The goal of the University of Dayton student chapter of Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) is to provide an organization for students in the materials and processing related fields to exchange ideas and interact with the professional field. The UD chapter of SAMPE coordinates facilities tours of local industries and organizes a seminar series featuring speakers in the materials and process engineering fields. Because material and process fields consist of so many different aspects of engineering, students from all departments are invited to become members and participate in activities held by the organization. Membership in SAMPE includes a subscription to SAMPE Journal, a bi-monthly publication that includes technical articles, industry and international technical news, product and new literature announcements, book reviews, technical events calendars, and local SAMPE information. To obtain a registration form online, visit SAMPE For more information on SAMPE, contact student chapter president Amanda Smith at

Field and research The department has studied common principles and fundamental principles that induced from structures and properties of materials, ¡°the nature of materials science.¡± The department is also instructing and researching the basics and applications of core technologies that will lead the 21st century, so called 5Ts- information technology (IT), nanotechnology (NT), biotechnology (BT), environment technology (ET), and space technology (ST). In order to achieve such core research goals, the department¡¯s curricula are divided into four categories. First category is about core courses that educate basic properties of materials including crystal structures, defect structures, electron structures, thermodynamics, phase transformation, interface properties, mechanical properties and electromagnetic properties. Second category focuses on specialized courses about synthesis and fabrication processes, production and manufacturing processes of materials consisting of experiments of materials science and engineering, design and fabrication of materials, and semiconductor process. T he third category is related to microstructures and defect analysis that are commonly required for studying principles and phenomena including diffraction phenomena, optics and electro microscopes, micro-chemical analysis, and nanometer scale surface analysis. Fourth, the new courses are offered to educate basic and applied technologies on 5Ts that will lead the 21st century including nano materials technologies, and nano materials and process simulation, biomaterials, polymers, and electronic components and systems.

A 2-day short course
Department of Materials Science, McMaster University
June 24 and 25, 2004 Instructors:
Prof. Mike Ashby, FRS, University of Cambridge, England; Prof. Yves Brechet, INPG Grenoble, France and Dr. Hugh Shercliff, University of Cambridge, England Introduction This two-day course is designed to present recent advances in methods for materials and process selection. Day 2 is devoted to industrial and research problems, some solved, some still under study. Delegates will be asked to formulate an example of the kind of problems they have encountered in dealing with material and process information, and the course team will explore how far current tools are able to solve a selection of them. Advanced process selection, knowledge-based systems and other developments in education and training in materials and design will be discussed. The courses are a unique opportunity for you to meet leaders and fellow enthusiasts in the field of materials and manufacturing education.

  • 1. Opportunities
There has long been the dream that theory (quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, and statistical mechanics) properly incorporated into computer software could be used to design new drugs, new catalysts, new chemicals, and new materials. The pursuit of this dream has led to sufficient advances in quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics (collectively referred to as atomistic simulations ) that there are enormous potential opportunities for application to numerous important industrial problems involving the materials sciences, biotechnology, and chemical technology. This opportunity is to design, characterize, and optimize materials

Current progress in science and technology has led to the development of specific functional materials such as fine ceramics, rare earth magnets and semiconductors. On the other hand, major improvements are still required in the processing of base materials (steel, copper, aluminum and cement) to minimize environmental effects and energy consumption. In the view of the environmental protection, there is a strong need of developing advanced circulating (regeneration) technology for the production and utilization of these materials. Specially the following tasks will be implemented:
Seek the concepts and apply the principles to develop new circulating utilization processes to regenerate high quality materials with a lower environmental load. Provide new fundamental and basic unit technologies for incorporation into energy efficient advanced materials processes.
