Our classes consisted of learning from the Baltimore Catechism by rote...memorizing questions and the answers to them, and being able to spew them out the following week at CCD. I always studied my lesson and was a good spewer so I received a lot of little holy pictures (They were given by the nun each week if you knew your lessons.) You see my experiences were really quite good. I didn't have any Sister Hitlers in my life. I have spoken with Maman, who attended parochial school in Lille, as well as Mount Mercy Academy in Waterville. She said that most of the nuns were very nice. They were extremely strict (which is not news to anyone who knew nuns), but mostly they were fair and that she felt she received a good education. She remembers one of the nuns (who must have been quite young) would play ball or games with the children on the playground. That didn't last long because an older nun made her stop. Maman heard that the nun was told it wasn't dignified or appropriate and that she would lose respect. What a shame and loss for the children as well as the nun.

It is rare for him to be able to speak directly to the citizens. Whether you agree with him or not, he will certainly make you think. Mass. News: Is public education finished in Massachusetts? Silber: No. I believe the ideal structure is a system of public education. The purpose of vouchers and the purpose of charter schools should be to create competition that will result in the improvement of the public schools. Vouchers could offer the opportunity of giving children the choice of attending private schools or parochial schools. That’s very unlikely in the state of Massachusetts, though not in other states, because of our constitutional prohibitions against the mixture of church and state. Those barriers are so high in Massachusetts that it will be difficult to work that out. The other difficulty with vouchers is that there are limited numbers of schools to which children can go. If they go to a private schoolI mean a non-religious private schoolor to a school in a different community, how are they going to get there? There’s no public busing that’s going to pick them up and take them there. So the children who will be beneficiaries of such a program are children whose parents are better off than the other parents. So it’s the most privileged children who are going to be further privileged by most voucher programs. That’s why I don’t see the voucher program as a success except as it creates competition. And to the extent that we can create competition, to put the standard public schools on notice that they have to improve or they’re going to be in jeopardy, that’s fine.

Now in its seventh decade, this play competition is open to every public, private, and parochial high school in the Commonwealth. Through participation in Festival, students with interests in acting, directing, and technical theatre gain valuable performance and production experience. * In the past fifteen years, membership in the Guild has grown from 65 to 113 schools. * In the past ten years, 235 different high schools have participated in the Drama Festival. * In 2003, more than 2,900 students from 102 schools participated in the Drama Festival. * 2003 marked the 49th anniversary of the Boston Globe's sponsorship of MHSDG, and more than 2,075 people attended the 2003 Boston Globe State Festival. * In 2003, 291 students from 14 schools and 29 middle and high school teachers participated in full-day drama workshops.
