i-Maths are online, interactive, multimedia math investigations. All i-Maths are built around interactive math applets, and some also include video clips. There are two lengths of i-Maths: single-day and multi-day, as identified below. Complete i-Maths include student investigations, teacher notes, and answers. Some of the multi-day i-Maths also include video clips of teachers and students using the investigation, sample student work, assessment tasks, and related professional development activities. Student i-Maths contain just the student investigations. They are ready to use by students. e-Math Investigations are selected E-examples from the electronic version of NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics . Each E-example consists of an interactive math applet, suggestions for student activities, and some discussion for teachers. These investigations can be identified by the icon to the right.

Children's Software Review: Math Missions Grades 3-5: The Amazing Arcade Adventure (Scholastic) Related Links The cartoon city of Spectacle City, founded by Horton Spectacle, was destined to be the greatest city on Earth, but Randall Underling is determined to see it fail. Not only that, the store clerks need help with math. Players step in to help the clerks run their shops, drawing on real-world math skills as they do. This program is outstanding. It keeps children busy, has a clear goal to work towards, and features clever activities that are mostly fun to complete. As children participate in the activities, they earn money. Once they've earned enough money and achieved a set game ranking, they can open up the city's arcade. Not only do children get to play the arcade games as a reward, they actually become owners of the arcade and make business decisions about what games to buy for the arcade, buy ads, and track sales! This business simulation is a fun and educational reward. Of course, children will want to earn more money to keep the arcade alive and thriving, and they need only return to the program's activities in the stores in order to do so. At sign-in, children choose a difficulty level. There are three levels, designed to correspond to third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade curriculum. The program is probably best for children entering fourth or fifth grade because, as with the Math Missions Grades K-2 program, the math activities are somewhat advanced.

5th Grade Math Home Teacher Resources Notes Real Life Activities: Overview of the Lesson
Introduction
  • Real-life activities used in the classroom expose children to math in their everyday world.

Review Previous Work
  • Using picture books helps students see how math is used every day. Students used math journals to discuss math topics they had learned previously. The concepts they discussed included fractions, layering and measuring.

Group Work
  • Using a recipe is one way to use math in a real-life context. Adjusting recipes allows students to work with fractions. Fractions can also be discussed when cutting a cake.

Solving Problems with Students
  • As students work together in small groups teachers can observe difficulties that students have. Individual problems can be solved one-on-one. Problems that many students have can be addressed in whole class discussions.

Fractions: A Mini-Lesson
  • One group tried to solve the following multiplication problem: 2/3 x 4 As a whole class the problem was discussed and strategies were shared.

Project Overview
See below for Resources The SELECT Math Project will provide professional development activities and materials to enable teachers to effectively integrate technology into mathematics teaching and learning in middle level classrooms throughout Boston. This professional development model will provide ongoing, embedded support to teachers through face-to face workshops and courses, exchanges with colleagues, and mentoring through the use of the BPS Secondary Mathematics Department and Office of Instructional Technology staff.
Goals
This project will enable participants to:
  • develop and expand the participants' knowledge of sophisticated tools designed to deepen mathematical understanding (e.g., Geometer's Sketchpad, Tabletop, Fathom, Mathlab, and applets such as those available from NCTM at http://illuminations.nctm.org/index2.html

    Math Activities for K-12 Teachers
In December, 1997, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center funded Dan Biezad, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, and Robin Ward, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, both of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, to develop materials for K-12 teachers based on aeronautical themes and NASA projects. One major goal of this project was to make the learning of mathematics more engaging and realistic for students, by using real-world applications.

The program teaches and reinforces algebra concepts by combining lessons developed with real world examples, along with applications, such as gears, Fibonacci numbers, exploring number patterns in flowers, spirals, and music. Carmen Sandiego: Math Detective Computations, fractions, decimals, and math problem solving strategies used as students try to find Carmen. Comparing with Ratio Students learn that ratio is a way to compare amounts by using multiplication and division. Through five activities, students recognize and describe ratios, develop proportional thinking skills, estimate ratios, determine equivalent ratios, and use ratios to analyze data.
Dive into Math 2 Incorporates a combination of tutorial, discovery, drill, and practice learning strategies and techniques. Remedial and enrichment activities are integral components of the program. Addition, subtraction, geometry, patterns. Factory Deluxe Students think strategically as they design, build, and ship products off assembly lines. Students explore shapes, rotation, angle measurement, shape attributes, and geometry formulas.
