Activity 22 Activity 21 Activity 21 Activity 23 ... Activity 03 Carol Kaplan-Lyss Parenting Educator, Clayton Schools' Family Center writes "Professor Tobbs" (Thomas C. O'Brien, Ph.D) offers parents and children a real gift! His activity ideas for parent and child together seem so simple and "everyday" but they are based in his keen understanding of the relationship between child development and the building of mathematical concepts. Parents, just in reading Professor Tobbs' suggested activities, will recognize how simple family functions can help children build mathematical understanding. Who would have thought, for instance, that the simple task of setting the table provides tremendous opportunity for children to learn a number of basic mathematical concepts?! Professor Tobbs' activities are simple and fun. His format is easy to understand. and the materials required are probably right inside your kitchen cupboard! Best of all, he opens parents eyes to the concepts that children are developing at certain stages, and how a parent's "intentional" interaction helps learning to happen.

How to raise a child who loves math

Kindergarten to 1st grade
by Holly Hanke Here are seven activities you can do at home to instill a love of math: What's below: Be positive Use math every day Broaden the boundaries of math Ask questions ... Play math games around the house Be positive
Don't let your own struggles with math influence how you introduce the world of numbers to your child. Since you were in school, our understanding of how to teach math has been completely overhauled; for example, teachers now emphasize making the connection between real world activities and math concepts. Children understand that math helps them develop good problem-solving skills. To them, learning math is actually fun. Use math every day
Let your child see how important math skills are in your daily life and how frequently you use them. Ask for his help when you pay bills, measure a room for a new piece of furniture, or measure out ingredients for a recipe. Point out to him how doctors, pharmacists, builders, and astronauts all use math in their jobs. Each of these activities reinforces how useful math skills are in life. Broaden the boundaries of math
Math isn't just about numbers. It's also about:

Exploring Characteristics of Triangles Students draw triangles and explore the classification of each using the measures of interior angles and lengths of sides. In the extension activities, the students further explore and generalize a formula for the sum of the interior angles of convex polygons.
Constructions of Isosceles and Equilateral Triangles
Students discuss the difference between drawing and constructing a triangle using The Geometer's Sketchpad. They will further develop constructions for both isosceles and equilateral triangles. In the extension activities, students will script the construction of a right triangle.
The Pythagorean Theorem
Students create both a visual and formal proof of the Pythagorean theorem, as well as view four additional geometric demonstrations of the theorem. These demonstrations are based on proofs by Bhaskara, Leonardo da Vinci, and Euclid. Students will value this activity more if they have already had some experience with the Pythagorean Theorem.

The Real World: Test it out.
July 18-24, 2004 GEMS is sponsored by a grant from the Intel Foundation.
The Program
Simply put, engineering is solving problems using math and science. Engineers make artificial organs and limbs; create robots to carry out tasks too dangerous for humans; devise ways to treat waste to keep it from polluting the environment; produce materials that are flame resistant; and improve the design of tools and toys we use every day. It's impossible to go through a single day without using something an engineer has helped to create. GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) is a hands-on exploration of engineering, math and science for young women. You will be able to learn more about potential careers in these areas by engaging in labs facilitated by a dedicated team of WPI faculty and students. Although labs change every year to accommodate repeat participants, in the past they have included comparing the quality of water from various sources and testing different techniques for making it potable, building a robot that responds to sound, and learning about the process of making artificial skin. In addition to labs, participants work in teams on a week-long engineering design project. Last year the project involved using a wheelchair to determine what tasks are difficult for a disabled person to accomplish. The teams then each redesigned their chair and presented the results, using CAD drawings, to an audience of their peers. This year's project will focus on a different aspect of how engineering helps people.

Using Real-World Data Visit the Math Article Archive for more math-related content. Helping students understand and appreciate the value of mathematics is an important part of what teachers do. One means of accomplishing this goal is to provide students with mathematically meaningful activities that involve or grow out of real world situations. The Mathematics Teacher journal (a publication of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) helps provide resources of this type by publishing each month a Media Clips section. Media Clips include brief news clippings or ads with stories that involve mathematics. For example, in the February 2000 issue (page 120) a clipping from the St. Paul Pioneer Press featured a story concerning how the Federal Comunications Commission (FCC) is seeking ways to limit the profusion of telephone area codes. Accompanying this story were a series of questions addressing the mathematics that was embedded in this news report: what types of numerals are used for area codes, how many possibilities are there, and a mathematical error in the article. In the same section in the April 2000 issue, a brief graph concerning the world’s population reaching 6 billion from the USA TODAY newspaper was featured. A series of questions related to the graph are presented. Whether you use the Media Clips section or just keep your eyes (and mind) open to things you see everyday, the world is full interesting ideas to bring into your math class.

Baseball also involves lots of special vocabulary, and some fascinating physics. TeachersFirst has collected samples of Baseball-related lessons from around the Web. We'll add to this collection as suitable new material becomes available. Enjoy! Education-business partnerships promote practical skills and creativity in mathematics and science classrooms.
by Helen C. Mao High school teachers apply guitar-manufacturing concepts to classroom lessons. A middle school student and his classmates invent a new way of carrying books. Engineers work with elementary and middle school students to design, build, and market toys. Although these images may seem unconventional, they are growing more common as increasing numbers of businesses are becoming involved in mathematics and science education reform.
A Call for Basic Skills
The formation of education-business partnerships is one result of Goals 2000. These partnerships not only help cultivate real-world mathematics and science skills in the classroom, but also teach students how to apply these skills to their everyday lives.
Learning through Invention
One such education-business partnership is the FutureMakers Inventor/Mentor Program . Developed with the Business-Education Compact of Portland, Oregon, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the program helps Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington middle school teachers and their students work with business partners to create inventions that solve problems in the workplace. Aligned with national and Oregon state education standards in science, mathematics, art, social studies, and language arts, FutureMakers aims to show students how mathematics and science concepts underlie product development and invention.
