Online Math Applications
We designed our web page to meet three educational objectives: To apply math to real-life situations; To make math interesting and stimulating; To share interactive math experiences over the Internet. We show that math is part of our daily life by applying it to driving a car, listening to music, using a computer and saving and investing for college funds. The mathematical concepts in each of our topics are defined with simple equations at elementary and junior high math levels. When students realize that they can use simple math to understand and solve problems relevant to their lives, they will discover that math is stimulating. We take away fear of learning math by using simple equations for complicated real-life application. We ask users to submit a quiz to share in the hope of stimulating their imagination in the real world. As more users submit their quizzes, we will build up a database of interesting real-world math applications Visit Site 1998 ThinkQuest USA Awards First Place Want to build a ThinkQuest site?

Gears and Levers are fascinating and create very clean physical forms for many basic mathematical concepts. Ratios and fractions are equivalent to the size (teeth) of gears and weights and distances on levers. The idea of the equals sign translates literally to the fulcrum of the lever where the balance condition is that the product of weight times distance must be the same on both sides.
The geometry of the circle is realized in the Gear itself with concrete identification of degrees radians radius diameter , etc. The Activities are structured so students need to develop mathematical skills to explain what they find, rather than having to go out and find made-up examples for mathematical ideas. This is much more the way the real world works, we rarely find mathematical problems exactly as they appear in texts. Rather, we need to learn to apply mathematical skills to solve the problems we DO find , in all their wondrous complexity.

The Car and Ramp is probably the best starting place for teaching ideas
from graphing and algebra right up through pre-calculus and calculus itself. Newton developed the calculus (simultaneous with Leibnitz) from very similar experiments on motion. The functions of squares and square roots are used
as well as linear and quadratic equations . The relationship between the graphical and algebraic representation of a straight line is especially valuable. Problem Solving Most of the activities teach students how to arrange observations into graphical and/or algebraic models that can be used to solve problems of predicting
what will happen next. Predictions are accurate to within 1% demonstrating
that mathematics really works in the real world. Real Numbers and Operations Starting with distance and time students work with decimal computations and many calculator (or graphing calculator/spreadsheet) computations.

Click on the following links (or scroll down the page) to find the Table of Contents for each section.
i-Maths are online, interactive, multimedia math investigations. All i-Maths are built around interactive math applets, and some also include video clips. There are two lengths of i-Maths: single-day and multi-day, as identified below. Complete i-Maths include student investigations, teacher notes, and answers. Some of the multi-day i-Maths also include video clips of teachers and students using the investigation, sample student work, assessment tasks, and related professional development activities. Student i-Maths contain just the student investigations. They are ready to use by students. e-Math Investigations are selected E-examples from the electronic version of NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics . Each E-example consists of an interactive math applet, suggestions for student activities, and some discussion for teachers. These investigations can be identified by the icon to the right.

    93. Plano ISD - Connected Math Disconnected From Real World

    http://www.pisd.org/cmp/cmpteacher.html
From a Concerned Teacher This letter is to Plano parents of elementary and middle school-aged children. Its purpose is to make you aware of a math program for 6th-8th grades that the head of secondary math, Jim Wohlgehagen, is trying to implement beginning the 1999-2000 school year. This program is called "Connected Mathematics". In a nutshell, this program is "discovery" learning. The students "discover" the concepts in each unit through a variety of activities. The program sounds like a great idea in theory. The goal is to have students make sense of the mathematics they study and to be able to communicate their reasoning clearly. The teacher begins the unit by presenting the 'problem" to the students. The kids then work in pairs or small groups to solve the problem by gathering data, sharing ideas, looking for patterns, making conjectures, or developing other types of problem solving strategies. When most of the students have made sufficient progress toward solving the problem, the teacher helps the class to discuss ways they found to organize the data and look for patterns and related rules in the data. Below are concerns which every parent should consider.

What are some activities I can use for a Pi Day celebration on March 14 (3.14)?
How many celebrations are there in your math class? Each year on March 14th many classrooms break from their usual routines to observe the festivities of "Pi [ ] Day" because the digits in this date correspond with the first three digits of
Teachers use this date to engage students in activities related to the history and concept of . Students are often familiar with before this day and the projects and activities associated with Pi Day are meant to enrich and deepen the students' understanding of the concept. Activities may include investigations of the value of by approximating the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. Students may also share their own Pi Projects with their classmates. Some teachers choose to end their Pi Day celebration by eating pie!

    1. Cut out small objects on Ellison using fun foam - or use erasers from Oriental etc. Include a laminated strip of paper about 3 inches in width and an egg carton. Students make patterns or sort the objects.
    2. Write numbers on stickers (round price stickers for garage sales work well) and glue into the bottom of egg cartons. Place a bag with small objects with the carton. Students can read number and count that many objects into egg cups.
    3. Playdough, Mat, spinner. Write target numbers on spinner - many great spinners in most math books. Student spins a number: eg student spins 3 - student makes three balls out of the playdough and then creates a number 3 with it. You may include a large template for making the number.
