About The Library...
The Library Media Services Department at Greater Lowell Tech contains one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in a technical secondary school in the country. It provides students with a wide variety of resources that are integrated into the curriculum and learning activities to help them become lifelong learners and discriminating users of information. There are four library/media centers at Greater Lowell Tech. The main one, the IMC (Instructional Media Center) is located on the third floor in the center of the building. Each of the three satellite media centers, SMCs, are located in a technical cluster. They are the Business/Graphics SMC, Construction/Automotive SMC, and the Personal Services/Health SMC. They hold print material for technical areas of instruction, as well as video carrels and computers, each connected system wide to a main source. The IMC contains material for the school's academic areas of study, as well as, general reference material and current periodicals. Additionally this area houses the Television Studio, Media Retrieval Center (which sends video programs out school wide), the Computer Resource Center, and the Media Preparation Room (photography, laminating, transparencies, cataloging of materials, etc.). The Media Center is a member of the Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System

    • The census of all Minnesota school library media center programs followed MEMO's development of the Standards for Effective School Library Media Programs in May 2000. The Standards provide the best practices for Minnesota school library media programs and help library media specialists take a look at how their programs are doing. The census was funded with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funda The study assessed where school media programs stand in relation to the standards; assisted in explaining the many roles that school library media programs play in student success; and, provided a basis for advocay for the role of school library media programs.

The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement. ERIC Digest.
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
    METHODOLOGY
Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.
