"Making Schools Safe" Means "Refashioning Values" in Massachusetts
The following is a transcript of an audiotape, "The Homosexual Agenda in Massachusetts Schools," courtesy of Parents' Rights Coalition, P.O. Box 175, Newton, Mass. The two speakers on this portion of the tape are Michael Chuisano and Brian Camenker, the parents' rights activist who was interviewed in our last Bulletin issue. The two men describe school programs which devalue sexual self-restraint, tradition, and the authority of adults mentors in the teenager's life in favor of an inner-directed decision-making process. At the same time, most such programs encourage children to test out a broad range of sexual options, and to base their judgments about those options on a combination of health considerations and personal feelings. Such programs are typically introduced as essential for making schools safe. (To order copies of this tape, which also feature ex-gay Anthony Falzarano and researcher Brian Burt, call 781-433-7106.)

Harvard to allow military recruiters
ADVERTISEMENT Harvard University will not challenge a federal rule pressing schools to allow military recruiters on campuses that oppose the military's policy toward gays and lesbians. Harvard's president, Lawrence H. Summers, wrote in a letter last week to a Harvard Law School group that the school would not sign on to litigation challenging the policy, known as the Solomon Amendment. The school released the letter yesterday. The 1996 law allows the Pentagon to pull federal funding from law schools that limit recruiters' access to students. Harvard had forbidden recruiters on campus because of the military's policy forbidding overt gays and lesbians from serving in the armed forces. Faced with the loss of millions in federal aid, Harvard and other schools backed off their bans.
MIT joins budget-trimming trend
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology plans to shutter parts of its campus over the holidays and cut spending and jobs to close a looming $70 million budget shortfall spurred in part by lower-than-expected returns on its endowment. The university also has asked staff and students to save in small ways, such as recycling more and using e-mail instead of regular mail. Departments have been asked to bring brown bag lunches to meetings and to turn down the heat. (AP)

In an effort to save defense dollars, the Department of Defense announced it is looking at ways to transfer schoolchildren attending DoD schools in the United States to local public schools. Some analysts fear the move, if implemented, could result in the closing of schools with a proven track record of academic success and send the students to inferior public schools. Mike Antonucci, director of Education Intelligence Agency, a private research firm, said he supported the effort to cut federal dollars from education. But the Defense Department could look at more appropriate ways to cut costs, including expensive weapons systems, pay raises and bureaucracy, and not its exemplary school system, Antonucci said. "The schools do a good job, and it's clear they do a good job, especially with poor and minority students, so why do you want to close down those schools and send the students to public schools of less quality?" he said.

Fed Considers Raising Interest Rates
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, on Tuesday, said he was prepared to raise interest rates, perhaps aggresively so. Cato Adjunct Scholar Dom Armentano writes that the Fed should increase interest rates now: "Higher rates will serve two purposes. First, they will slow the pace of investment in areas where investment has been too rapid and where inflationary problems are already apparent. Second, they will increase private savings by providing increased incentives to save." This headline was posted: June 9, 2004. U.N. Security Council Unanimously Passes Iraq Resolution

Barney Frank
Scriptwriter: Chris Hellman HELLMAN: Why is (military spending) an important issue to you? REP. FRANK: Because I think we are over-spending internationally, in areas where we don't have a major need, and that comes at the expense of important needs at home. For example, we passed a law a few years ago, providing funds for local communities to hire police officers. Tens of thousands of police officers have been hired, and I think that's been a contribution to one of the great successes we've had recently, which is a reduction in the crime rate. There can't be any higher priority in a government than to protect people. Under our current budgetary plans, under the balanced budget agreement enacted last year, we're gonna stop funding those police officers in a year or two, and the communities that hired them are gonna be faced with the financial need to raise local taxes.

Posted by JasonMA on June 9, 2004 - 08:51 2004 Election Massachusetts Here is a brief update on the National Voter Reg. form saga.
In today's very hot and humid weather, I will head over to the Secretary of State's office to pick up more Massachusetts voter reg. forms.
I have to provide local forms for the shows here because Massachusetts claims that they do not have to accept a "downloadable" national form.
The Federal Election Commission's website claims that they will accept it.
Today the MA Sec. of State's office said the FEC put that information on their site without asking Massachusetts if it was ok first. The FEC made it sound like Massachusetts was told to accept the national form and that Massachusetts has not complied. JasonMA's blog 3 comments read more

Mr. Speaker, I would like to express my appreciation for the bipartisan work of the conferees, and especially for the leadership of Chairman Knollenberg and Ranking Member Edwards, whose long service to meeting the needs of our uniformed men and women is well known to all Members of this House. Mr. Speaker, in June, when the House passed its version of H.R. 2559, it was $41 million less than the president's request and a $1.5 billion cut from Fiscal Year 2003 funding levels.
