Emma told her dog Sandy. "I wish we could be in the show too. There must be something we can do." Sandy barked in agreement. He picked up a hoop that was in the garage and brought it to Emma. Emma took the hoop and hugged Sandy."You're a smart dog!" she said. "I'll borrow some more hoops, and we'll put on a dog act. You'll be the star, Sandy. I know some tricks we can do. There's just one problem. We'll need some more dogs."

KINDERGARTEN QUESTION/ANSWER OCTOBER 1, 2002
QUESTION
ANSWER
Why do some schools continue to have small K classes and others remain very large year after year? Families don’t move into school attendance areas in handy clumps of 20. Kindergarten is staffed at 20:1. We project the enrollment and staff based on that. Because kindergarten is on a unique schedule, we don’t often combine K/1, so large numbers or small numbers stand out and can’t easily be addressed. We do move kids and move teachers. It’s a hard thing to fix. Why are so many new teachers short lived in K? What is unappealing and keeps people away? A great question. We would be interested in your thoughts on this issue. Please feel free to contact Susan Zoller by phone or e-mail if you have thoughts. How can we work to get more conference/report card writing time for those with 2 sessions of Kindergarten? The Board has created a Parent-Teacher Conference Task Force that will meet for the first time in October 2002. The BEA has representatives on this task force.

Question: I am trying to find information on the teaching of patterns to kindergartners. I am researching the ideas and thoughts behind teaching patterns as well as how to go about teaching patterns. I have not had any luck on this topic... Can you please help me? Thank you. Answer: Patterns are so much fun to teach! For children to really understand patterns, they must know that a pattern does not exist until the unit repeats itself. Therefore, yellow-orange-green is not a pattern until the children see yellow-orange-green/yellow-orange-green/yellow-orange-green. There are two kinds of patterns that should be taught in kindergarten: repeating patterns and growing patterns. There is a fantastic book available from both NAEYC and NCTM titled The Young Child and Mathematics PBS has produced a series of videotapes in their Mathline series: Elementary School Math Project, Grades K - 5. The focus of the seventh tape in the series deals completely with patterns. It's a good tape with actual classrooms in kindergarten, first, second/third, and fourth grades.

    Kindergarten Team Leader
    Laura Dimmitt
    Introduction

"We're giving them their very first experience of school. If they enjoy kindergarten and feel successful and good about themselves, that's going to progress with them to the next grade level," says teacher Laura Dimmitt. And on through their whole lives. In a society that demands that people learn and grow throughout their lives in order to succeed, Laura helps kids love to learn.
Laura is a bilingual kindergarten teacher and team leader at a well-respected school in central Texas. She is in her fourth year of teaching and her love for the profession has only grown over time.
Since her school serves a largely immigrant and low socio-economic population, Laura often finds herself balancing the personal needs of her students (many of whom have unstable or inadequate home situations) with their academic needs. Sometimes it seems she has to be as much a social worker as a teacher as she deals with parents who have little positive experience with school themselves.
Nevertheless, she loves her work. The rewards, after all, are profound. How many people can say that every year they make a difference in the lives of more than twenty childrendifferences that will shape the adults those kids become? And the difference Laura makes is positive. The students that leave her class and go on to first grade know how to read and get along with others. They love learning and school.

Returning to LEAP for the third time. Dr. Joan Safran Hamilton Early childhood education specialist, Clackamas Education Service District, Portland, Ore. Joan Hamilton has become the LEAP lobbyist for early childhood education. Her job involves research with children who have communication delays. She specializes in developing new tools to measure progress in interpersonal relationships among children on the autism spectrum. For the workshop, she teaches teachers how to evaluate learning readiness of children who are not yet literate and may be approaching English as a second language. Joan H. has three children of her own but is most excited right now about the twin grandchildren expected in the fall. She says being in Liberia makes her feel "25 again." But with a difference. In 1965 she taught grades 2 and 4 and night school to grade 8 in Voinjama. In '66, she taught 3rd grade in Vezala. "In Peace Corps my relationships were with children. LEAP has offered an opportunity to know adults in Liberia and has deepened my knowledge and appreciation of the culture. I marvel at the teachers' ability to find joy in life amidst the struggle." She first went back in 1997 as an election monitor with Friends of Liberia.

What Should Be Learned In Kindergarten?
    Readiness For Kindergarten

The practice of kindergarten retention is increasing dramatically. In some districts, as many as 60% of kindergartners are judged to be unready for first grade. These children are provided with alternative programming: developmental kindergarten (followed by regular kindergarten), transition or pre-first grade, or the repeating of kindergarten. An extra year before first grade is intended to protect unready children from entering too soon into a demanding academic environment where, it is thought, they will almost surely experience failure. The extra year is meant to be a time when immature children can grow and develop learning readiness skills, and children with deficient prereading skills can strengthen them. When parents are asked to agree to retention or transition placement, they are often told that with an extra year to grow, their children will move to the top of their classes and become leaders. Advocates of kindergarten retention are undoubtedly well-intentioned. They see retention as a way for the school to respond to children's enormous differences in background, developmental stages, and aptitude. They view retention as a means of preventing failure before it occurs.

    Current Influences On the Curriculum
Few would argue that what is now taught and expected to be learned in many kindergartens is profoundly different from what it was two decades ago. The shift from play- and group adjustment-oriented settings to kindergarten classrooms characterized by direct teaching of discrete skills and specific expectations for achievement is being reinforced by recent calls for reform of public education (Elkind, 1986). Critics of the trend toward skill-based kindergartens are not advocating a return to outmoded educational practices of the past. However, much new research about children's learning confirms some historical beliefs about effective educational practices. Unfortunately, this well-known and respected body of research information is often ignored in the formulation of curriculum for today's kindergarten (Spodek, 1986).
