Get Real: Math in Everyday Life
How many times have your students asked "When are we ever going to use this in real life?" You'll find the answer here! Through the years, and probably through the centuries, teachers have struggled to make math meaningful by providing students with problems and examples demonstrating its applications in everyday life. As this classic joke shows, some strategies are more successful and more meaningful than others! Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? Teaching Math in 1960: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set "M" of money. The cardinality of set "M" is $100. Each element is worth $1. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set "C," the cost of production, contains 20 fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M" and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the set "P" for profits?

Using a simple vector analysis routine and the PORTS wind and current data, a trajectory for the spill was calculated using wind direction as a cardinal direction, wind speed in knots, current direction in degrees true, and current speed in meters per second. At each hour, speed and direction for the oil movement were computed based on these data using a generic Minerals Management Service algorithm. Topic: Data Management - "Math in the Real World" Grade Level : Grade 7 Time: 15 -20 hours This Module was created to integrate technology into the Saskatchewan Mathematics 6-9 Curriculum: A Curriculum Guide for the Middle Level (Grades 6-9) (September 1996). This module and the activities were created by Bart Cote. The Mathematics Module is designed to be teacher directed, with fully developed ready to use student activities. It was designed to give a teacher the opportunity to incorporate these activities into the Data Management unit in his/her classroom. The module activities cover all of the objectives in the topics of Collecting, Organizing, Displaying, Summarizing and Interpreting, from the Data Management Strand. However, it is important to note that this module does not include any of the objectives from the Probability topic. The fully developed student activities will lead the student in collecting, organizing, displaying, summarizing and interpreting data that he/she will collect on a topic of his/her choice. This module provides an excellent opportunity for students to see how Data Management is used in everyday situations. See the teacher pages to find out more about the activities.

Computer technology is changing the ways we use mathematics; consequently, the content of mathematics programs and the methods by which mathematics is taught are changing. Students must continue to study appropriate mathematics, content, and they also must be able to recognize when and how to use computers effectively when doing mathematics ... Mathematics teacher should be able to appropriately use a variety of computer tools such as programming languages and spreadsheets in the mathematics classroom. For example, teacher should be able to identify topics for which expressing an algorithm as a computer program will deepen student insight, and they should be able to develop or modify programs to fit the needs of classes or individuals. Is the Game Mathematical?
Math for the Real World presents a wide variety of real-life problems you could encounter as you tour the country with your band, such as creating schedules for sharing the driving, figuring out the perimeter of a poster in order to get it framed, or calculating the time it will take you to get from one place to another. Most of these are presented as word or story problems. The game provides a calculator and a handbook you can click on for hints (such as how many ounces are in a cup) or occasionally an actual strategy for solving the problem (such as "take the total number of hours and divide by 24"). The problems vary widely in terms of level of difficulty or complexity, from the fairly simple task of making a phone call by dialing and then depositing the right amount of change in a telephone to the more complicated task of loading all six band members and their gear onto the ferry in groups weighing no more than a specified weight, in the least number of trips possible. In addition, the problems become more complex as you enjoy success with the mathematics, moving from one-step to multi-step problems, or introducing more difficult concepts, such as decimal numbers. Correct answers result in more money in the bank to make your music video. If you answer incorrectly, you get a second chance. Wrong again? This time you lose money from your bank, and you don't learn what it is you did wrong, or how you might have done it right.

    KidSource OnLine Review
    Summary
If your preteen questions the relevance of learning math in school, then this title will help them understand the myriad of ways that math skills are needed. The main characters travel across the U.S. doing math problems to earn money to finance their trip and their goal is to create a great music video in the process of their adventures. Each math problem relates to their trip such as buying food or map/graph reading. There is a lot of 'hip' talk that many preteens will enjoy. So if you need a 'hook' to get your preteen to enhance his/her math skills and this setting is of interest to them, then try out this title.
    Educational
    Value
This title covers a wide variety of math areas (see list below). Each question covers a defined skill and many questions will challenge the average preteen. However, the format is very repetitive and the child will not have much control over the sequence of events or in changing the difficulty level of the problems. The hidden gem of this title is the reference area which will help the child learn how to solve the problem.
    Fun Factor
If your preteen is interested in music videos and 'road trips' then they'll be interested in the basic premise of this game. This angle can hold their attention while they do a variety of math activities.
