http://www.iror.org/enrollment.asp
Home Administration Assessment Curriculum ... Links Reading Student Enrollment Over the past 6 years, Reading student enrollment numbers (projections and actuals) have been used and manipulated by school administration and special interest groups to reflect a need that does not exist. The most accurate, enduring projections were done in 1997 by Drummey, Rosane and Anderson (DRA) as part of the first Reading Memorial High School (RMHS) feasibility study . However, ensuing studies by Massachusetts Institute for Social and Economic Research (MISER) and New England School Development Council ( NESDEC ) and "tweaked" numbers by Earl R. Flansburgh (then ERF&A, now FAI Flansburgh Associates, Inc.) continue to be used (and misused) by school administration, depending upon the issue, audience and impact desired. October 21, 2002 student enrollment projections (available at the Nov. 4, 2002 Reading School Committee meeting) reflect a continued reduction in original projections . Yet, these most recent 10/21/02 projections were not sent to School Building Assistance (SBA) as part of the Dec. 1, 2002 high school project and were not included in the Jan. 13, 2003 Special Town Meeting documentation for school projects

BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT

Lowell, Massachusetts September 28, 1999
Thank you very much, Jan [Paschal] for that kind introduction, and for your efforts in coordinating these Back to School events all over New England. And I want to thank Mayor [Eileen] Donoghue and her staff for coordinating this wonderful event. Thanks as well to Superintendent [George] Tsapatsaris for arranging the involvement of the Lowell school system in today's celebration. I also want to thank Wilson Goode, the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, for being here. In addition, we have Ed Jerome, the Principal of Edgartown Elementary School with us - Edgartown Elementary is probably most famous for being the media center for President Clinton's vacations to Martha's Vineyard - no small task, I can assure you. Ed is also the Chair of the Massachusetts America Goes Back to School Committee, so thank you Ed for being here, and for all your hard work on these events. Lowell is a city with a long history of accomplishment, and - as this event demonstrates - clearly one that cares about its children and is dedicated to improving their education. Not only is this an All American city, Lowell was one of the leaders of America's Industrial Revolution, with its network of canals and textile mills helping to clothe our nation for over a century.

Matthew Wilson (617) 747-4389 Boston - Toxics Action Center released the winners of its 6th Annual Dirty Dozen Awards, "honoring" twelve of the Commonwealth's top environmental and public health threats. This year's awards include Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound for its objection to a wind energy project on the Cape, and Boudreau Boat Yard in East Boston for it 16 years of being a source of pollution to the Chelsea River. "While many polluters pose a threat to the Commonwealth, this year's winners deserve special recognition for the dangers they pose to the environment and their neighbors," said Katie Mae Simpson, a spokesperson for Toxics Action Center. "This is one holiday list you don't want to be on." A committee of environmental professionals, public health experts, and worker health and safety advocates chose the awards, selected from nominations made by residents across the state. The recipients were selected based on the severity of the threat they pose and the unwillingness of the polluters and government officials to adequately address the situation.

SISTER LIBRARIES:
A WHITE HOUSE MILLENNIUM COUNCIL PROJECT
The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and Sister Cities International have embarked on a major initiative, Sister Libraries: A White House Millennium Council Project. The initial goal is for public and school libraries in the United States to pair with others worldwide, focusing on programs specifically planned for children and teenagers. Participating libraries, such as the ones listed here, receive recognition and designation as official White House Millennium Council Sister Libraries, but the project does not provide funds for staff, equipment or materials. Many Sister Libraries are in locations that are already affiliated through Sister Cities International, an organization for sister city, county and state programs in the United States. SCI is the official agency that links communities from the United States with communities worldwide. The Sister Library programs will do much to encourage multicultural exchange and broaden international understanding enabling young people to appreciate more fully their own place in, and impact on, the world of today and tomorrow! Networking/Outreach
The CFM is committed to measured efforts, within our capacity and interests, to bring the potential healing and transformative power of mindfulness to a range of people and institutions extending beyond the traditional scope of medicine and health care. For example, we have collaborated with businesses and law firms; governmental agencies and professional organizations; elementary and secondary school teachers; collegiate, Olympic, and professional sports teams; and the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, to bring mindfulness into new areas where it may play an important catalytic role in reducing stress, deepening the soul life of its practitioners, and enhancing education, human performance, quality of life, and organizational clarity and effectiveness. To address the needs of the business community, public sector institutions, and non-profit organizations, we have developed a range of workshops, courses, and retreats entitled The Power of Mindfulness in the Workplace.

Free Asthma Program for Schools

The Starbright Foundation is offering a free asthma program to schools. The program consists of the Starbright Asthma CD-ROM Game: Quest for the Code and corresponding Implementation Guide that offers tips for using the program as part of a coordinated school health program.
Quest for the Code is an educational CD-ROM program in English and Spanish that uses an engaging storyline, high-end gaming technology and the talent of eleven top celebrities to capture kids attention while helping them learn key asthma management concepts. An interdisciplinary team, led by Dr. Gary Rachelefsky, helped shape the program's educational content. The program was developed for children and teens ages 7 to 15. Quest for the Code begins with an animated tour of the lungs that uses 3D graphics and animation to depict how asthma and asthma medications affect the lungs.
The program also includes information about:
  • Identifying and avoiding asthma triggers in different environments
  • Distinguishing between the early warning signs of asthma and asthma symptoms and what actions to take for each.
