Everyday Mathematics embraces many of the traditional goals of school mathematics as well as two ambitious new goals:
  • To substantially raise expectations with respect to the amount and range of mathematics that children can learn. To provide materials for children and support for teachers that enable them to meet these higher expectations.
Based on their findings, the authors established several basic principles that have guided the development of an

The Jerusalem Post
Judy Siegel State Comptroller's Report An unfounded recommendation by a senior Education Ministry inspector for a computer system to teach kindergarten children math cost the state millions of shekels - but it benefited only the inspector, who based her doctoral thesis on it, and the Boston developer, who paid all her expenses for a week-long visit to the US. This was disclosed by the state comptroller in a section of the Education Ministry chapter of his report. The comptroller stated that the lesson of the case, which clearly violated rules of proper administration, is that new pedagogical materials should be introduced only if an independent, professional team finds it an educationally beneficial and financially worthwhile investment. At a time when the ministry wants to fire thousands of teachers and is cutting back teaching hours, the ministry was persuaded by Anat Sela, national inspector for preschool science and technology to purchase the hardware and software from the Boston professor who developed it. (Sela's name was not given in the report; as the comptroller's policy is to leave names out of his reports.)

"When I went to kindergarten 30-odd years ago, there weren't a lot of expectations about what we should or could learn," says Julie Ritzer Ross, a mother of two. "It was just this fun place where you went and played with blocks, did organized crafts, and ate paste. Now that so many children go to preschool, I knew my son Max would probably be doing more in kindergarten than I did. But I was still amazed by how much more he actually did." "Among other things," says Ross, "my son's kindergarten class learned about French Impressionist painters and tried their hands at painting in the style of Monet. They also learned how to write and illustrate their own books; count to 150 by ones, twos, and tens; and weigh, measure, and estimate."

Using Technology with Kindergarten Students A kindergarten teacher shares best practice examples of exciting activities she does using technology to enhance learning in her kindergarten classroom.
By Chris Gathers
have been teaching kindergarten for 30 years. I have taught all day every day kindergarten since 1989. I teach in a small Kansas town where the school district covers 400 square miles and the students come from diverse backgrounds. My elementary school has approximately 375 students in grades K-5 with three classes for each grade level. It is operated on a six day schedule to accommodate special classes for each classroom.
Technology is one of the biggest and most exciting changes I have seen during my teaching career. In my classroom there are three Macintosh computers for student and teacher use. My students also have access to a lab equipped with 25 Macintosh computers. A knowledgeable paraprofessional staffs the lab. I teach my own lessons when my students are using this facility. Each lesson is 30 to 45 minutes long. Sometimes the lessons I teach take several sessions to master and sometimes they don't. It all depends on the group of children.
Check out all of the Standards applicable to this story!

CWRU math fellows will help Cleveland teachers with new math lessons
What do potato peels or reflecting mirrors have to do with graduate-level mathematical concepts? Four National Science Foundation math fellows at Case Western Reserve University will use vegetables and other household objects to help Cleveland high school and middle school teachers discover the amazing world of mathematics by manipulating objects in a new graduate course, "Mathematics and the Imagination." "It's unheard of to use manipulatives in a graduate-level course," said math fellow Brendan Foreman. The fellows spend half of their time in mathematical research at CWRU and the other half working at Collinwood and East Technical High Schools, as well as many other sites in the Cleveland Public Schools. The fellows lend their expertise to Cleveland school teachers through the Cleveland Collaborative for Math Education of the Cleveland Education Fund. The math fellows Foreman, Ben Ford, Naomi Klarreich, and Alina Stancu along with David Singer, professor of mathematics at CWRU, plan to make the graduate-level math course accessible to teachers.
